Is this the last Samurai? She's rare and she might be one of a handful of 120 Samurai sloops left in existence. Built in 1959 in Japan and shipped to Cape Cod, USA, to be fitted out, these diminutive boats have big hearts and can go just about anywhere. All wood with fiberglass over plywood decks, a new one could be purchased, complete with sails, for less than $10,000 back in the day. Wabi Sabi, this Samurai 28, is mostly original with only slight modifications - and while she's not for sale, I thought it would be worth showing you all this beautiful boat. The owner, Gordon, bought her in 2004 and has been sailing along the Maine coast ever since. He did not spend a lot of money on her, as you'll learn, and it just goes to show you that there are so many different ways to get out on the water - even on 64 year old wooden sloop - and you do not have to spend a fortune to do so.
This Samurai is a very unique sailboat and I hope you enjoyed learning about her as much as I did!
Thanks for watching.

The "feeling", to me about wood boats is the solid feeling and the feeling of the wood being Alive!

Double diagonal planking was used to construct early lifeboats .

The funny thing about old interesting boats is the owners often have as much character as the boat, good stuff, thanks for sharing

So true and so many great stories . Unfortunately I had to trim a number of them to keep the video a reasonable length! Thanks for watching!

Another great episode ... beautiful boat ... it had a really roomy feel for at 28 foot boat. I've got to admit though, I'd really have to fall head over heals before i could convince myself to take a chance on a 1950's wooden boat. I think it's the "drying out and swelling back up" seasonal cycle that would unnerve me a bit too much!!! I know that it's all in my head, but I know that I would worry every time i dropped her back in the water -- I wouldn't be able to sleep for that whole week!!!

I know it! Definitely demands a certain type of fortitude. Gordon’s done it now for 19 years and I think he still worries!

Having owned a Samurai for 12 years I had one problem the ice box was insulated with saw dust and was continuously damp causing the planking to rot under the ice box and this was a very difficult repair.

Nice boat 🙂 after spending a good part of my early life replanking and caulking wooden sailboats an doing some old strip planked ones , if that one rots replacing the diagonal planking is going to be tedious , strip is easy diagonal not so much , the old Chris Crafts were built like that and many a boatyard had one in it with the paint stripped off the planking where it had rotted and time was measured by how long it took for the owner to run out of money and give up sad to say .

Let's hope that doesn't happen on this one! Yikes...

Who is singing that song the show opens with and where can I get a copy of it?

That’s actually my sister-in-law and her band, Rose Ganache, who made this parody specifically for BoatFools - it’s not a completed song, just the first minute. She’s got an amazing voice! Check them out at www.roseganache.com. Thanks for watching!

I love her voice, her sound and vibe to that song! Tell her she really should add a couple of more verses and she’ll have a hit. I like your channel too, they’re my kind of boats! I’m going to retire the end of next year and buy myself a special like you show on your channel! Thanks for going thru the trouble!

I’ll pass that along! I’m psyched for you - and certainly reach out if you have any questions about any boats you’re thinking about!

The fact of the matter is and I have a hunch that its cast in cement you've been showing your personal wish list of eye candy for future ( gotta have em all). Correct me if I off base . Just saying Angus.
