During an argument with a Roman Catholic cardinal, Napoleon Bonaparte supposedly burst out: “Your eminence, are you not aware that I have the power to destroy the Catholic Church?” The cardinal said: “Your majesty, we, the Catholic clergy, have done our best to destroy the church for the last 1,800 years. We have not succeeded, and neither will you.”

Maybe. But the Church hasn't faced an internet-connected world which allows victims of abuse by various members of the clergy can share there stories, and call out the Magisterium for inadequate responses to these injustices. I doubt the RCC is going to die as such, but unless the Vatican ups its game, I think it may "survive" as a much smaller institution. Not hatin', just sayin'.
@mikepetitjean4993
@mikepetitjean4993 3 года назад
@@astrinymris9953 Perhaps. However the “Catechism of the Catholic Church” calls Catholics to the way of life Jesus taught while He was here on earth. This is the same way of life that God taught the Hebrews in the Old Testament so God’s meassage is unchanged. I cannot stop someone from spreading hate via the Internet or any other means. I can only pray for them to receive God’s grace, love and guidance to realize that no person has yet obtained the perfection God wants each to have.

@@mikepetitjean4993 It's not just that there are individual bad priests; it's that bishops, archbishops, and cardinals thought it was okay to shuffle these predators to new parishes without warning anyone of their history. It was that the Vatican wouldn't allow these administrators to defrock child molestors without a years-long canonical trial during which the accused was able to use his priestly status to lull victims. To make things worse, they could go through this entire arduous procedure, and the Vatican could still overturn this verdict upon appeal. You can kind of understand why so many bishops felt reluctant to initiate this procedure knowing it might make no difference in the end. TL;DR-- The Church's response to the problem makes it easy to question whether they really are "infallibly guided by the Holy Spirit". That's why the RCC is losing members faster than they gain new ones in the developed world. They're only gaining members in parts of the world which are unfamiliar with the institutional history of the Catholic Church. Pope Francis is trying to turn things around, but he's opposed by a lot of socially conservative Catholics who don't recognize the need to adapt to reality. Maybe he'll manage this, maybe he won't. But either way, the RCC will change in one way or another.
@mikepetitjean4993
@mikepetitjean4993 3 года назад
@@astrinymris9953 You are correct, the bishops handled the problem of predator priest abominably. Added to that, they tried to cover up the problem rather than correcting it. However there is now a zero tolerance policy in place, at least here in the United States. Once an accusation of sexual misconduct is made ,the priest or bishop is removed from ministry until it is resolved. I've seen this happen twice: once to our parish priest and once to the bishop of our diocese. The Diocese notifies local authorities of the accusation and they cooperate with the investigation. If the man is cleared of the charges then he is returned to ministry. Otherwise he is defrocked and leaves ministry permanently. Unfortunately the "Church" is not infallible, it is human. The Church doctrine of infallibility applies only to the Pope and then only if he says that what he is preaching has been directly revealed to him by God. Otherwise even the Pope can make a mistake or hold a false belief, which has happened in the life of the Church. The Catholic Church has definitely changed for the better as a result of the new rules laid down by the United Conference of Catholic Bishops concerning sexual malfeasance by clergy. It's a shame we had to suffer through atrocious, bad management to get to this point. I agree, our love for our fellow man should have lead us here much sooner!

"Do I truly believe that God is in control or not?" I know you meant it a bit rhetorically but for many people who have suffered injustice, the answer is no. Until a few months ago, after being mistreated by an Anglican priest and then hitting delay tactics in legal proceedings and the entire diocese's failed safeguarding mechanisms for an entire year, my answer was no. I was angry, full or hurt and frustration that if God was just, then he was dead. Then another Catholic priest, frustrated with my constant frustration and anger, sat me down over a phone-call and told me, 'Part of our call to justice is to do everything we can. But also recognising that, when we have done that, we have to leave things in God's hands. This isn't defeatism; this is Christian realism. This is the hope that Mary had at the foot of the cross, when all human justice had failed, when - she must've felt - there was nothing anyone could humanly do anymore. And yet she kept her faith. You're angry because you want to see things now. You get happy when things start to look good then immediately sad and angry when they take a turn for the worse. You'll never get peace that way. Because God doesn't work by the deadlines you give him. You want to see what he can see - or think you can - but he doesn't let you; we'll only know at the End of Time. So you'll always be frustrated if you try.' I said, 'What's giving up then?' He said, 'Giving up is saying this is the end. Saying that there will never be justice. Do you know why the feast of Christ the King is on the last Sunday? It's the feast of Christ the just judge. That justice may not come on the first, not the second, not even the 10th but it will come by the last Sunday. I don't make false promises; I can't even promise you'll be in a better place. But I can promise you this: God is just. He can and will bring justice. Maybe not even in your lifetime but it will come. God is more powerful than the Church. He is more powerful than everything. Many saints have been in your place. It's time to leave this work you've tried your best to do on God's desk. He will finish it. Not in your time but he will. It's not the end. It's never the end until judgement day.' I cried... at how quickly his words turned my year-long despair and anger into hope. I still haven't found justice. But I've found that peace - the peace that Mary had at the foot of the cross. The peace unique to Catholicism. Please pray for my confirmation, happening some time in the undefined future due to the pandemic. But it will happen, in God's time. Recently I've lost this peace due to my anxiety and general spiritual restlessness that tends to befall me. So thank you Fr Casey for repeating it all to me again. I truly believe God sent you to speak to me on this occasion, as he has in some of your other videos and homilies as well over the past year.

