What I consider "edge of breakup" is the point at which if I dig in on my strings relatively hard, there will be a distorted transient attack, but the sound will immediately clean up for the rest of it's sustain. If I play lightly, there should be no discernible breakup in the tone at all. But everyone seems to have their own definitions of all these tone terms. At 7:42, what you call your edge of breakup tone is what I consider to be considerably overdriven. Like, AC/DC--crunch level of driven.

Thanks so much Rhett for posting a video on this subject. Often times we do use these terms but maybe not have the clearest idea of what they mean. I’ve been trying to get that beautiful point of break up on my older modeling amp for some time and this really helped out a lot. you gave us a deeper understanding of how all all that works in the context in which you can use it in. Once again another well organized and informative video thanks so much. I would definitely dig more of this subject 🙏🏽🎯🎸🎼

I would be interested as well. I used let hands practice in a space in my house to observe their methods. I never did get it. They mostly made a list, and each member would learn learn songs at home individually for cover tunes. Rehearsals were mostly dedicated to originals. Every band seemed to have their own dynamic. One had two brothers who liked to argue everything.

The tone itself works very well for specific genres for sure. For what you do Rhett, it sounds so musical and amazing. For most Pop/Rock session styles (especially from the 50s-70s) it's incredible. It doesn't quite work for the cover band stuff I do, however I DO take away the dynamics part of it live. Having more gain than you need then utilizing the Tim Pierce picking dynamics approach to dig in for choruses, then backing off for verses. Just a little more gain for fuller saturation :D

Great stuff. If you’re able, Rhett, it would be cool to have you dial in a particular amp for your perfect tone. Understanding it’s subjective, but it would be cool to see you dial in a Marshall SV, and the an AC30 and then a blues Jr and specify where each dial is so a player can get your tone settings as a starting point. Just a thought, but I’d watch more of that content and find it helpful. 👍

I mean at this point is “edge of breakup” really a meaningful term? Or is it merely just a subjective “I like this”. As in, if edge of breakup moves for everyone, what’s the point of specifying it as a term? I guess it’s useful, but it’s not very specific.
@mechmat12345
@mechmat12345 2 года назад
@@seanbeadles7421 I think some people want it to be defined more narrowly than others, and they claim anyone who doesn't agree to that narrow definition is wrong. The desirable characteristic you're looking for is a noticeable change in gain in relation to picking dynamics, which doesn't necessarily mean the amp is dead clean with light picking.

I always thought edge of breakup meant that the guitar was on the edge of breaking up, i.e. starting to distort from an otherwise clean signal when you "dig" into "it." Do the words "edge" and "breakup" have alternate meanings?

I get the whole edge of breakup thing and it does sound really good. However, I think it should be thought as another great tool to have available to you and not something you should necessarily just use all the time (like you said about compression). Having played in cover bands for many years I feel like there are many songs where I need a clean tone that is totally clean with no breakup at all (like a lot of old motown, funk and disco music). And I feel like edge of breakup kind of works against getting that totally clean tone with no breakup when I need it. But some other songs (like blues or rock music) edge of breakup can be great. So I think when you should use it depends on the situation. Also there is the practical issue of, unless you're using a head and a cab with an attenuator in between, there WILL be situations where you're playing at a small venue and just CANNOT get your volume up to the edge of breakup without being WAY too loud and everyone screaming at you to turn down. So there's that...
@RobertSaxy

I learned how to set up my amp from one of your other videos so thank you for that and these kind of videos explaining this stuff. I think the reason I like edge off break up tone is because I’m a brass player (trombone) and the amp reacts tonally just like a brass instrument does with dynamics. About compression I recently tried plugging the headphone out of my amp, it had a cab sim, straight into a mixer with a single knob compressor and I still get all the tonal variation with a more balanced over all out put plus them I have the reverb and delay effects that I can use in the mixer with it too.

Thanks so much for that wonderful summary of amp tone, and of course, thanks so much for that free preset. Just a couple of points, which may or may not resonate with anybody else. First, I find that even mod effects sound better after the amp (or in an FX loop in a real amp), so I'll have to play with your preset a bit to see if that translates into the digital world. Secondly - and this is just something I prefer - I like to split the signal after the amp, and keep one path dry. Then I send the other path through whatever fx I'm looking for (almost all the time, just reverb and delay), then merge the two paths together, with a very mild noise reduction block at the very end (if necessary). I find that simply adjusting the wet/dry mix in the fx blocks doesn't sound the same as emulating a parallel fx loop. Again, it's all preference. Thirdly, if anybody is interested in how well 4CM (or rather, my version, which is more or less 3CM) works with the HX Stomp, it works extremely well! One of my presets enables my Fuchs BJ21 to become part of the signal chain very transparently. Finally, and I realize this is all opinion and could offend some people, I always cringe when people play distorted first position chords (E, Em, D....) and let them ring. A more unpleasant sound is hard to imagine, but hey, different strokes!

