Another great video Noel. It is great to see my home town in all its glory (Pompey). The Solent forts were actually built to protect Portsmouth (navel base) from the perceived threat of a French invasion in the 19th century and although armed no invasion occurred and the forts never fired at an enemy ship, one of them is now a hotel and is well worth checking out!
I've a feeling they were nicknamed Palmerston's follies, in tribute to the man who had them built. Noel probably didn't see them, unless it was low tide, but there are underwater submarine barriers outside Pompey, which were built in WW2, to keep enemy submarines from entering the harbour. Nowadays they serve to catch out the occasional amateur yachtsman or woman who haven't done any preparatory work and/or are unaware of their presence 🙂.
Downtown Portsmouth looks fantastic, Sandown does look like great. This was a nice trip home. "RAF like local council"...funny! Good sightings Rach!! Gliders out like crazy this flight! Your route went further East today going home, before you went direct Gamston. I do like when you pan down to your iPad live traffic and position. Nice flight and landing...CHEERS!!!
The forts were not built for WWII but were dreamed up as part of the 1859 Royal Commission, when fears of invasion by Napoleon III led British Prime Minister Lord Henry Palmerston having them built, there were 5 in total. Sandown Airport is like Oshkosh and Ibiza interesting way to look at Sandown but nothing like them. Great avlog. 👍😊
@@christopherhankin6158 I've heard the ones on Portsdown Hill being named as such but not the sea forts. Perhaps they're all tarred under the same brush.
@@FlyWithNoelPhilips to answer the question. Is this Britain's best airfield. No. Biggin Hill is the best airfield. Just my opinion though. Love the channel Noel. Keep up the good work.....
Sandown was my local airport as a child. Every Saturday I’d cycle over to watch British Midland’s DC3 arriving from Castle Donnington (East Midlands now)
@@FlyWithNoelPhilips the terminal used to be diagonally opposite where it is now and there was a road that crossed the threshold of 05 to get there. The road was closed for the arrival and departure of the DC3. After Midland stopped the route, it was briefly operated by British Westpoint also with DC3s.
Great video again Noel. I live in Norfolk and was travelling to the Lakes up the A1M two Fridays ago and saw the sign for Gamston airport and I yelled, that's Noels airport then just like that, Victor Yankee Tango flew over our car, made me chuckle
Loved this vid Noel, especially with you flying out of Sandown iow! If you’re ever back on the iow, check out the west side (brighstone, Chale, Yarmouth etc) it’s beautiful and you won’t be stuck for a nice pub :)
Great video, Neol, subscribed. I once drove trucks from next to Gamston Airport to South Wales and back. I left the UK to explore Asia, including living in: Kazahkstan, China and now Thailand. Better skies here!
Down to Lydd could be a nice one! - Has a lovely approach over the sea for Runway 21/03, dungeness power station nearby as well as a nice pub/restaurant only a small walk from the airfield.
Great video Noel. I’ve flown down to EGHN 3 times in the last 2 weeks, it’s a great place to visit. You should’ve done the lap round the needles though. Busting around there at 600ft is immense fun!
We’d planned to, but those clouds looked a lot nastier than they ended up being so we wanted to get out before it got worse. Next time for sure though!
Noel, you are now leaving my place of birth the Isle of Wight. Would have been back there by about now , but thanks to the dreaded covid still here in New Zealand. Still one way of seeing the Island , so thank you.
There’s South Shields and Amble on the north east coast which are fantastic in the summer. Great fish and chips and lovely beaches, especially South Shields. There’s also a small theme park on the beach as well.
Brilliant video Noel 👍ever considered becoming a commercial pilot ? As a nervous flyer you would put me at ease listening to you from the flightdeck 😀😀
If you fancy a quick trip Skegness airfield is open (EGNI) seem to remember it’s located between Skegness and Ingolmells near to Butlins, 800m on RW03/21.
@@FlyWithNoelPhilips You are welcome, my local seaside town in Bognor Regis has a small airfield, look up Bognor Gliding club, it gets PA28s there, its by the sea!
Don’t knock gliding competitions. So called chess in the air. A game of strategy and a lot of luck. Do you stick with the thermal you’re in keep moving on task. Do you trade height for speed or fly slower due the lack of lift. Learn more it’ll blow your mind. As for altitude we will fly wave up to 18k here in the US and some days we will get a wave window and venture into class A and keeep going up as much as the wave willl take us. Love the videos Noel.
Nicely done Noel & two good vlogs. Dan Subhani has done an excelkent job & wish there were more places like it in the UK. Rachel is steely eyed with the lookout.good on her. Quick Q, why the large displaced threshold for 03, seems strange given the distanve from the motorway?
Thank you! Yes Dan has done a great job down there, such a refreshing airfield to visit. I'm not entirely sure the reason for the displaced threshold at Gamston. I've only ever used it twice to take off, I will try and find out and put it in a future video!
I had flying lessons over Northumberland North East coast..flying over various castle's including Alnwick Castle where Harry Potter movie was filmed. Its well worth the trip if you can make it.
When did you take your PPL, I was flying from Gamston in a Cessna 152, my instructor was Dave Kennedy. I think Retford Flying School has ended business now.
If that was singing - don't give up the day job! :-) - - It's a well-known fact that if you are going to invade the UK, do it on Saturday afternoon, because all the Mil boys will have gone home for the weekend! - - Those forts pre-date WW2, (and 1), they were built to keep the Spaniards out!
An interesting time to observe Silverstone circuit - I've gone through a playback on ADS-B Exchange and can confirm this flight happened on 21st July, just 3 days earlier Silverstone had hosted Formula 1's 2021 British Grand Prix. It was notable for a big 51g crash on the first lap involving Max Verstappen following a collision with title contender Lewis Hamilton who went on to win the race albeit with a 10 second penalty. Max was taken to hospital for precautionary check-ups, luckily he was ok.
