I owned it in the film days, loved its rendition (you express very clearly what makes it so lovely) but had a hard time focusing it wide open at portrait distance. It really challenges the limits of rangefinder focusing. It is also large and heavy for a M lens, and I traded it in for a 75mm summicron, which is much more practical but less magical. Anyway, that 75 'lux will be fantastic on any of the current generation of mirrorless bodies, and I deeply regret not owning it anymore. Unaffordable for me at current prices with my current revenues. I have been told that the latest Voigtlander 75mm f/1.5 behaves very similarly. Have not seen any serious comparisons though. Thanks for the video.

The reason I bought a v3 of the 75mm Summilux is that it came factory 6-bit coded and apparently was tuned for digital vs film. The focus of my copy has always been spot on for portraits closer to minimum focus distance. Like you, this is also my favorite lens.

In preparation for shooting this video I took a few shots and shot a few clips with the 85 mm I have and I was totally sincere about missing those extra 10 mm. 75 mm is a very cool focal length. What do you enjoy about the 100 so much?
@bryanlovephotography
@bryanlovephotography 2 месяца назад
It's the compression you can get since it can natively get down to a 1:2 macro ratio. You end up getting compression that makes it look like a noctilux, but it's still a 2.8 lens. It's also incredibly sharp in the center but the fall-off is similar to the noctilux. It pairs quite nicely on the SL system as well with the adapter and if you can find one of the el-pros for it, you can get true 1:1 for those rare moments you want true macro. I love it for portrait and landscape. It's even replaced my tried-and-true 135, which I thought would never happen.

I mean I agree that companies' lenses were designed with some level of consistency in mind. And those often differed between companies, especially before the current generation where makers are racing to make sensors and lenses that look same-y. I think some maker's lenses get too much benefit of the doubt though, Leica and Zeiss coming to mind where it's true they hit a lot of home runs but even Walter Mander struck out sometimes. This lens seems super cool, never seen one in person myself. Personally if I were buying a short M tele, I would save some money and get a 90AA, and take a step back (and turn the clarity slider down lol). But I totally get why someone would go for the 75 instead.
@oliscurra
@oliscurra 2 месяца назад
The thing about manufacturer's making lenses that look same-y (nice one 🙂) is that in most cases lenses are designed by people who are engineers first & possibly photographic artists second. (No facts are used here - so salt and a few grains to be taken). Still, I can imagine that the goal is to first make a realistic image & second make it interesting. With the way technology has evolved since over 40 - 80 years ago, this probably results in a lot of same-y looks. A designer would've to specifically adjust the balance of priorities between clinical perfection & artistic image today. Never shot the 90. I've heard a lot of good things, but especially since shooting 75 for that "near shot", 90 seems almost "macro-esque". Thanks for watching & leaving your thoughts by the way. 👍🏽 What's your cam setup?

Agreed, beautiful lens. I was curious to see if this lens is available anywhere now and if it is what might it cost. On E Bay I found this lens ranging in price from $4,789.74 to 9,600 CA. My fav lens. for portrait thus far is my Sony 135mm f/1.8 GM. A drawback, you need lots of space for that. I have tried the Sony 50mm f/1.2 GM, that lens is beast of lens. Would it be worth it to acquire that Leica lens? I suppose if I acquire a Leica body, then the lens & I was professional. ...I am not professional, probably never will be. I think from your video however if you wanted an extra special lens for portrait yes of course that Leica lens is beautiful for various reasons. Quality review!!!
@oliscurra
@oliscurra 2 месяца назад
Like I said in the video, I'm always very hesitant about recommending anyone to spend such a large sum of money. Especially although all three are bokeh monsters... they all produce a slightly different image aesthetic. In a nutshell I would say the roll off from focus to out of focus in more differentiated with the Sony's than the 75mm. The 75mm is more gradual. Another option is the leica 80mm summilux-r f/1.4. It's a r lens... same aesthetic as it's 75mm m lens counterpart, same optical design... but of course you'd need the r to e mount. ALso I am not sure how heavy or "beast of lens" it is in comparison to the 50 you mentioned. PS I saw your fitness content online. Have you got your photography online as well? I'd love to see it. 🙂