If you set your Guitar's volume at about 7-8 when you dial in that 'Edge of Break-up' sound on your Amp, you have a 'boost' option without needing a pedal. Turn up the Volume to 'boost' or roll it back a bit to go very 'clean'. You can also set the guitars tone to about 7-8 too when you dial in the amps EQ and use that as a Treble Boost to cut through on a Solo...

very well explained . I would define the Sweet spot as , increasing the amp volume You ll reach to the point where you get all the dynamics and the harmonics of sound frequencies at max level to our ears. Beyond this point you will begin to loose those dynamics ,harmonics and get more saturation . Say you will begin to loose those pikes of the edge of the frequencies and get more distortion or say saturation .and it applies to every electronic musical gear.

That's some sweet Mary Jane there! Not to nerd out to hard, but preamp tubes actually "amplify" more than power tubes, a typical 12ax7 has an amplification factor (mU) of 100, whereas a 6L6GT only has an amplification factor of 8. Power tubes have greater plate current dissipation to create more "power" (watts=VA), but amplification is an increase of voltage. Basically the preamp tubes "amplify" the signal voltage from the guitar, make up for signal loss from the tone controls, etc., and the phase inverter splits the waveform allowing the power tubes to work in push-pull mode (along with some degree of amplification as well), and then the power tubes, while they do add a relatively small increase in voltage, more importantly bring current (amps) to the table to create the power needed to move the speaker voice coil. Here is a top secret tone nerd tip for the people that kept reading; turn on the amp with nothing plugged into it and slowly turn up each knob till you hear the noise floor increase in the speaker (you will hear things "open up") find the sweet spot on each knob right at the cusp of where this happens. This is basically one stage opening up into the next, this will dial in the amp right in the "edge of breakup" because when you introduce signal each stage will push the next all the way down the line. Also a quick and dirty way to hone in on the sweet spot on an unfamiliar amp (backline etc.) Give it a try!

"slowly turn up each knob till you hear the noise floor increase in the speaker (you will hear things "open up") find the sweet spot on each knob right at the cusp of where this happens." Do you have to start at a specific knob and work your way across?
@ER-yq1lc
@ER-yq1lc 2 года назад
@@bobisadrummer Since each tubes grid acts as a "valve" in theory you want to move output to input to ensure that you're passing the upstream signal, but it's only really critical on amps with a master volume or amps where the passive tone controls will kill the entire signal at zero. Start around 9 o''clock on all the dials and go from there. You want to go to where you hear it "open up" and then turn it back down to the point where that just starts to happen, think of it like the "knee" point of a compressor. Once you do it a few times you'll get a feel for it. Make sure nothing is plugged into the amp when you do it, you just want to hear what's happening in the amp itself.

What an awesome information! I’m going to try these steps with my amps! Thank you so much, Erick!

I think what it really comes down to is that the artistic side of us is extremely intuitive, and some of the technical design "flaws" can be used as extra layers (or even tools perhaps?) of artistic expression. Digital stuff has gotten pretty good but to my ear nothing touches an es-339 with p-90's through a 12 inch speaker driven by EL84's.

I guess the key is to ideally set it so that you can still just about get the cleanest tone you need, whilst also being able to get a little bit more "drive" when you dig in. How clean that cleanest tone is, will be different for everyone. Which, is probably why there is such a large range of opinions of where the "edge of breakup" is.

Good stuff Rhett! Being a huge fan of Keith's 5 Watt World channel advocating more music with less gear, I've discovered that I can get all the "tones" I could ever need using an ABY switch to run my 15 Watt tube amp WITH my Katana MKII Artist. Programming the desired effects in the Boss Tone Studio for the Katana and setting the volumes just right on the two amps together produces some amazing tones. The Boss GA/FC foot switch allows full control of all the "channels" on the Katana having 8 switchable presets for on the fly switching of the Tone Studio preset patches plus switchable on/off circuits for the effects plus a direct out and an effects loop. Total price brand new: Katana Artist MK-II - $599.00 / GA/FC Foot switch - $99.00 / Monoprice Stage Right 15 Watt Tube amp w/JnJ tubes - $249.00 for a grand total of $948.00 - No pedals needed! Great set-up for less that a grand ~

Standing in front of that wall of divided by13’s (super jealous btw) I can’t tell if your guitar has strap locks and those hands free moments gave me some serious heeby-jeeby’s. Awesome video man👍

I agree on the use of compression. Works best in the studio!

I learned a lot. You explain it well. I’ve tried to really grasp this stuff for a while. Physics of electronics is like magic to me.
