Cutting some 2x4 strapping out of Soft Maple on our Mahoe Minimax. This Machine is awesome. Also, for everyone subscribed, I have some house updates coming soon, this summer has been very busy so I haven't been working on it much. But we will be working on it full time soon! Thanks for watching.

I had a 127 Mobile years ago that had 10' end stands was used to cut old growth doug fir logs.I could cut 3 2x4's at once with extra edger saw blade attachment.I kind of partial to the circle mill but there is a place for the bandsaw.

It is certainly hard to beat a sawmill that produces edged dimensional lumber right off the log and have the boards brought back to you. Another perk is that you can also produce quarter and rift sawn lumber with no extra effort compared to bandsaw mills.

@@enchantedmountain5354 Quarter sawn lumber is lumber in which the growth rings of the tree are perpendicular to the wide face of the board. In wood such as oak it produces a ray fleck pattern on the face of the board.

Impressive mill. Most of what I mill on my bandsaw are between 12" and 20" dia. Thin kerf was what attracted me to the bandsaw route but they are not without problems ( no mill is!) What kerf width is on the mahoe blades? Cheers John
@SharpeTimber
@SharpeTimber Год назад
hey John, thanks! Yes the size of kerf is definitely an advantage on a bandsaw, I think the kerf on my saw is .325? I tried to put narrower teeth on once but it needs the wider ones to work without pinching and warping the blade.
@robmack151
@robmack151 8 месяцев назад
Honestly... I really like having the wood chips of the wider circular blade, rather than the dust produced by the narrow kerf of a bandsaw.... like you said though, they both have their uses 😉

If the logs are nice and big sawdust is no big issue, but with smaller logs that .325 kerf eats some lumber. And then there is more sawdyst to manage around. Not saying that it is a problem for everyone, but fir some... Like the easyness of cutting two sides at once, knowing what I want and just looking how much I get...
@SharpeTimber
@SharpeTimber Год назад
Yes that would be something for one to consider when looking for a mill. Really depends on what you will use it for and what your space is like. I don't find the kerf or sawdust to be a problem for me but it does take a bit of work to keep it cleaned up. Thanks for watching!

@mandmmilling3716 Год назад
You should look at a mobile dimensions sawmill if you want to see fast. It runs 2 horizontal 8-inch blades instead of one like yours. You can use the 2 blades to edge each board or cut 2 boards per pass. Lone valley adventures youtube channel uses one.
@SharpeTimber
@SharpeTimber Год назад
Hey thanks for watching! I checked it out, I have seen those mills before. I like the mill but it seems pretty simple. Looks like I could cut 2 or 3 boards per 1 on the MD. You can't really control the speed, looks like you just let it go. I make up for some speed and power not having a second blade.

Each mill has benefits and drawbacks. It depends on what you plan to saw. I have a Mobile Dimension Mill but recently borrowed a Wood Mizer for a job sawing timbers. The thin kerf bandmills are great for high value hardwoods but I mainly saw pine that has very little value at the big mills so it doesn't matter that I make more sawdust the speed is much more important to me.

But a house or garage isn't built with only 2x4s, I have 2x4, 2x6, 2x8, 2x12, 8x12, show me one of these that can saw that.... And I never seen one of these mills saw 6 in logs, on band mill I can saw 3 at once, and I never seen one of these mills under 20k, all in all band mill is best.......
@SharpeTimber
@SharpeTimber Год назад
That is true house doesn't only need 2x4s, but it cuts any dimension of lumber up to 8x12 without any issue, in my other video about how much can you make saw milling I cut 5000 board ft of white oak into 1x4s, 2x8s,2x10s,2x12s in 2 days. A bandsaw definitely has its place, I have a woodmizer myself. I use it to cut beams bigger than my mahoe, and longer as well because you can put on as many extensions as you want.

My D And L swing blade will do 8x16. Although the kerf is wider, recovery is better than a band mill. It didn't make sense to me, but several universities did this exact study showing better recovery with a swing blade or circular mill. I love that I can get 1x2 or 1x3 trim boards, or get some 1x1 sticker stock out of the corners. There is very little waste. The biggest factor in our decision for a circular saw, was blade and maintenance cost. In 190 hours on the new mill, we have $27 in replacing carbide tips. I about throw up when friends tell me how much they've spent on their band mills in that amount of hours!
