Just on the first bit re technical ability - if you add in vocals the Beatles would have to come out on top - they are basically a great vocal group who were also musicians - unbeatable background vocals, harmony, lead vocals. Most bands are composed of musicians who sing - the Beatles are the inverse (and I suspect that is a key element in their legacy).

I agree, technical ability is about more than just playing long solos. All 4 members of that group were multi-instrumentalists of varying degrees, had an uncannily strong grasp of melody and harmony. I see a lot made on various forums about how the beatles didn't know music theory, which is kinda crap when you dissect many of their songs. knowing how to name an E7b9 is not nearly as important of a skill as knowing where it will fit in a song or arrangement, and if you dig through their outtakes and see how they played with drastically different arrangements of certain songs, that's gotta count for some sort of technical ability, probably more important than a big long exposition solo. Not to mention that imo harrison's guitar work on Abbey Road rivals the likes of Beck, Clapton and Page in many places.

McCartney is a genius melodist, the GOAT, but consider this : which version of With a Little Help From My Friends is better, and by what amount ? - Beatles' version ? - Joe Cocker's one, arranged/re-written by Jimmy Page ? The Beatles wrote songs, Led Zeppelin wrote songs and pieces ; today most people would hear with pleasure Beatles' songs but very few, if any, will listen to them. On the other hand LOTS of people are still listening to Led Zeppelin's music on a regular basis (and the same for Pink Floyd, BTW...) In pop music history the Beatles are an essential milestone, just like Elvis but their music will fade away. Led Zeppelin is re-discovered by loads of young people who listen to their music, not so much for the Beatles...

@hervemurgale8098 I don't know which world you live in, but millions of people still listen to the Beatles and learn their songs. I watched A Hard Day's Night on Amazon Prime recently, and it was great. It's still popular after sixty years. There are people making a living on RU-vid analysing Beatles songs. There is a channel called Virgin Rock where a classical musician is working her way through every song the Beatles recorded. There are many thousands, probably millions, of reaction videos featuring Beatles songs. There are lots of musicians, especially guitarists, giving lessons on how to play Beatles songs. not taking away from their talent at all, but the beatles were greatly aided by their place in the rock and roll timeline. Not a lot had been explored in a serious artistic way yet, and new technology was coming out on a near weekly basis it seemed in the mid 60s, so they had the opportunity to be the 'first' in a lot of things, if not the first to actually do it, the first to be seen/heard utilizing many of these new techniques and technologies really aided their legacy. Of course, that is notwithstanding the great creative spirit and songwriting ability they had as well, but there was a serious jolt in the arm to said creativity with all the opportunities to pioneer the new toys available at the time.

The true measure lies in whether the artist advanced the art form and resonated with a broader audience. This perspective emphasizes the importance of innovation and impact in art, an artist's contribution should be assessed by their ability to push boundaries and influence a wide audience. Art is often seen as a dynamic field where innovation and breaking new ground are highly valued. When an artist introduces new techniques, ideas, or forms that significantly influence the art world, they contribute to the evolution of the art form. This can be seen in the work of pioneers like Pablo Picasso with Cubism or Jackson Pollock with Abstract Expressionism. Not all groundbreaking art is immediately appreciated by the majority. Some art forms may initially challenge viewers, but over time, they can gain broader acceptance as society's tastes and perspectives evolve. Thus, the relationship between innovation and audience reception can be complex and sometimes takes years to fully appreciate. The value of an artist's work can also depend on how it fits within the historical and cultural context of its time. Artists who capture the spirit of their era or challenge prevailing norms can have a lasting impact, even if their work wasn't fully appreciated during their lifetime. While personal taste is subjective, art that resonates with a large audience often reflects shared cultural values, emotions, or experiences, making it more universally impactful. Other than sales and your ‘personal taste’ - The Pistols should be in the top 3.

For rock guitar itself it's Hendrix hands down. Like him or hate him he is what kicked off the evolution of modern rock guitar. Also what most people overlook is that he is way more important for rhythm guitar than he is for lead. His double stops and chord inversions were one of a kind. Whenever you have someone you can name as reference point like the Beatles and say that music wasn't the same afterwards you know they are objectively good.

You are a bit hamstrung by your lack of knowledge of The Rolling Stones. Your indifference to them has kept you from acquiring the level of knowledge you have for so many other bands and artists. Keith Richards has recorded some of the most incredible guitar tones and songs of any guitarist ever, they are probably 2nd only to the Beatles in great popular songs. The low score on album consistency isn’t fair because with the Beatles they were literally inventing the idea of the rock album, when singles were the order of the day. Those are just a few points.
