I graduated high school in 1977. A classmate of mine took a non-Boss 429 69 Fastback and modified the engine bay to fit a Boss 429 engine in it. He got the drive train out of a wrecked original. The engine was rebuilt/built with 12.5:1 compression, tunnel ram and 2-4's (Dominators). The night I saw the car he had wrinkle wall slicks and wheelie bars on the car. It was parked in a gas station where he was parked with it. I pulled in to talk, about 3am. He said he was waiting for the local cruise traffic to die off and was ready to take the car out for a one-way pass. When he started up the car it shook. As he let off on the clutch he chirped the rear tires. I followed out and then the lane next to him. We slowed down for a red light. He then told me not to go when the green light came. Once he got a green, he nailed it and dumped the clutch. The front end came way off the ground, and the wheelie bars kept the car at about 45 degrees up. Both rear tires were smoking. As the front end was starting to come down, he hit second and the front car back up, same thing for 3rd and 4th. All the way from 1-4th gear on the rear wheels. The car drifted a half lane over to my lane, I was still sitting at the green light watching. He set the front end down and it bounced a little side to side but no issues. The next night he did the same, but a cop saw him, he got a few tickets, and lost his license for 30 days. Some of the tickets were equipment violations others weren't. He never drove it on the road after that. Sorry but there isn't a single modern car built today that would impress me like that car did. Craziest thing I ever saw in person on the street.
I'm so old I saw Dyno Don run that Maverick in person once. Early Pro Stock class sold me on building door slammers over going tube chassis dragster or altereds. Evan always finds the cool Fords to show us.
I've got to hand it to you Evan...you bring us "Blue oval" fans FORD. Thanks for your tireless efforts to do just that. I personally appreciate your ongoing loyalty to the brand and all of the magnificent examples that you bring to the forefront. High fives to Evan and team that bring this content to the channel.
What an amazing collection of early Ford Factory built drag cars. I still remember as a kid back in 1964 visiting a ford dealership with my dad shopping for a new Galaxy. We came across a new 1964 Galaxy 500 with the twin flags on the fender that showed 427. Cars were often left unlocked and stored behind a large fence. I set inside and noticed a 4 speed and under the hood was a dual 4 barrel 427. REVan. Your channel always has amazing Ford vehicles and extremely informative. No. My dad didn't purchase the 427 Galaxy.
The 64 Comets afe my dream car . Notice how all the dual quad cars have the carbs on backwards. I have always read that the factory face fords used seats from the Econoline vans.
This is exactly my favorite stuff to see, the old school FoMoCo iron. Incredible cars, I just can't decide a winner: Boss 429, '63 Galaxie, '64 Galaxie? But i'm absolutely confident that at 9:35 you see the best looking motor of the collection. I didn't know about a SOHC Maverick, really looking forward for that video. Damn, why '63 and '64 Galaxies are so awesome?
My Dad worked at a large Ford dealership in Ohio. In 1970, I was watching TV, after finishing my homework, and heard a rumbling noise pulling in the driveway. It was Dad in a new Boss 429 Mustang! He had taken it out for a “test drive” and asked me if I wanted to come along. (Duuuhhh…😉😄) To say it was an amazingly powerful car, would not do it justice. It was more than that. I had heard it was rated at 345 HP. Maybe at 3500 RPM!!😄 Wish I had one today.🙄
Boss 429 is my favorite engine. 427 Cammer is second. We had a 94 Ford Taurus (was hit in a wreck) white exterior with red interior (one year only as far as I know). Favorite race car is Bob Glidden’s American flag themed pro stock Pinto.
Yet another great video! And what a collection it is! Looking forward to the next update. At beginning I saw the Earl Wade banner so knew it was a good one.
Wonderful collect of the best! Love that 63 1/2, great '62 too. I'll certainly be waiting on that Dyno Don episode. Wasn't in to Mavericks, dad bought 2 of my sisters new ones when they turned 16, but I tried to talk them out of them to do something with.
And just think, that Boss 429 can be bored and stroked to close to 600 inches..... Just enough to make use of those massive ports and valves...yeehah !
HAD A 1970 BOSS 429 FRM 1975 TO 1980 PUT WEIAND TUNNEL RAM ON WITH DUAL 850 HOLLY DOUBLE PUMPERS JR HEADERS 4. 57 AND V GATE SHIFTER . IT WAS MY STREET MACHINE . NEVER GOT A 1/ 4 MI. TIME ON IT.
Beautiful stuff! Just a fyi…the 427s that won at LeMans in 66 and 67 were side oilers, first with medium riser, then tunnel port heads…the 427s here are all center oilers, most high risers but that cool low riser too…excluding that Cammer of course!
That was awesome to see. I've been a gear head since i was old enough to watch street cars Back in the day I had a 1967 289ci V8 red with black vinyl top and all black interior with buckets Auto Trans. I sold it about 2 years later because i couldn't pull my self to tear it apart to name it go fast. Traded to a buddy of mine for his 1969 GTO non JUDGE w 389 tripower with a Hurst 4 spd. Later on found out the mustang was a collectors item😮😮😮😮😮 In 1969 mid production FORD changed the rack of the rear window to more of a fast back style. Called my buddy he said he had the car still but it was in back if his garage parked. I asked why as it was always in the garage he told me he TOTALED THE CAR OUT DRAG RACING DROPPED A TRANSLINE SPUN OUT HIT A TREE😢😢😢😢 Also mist people don't realize FORD made a 427, 428,429 cobra jet as well as a super cobra jet motor all bad ass engines ❤❤❤❤
Hello Evan, Just was watching the interview you did with Andy and DV. I thoroughly enjoyed it very much. One of the most informative interviews I've seen in recent memory. I had no idea you had such an impressive resume. Also I agree to help someone to keep it going. I do that with my trade all the time. Teach the new comers to do things right and what can be accomplished if you try and have the desire. Thank you.
i used to go to Custom speed Enterprises on Gratiot ave in East Detroit when i was a kid with my Dad to buy hot rod parts. Dave Lyall later partnered with Clyde Detrick to run prostock with a pinto in the 70s. Clydes son Jimmy Detrick is a big time pro mod driver who last drove the Skinny Kid Olds and won a couple championships in it.
Boss 429 is best pushrod platform Ford ever made. Wish there were more people building the Kaase Boss ‘9s. So much more interesting than the lame 7.3 Godzilla
My buddy has a 64 fairlane he claims is a real lite weight thunderbolt. He’s got both fiberglass and aluminum front fenders and the aluminum bumpers for it, but the 427 is long gone so it’s got a built 331 stroker in it.
Love that 63 factory lightweight. Right now (when no road salt) I daily a 63 Galaxie Z code bench seat 4 speed car. But it’s 398 inches w/Eldebrock Perf RPM H-C-I and a lot more. Fun but still not fast enough for me. 😂 May be selling to get back into a Mustang.
What a great collection. That Dyno Don Maverick showed up at the Hot Rod Reunion in Bakersfield as an absolute time capsule. Then the next year it has an automatic, alumnum tranny tunnel and brand new Dominator cars and a bunch of changes... like touching up the Mona Lisa painting with blonde hair and bigger boobs. Then it sold to a fellow (now deceased) in Florida and he started to return it to original as it appears here.
A friend bought a Boss 429. It wasn't a screamer but a really nice Mustang. Then he started having troubles with water in the oil. Seems there were no head gaskets, per se, Ford used "O" rings around the cylinders. He never could get it to stop leaking, even after replacing the rings several times.