I look them straight in the eye and tell them that after much reading, research and prayer, I am absolutely sure that each morning we get up we are one day closer to the end. Of course, I have no idea when that will be, and Jesus assures us NO ONE does. The point is, to live today as if tomorrow is the end and tomorrow you will be face to face with Jesus and your final judgment. @@thomashess6211 Jesus appointed Peter to be the head of His (Jesus') Church here on earth. Peter did not create the Church, Jesus did. However, the Church is made up of people so it is not God. As much as the Church intends to fulfill God’s will, sometime human sinfullness gets in the way. This is evident in the child abuse scandal the Church has faced. As Bishop Barron pointed out the Church has a zero tolerance policy now. If a priest or bishop is accused he is immediately taken out of ministry until and investigation either clears or condemns hm. All information is passed to civic authorities as well. As a Catholic I am not worshipping the Church, I love and worship God. The Church provides me with support and teaching to draw ever closer to God and away from my sin. The Church also provides, much more importantly, the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ to me in the Eucharist (communion). Jesus said, in John 6:53-58: "Jesus said to them, “I am telling you the truth: if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you will not have life in yourselves. Those who eat My flesh and drink My blood have eternal life, and I will raise them to life on the last day. For My flesh is the real food; and My blood is the real drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink My blood live in M, and I live in them. The living Father sent me, and because of Him I live also. In the same way whoever eats Me will live because of Me. This, then, is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the bread that your ancestors ate, but then later died. Those who eat this bread will live forever.” I agree with you, the Lord is my rock. He leads me in life and teaches me to do what he created me to do (not that I’m always a good and faithful servant). As far as I know the Catholic Church is the only Christian church which believes that bread and wine actually become the body and blood of Jesus, through the intercession of the Holy Spirit. Once changed they remain the body and blood of Jesus forever, whether consumed or not. This is why we place the consecrated hosts in the tabernacle of the church and save them for distribution at a later Mass. Jesus instituted the Catholic Church and placed Peter in charge of it. And Jesus promised that the gates of hell will never prevail against it. What a wonderful God!

I was raised catholic and the life I have lived has lead me to being agnostic/ conflicted. when you are raised to feel like attending church and praying every night is more like a chore. when going to church ends up being a fashion contest and judging everybody on how they dress. going to mass every sunday to be put to sleep or constantly being asked for more money. that its a competition on who can be the most catholic. when having an abusive father go to church every sunday and then say that atheist are bad people. i was always angry. what good did going to church and acting all religious do for him? he was still an abusive alcoholic father to this day. having atheist people treat me with kindness and respect. growing up with a curious mind, my questions about the faith were always met with hostility. "how dare you question our religion. just shut up and fall in line". when so many of us are raised like this, is it any wonder why so many people like me fall out of the religion. i was baptized and received first communion but it always felt like checking it off a list. i haven't done my confirmation. i am 31. when learning about the child abuse scandal and not being able to discuss it, it feels like the catholic church can never be criticized. if i was brought up to see the church as imperfect and human. that it can make mistakes, then i would have a better relationship with the church. again i was not raised that way. but since accidentally discovering your videos, you are a breath of fresh air. your humility and open mindedness. you've made me have some serious self reflection. i think the parts that you mention about faith and god make me feel so emotional. you don't come off as this judgmental holier than thou person. you have this warmth about you. you seem so caring and understanding. i don't want to come off as a creep but i couldn't help notice which church is sometimes featured in your videos. and since i live in the city, i will be attending mass this weekend. i haven't been for a really long time. i will be going alone because going with my family always makes me uncomfortable because they stare at me. "oh we haven't seen you here in awhile". now don't get me wrong. i have had issues with this for years and i know one visit won't solve anything but i have found(for me) that when i sit solitary in church, i just feel so much peace. i would welcome any advice or comments

This sounds a lot like me. I'm 51and yet to be confirmed. I'm not sure 8 ever will as I can't swear allegiance to Rome/Vatican. There are many reasons; I have read many encyclicals and other documents and can't reconcile it with Christ. I too feel a sense of peace during mass. Not sure if it's just familiarity or what. If if gives you peace, go. God will find you there as easily as anywhere else. I hope you can find your peace.

Catholicism is actually what drove me to agnosticism for very similar reasons. I straight up left christianity altogether for a time, but I still felt a connection to the Christian God. I feel like it might not necessarily be a problem with the church but the churchgoers becoming less than ideal, and this channel is pulling me back towards christianity (in a spiritual way) so I'm rather conflicted about whether I should reconsider myself a Christian after all those years of not doing so but still feeling a connection to God

I'm not sure how familiar you are with the Catholic practice of visiting the Blessed Sacrament when out on display, and then have a personal conversation with Jesus. You should try it, and try talking to Him and opening your heart as you would only do it with your best friend; or maybe only with God. This only needs to be a spiritual conversation between your heart and Jesus' heart. he loves when we approach Him with our worries, fear, concerns, problems, and many other problems. After doing this, you may want to contact Fr. Casey privately and ask him to suggest other ways to find answers. Never forget what God tells us time and again in the Bible: 'do not be afraid."

Amen. I too am a Catholic and the problems in the Church stem from the humans, and their sinfulness (myself included), who belong to the Church. This includes both the Laity and the Ordained. No person is perfect in comparison to the perfection of God. The abuse of children by priests was reprehensible and the response of Bishops was, too. However, as Bishop Barron said changes in Church policy have been put in place with a zero tolerance policy. The priest in my parish was accused of abusing a child and was immediately removed from ministry (under the new rules). Even the Bishop of our Diocese was immediately removed from ministry when he was accused a abusing a child when he was a parish priest years before. These men removed the moment the accusation was made without waiting for the end result of Church and civil authority investigations. How long do we hold on to the mistakes of the past? The Church changed its procedures and paid billions in reparations. But God is still in control and He will carry us through this storm and bring us out better; just as He promised Peter and the Apostles: the gates of hell will not prevail against it."

It always makes me roll my eyes when I hear an ordained minister (from Modern Conservative Catholics all the way to the doomsday Evangelists) speak like they know the exact date of the return of the Messiah. I could've been certain that Jesus said "stay awake and be ready. For you don't know when the hour of the Lord will come". And for ex-Catholics turned Bible thumpers who attend weekly concerts with Bible readings tell me that I must "leave the catholic church, for it has fallen into apostasy and ruin." And, meanwhile, I've been taught to never leave a project unfinished. The Lord God had told St. Francis of Asissi (Fr. Casey's religious order) to restore the church that has fallen into ruin. Francis took that to heart and rebuilt San Damiano Church. And then it clicked for him that God meant "rebuild the collapsing faith of his brothers and sisters in Christ". And that is what we all are called to do. Rather than demolishing the faith and starting over (which I have seen numerous evangelists do time and time again), reinforce the pillars and foundation of God's holy church. Even a lapsed Roman Catholic like myself can see, hear, and understand the message.

What's more, we have in today's Gospel: "And the gates of the underworld can never hold out against it." It's really hard not to give in despair - seeing the people turning away from the Church more often than other way, seeing the sin in oneself. You can't deny that future sometimes does look grim. And yet, we have to - seemingly irrationally - hope against all odds. That, as God Himself said, the gates of the underworld will never hold. But thank you. And this message really touched me and gave me a new perspective about the Church. I think the best way that we could keep the Church alive and kicking in today's world is not the cynicism, but rather, the openness born out of Christian joy. The Church is not in deep crisis. That's the point of this video.
@powerofk
@powerofk 3 года назад
@@duck-headedllama9991 Honestly, the Church has been in much worse crises than today in the past. Many of the popes during the Early Middle Ages were very evil men who cared more about being an earthly prince than being a servant of God. During the Black Death (the worst pandemic the world has ever known), the Pope fled Rome and hung out in Avignon, France. And his next several successors stayed there - the Papacy hung out in France for 70 years! Then, urged on by St. Catherine of Siena, the Pope returned to Rome, just to have the French Cardinals so angry that they declared him void and elected their own Pope to hang out in Avignon (the Western Schism). And this went on for the duration of the next 5 popes! At one point, a third group of Cardinals decided to elect a THIRD man as Pope and have him stay in Pisa! Eventually, a council had to be called, all three men had to vacate their claims to the Papacy, and Martin V (who was a Cardinal, but only a deacon at the time - after his election, he was promptly ordained as priest and then consecrated as bishop before his crowning as Pope) was elected. So, no... having a Pope who is quite faithful and orthodox yet states the teachings in a way that can easily be twisted by those trying to destroy the faith is not the worst thing that can happen to the Church. St. John Paul II was a teacher and actor before becoming Pope. Pope Emeritus Benidict XVI, before becoming Pope, was probably the greatest theologian since St. Thomas Aquinas. Pope Francis's charism? Being a pastor - and meeting people where they are. I have no doubt that our Pope is a holy and devout man who loves God and His Church. And we have to pray for him.

Well said as always Father Casey. Thank you for always preaching the Good News. You, Pope Francis, Bishop Dolan of the Diocese of Phoenix, and my pastor Father Larry Merta of Holy Cross Church in Mesa, AZ all make me so proud to be Catholic.

I love this! I am often times worried about the Anti-Pope Fransis people in the church. They allso seem to allways be the Anti-Vatican II people. Which is silly.
