My partner and I recently completed Sydney - London and return flights in economy on Cathay Pacific, with transit in Hong Kong and were very happy with the attentiveness of the staff and quality of meals. The seats were comfortable and had plenty of legroom (I'm 6'). The return flight from London was delayed so we missed the connecting flight to Sydney. On arrival in Hong Kong the Cathay staff were waiting with boarding passes for a rearranged flight 10hrs later. Because of the delay, they provided accommodation at the airport hotel, which enabled us to get a shower and a few hours sleep, together with food vouchers. Great service, no complaints 👍

I think it’s important to note that Cathay was absolutely hammered by the pandemic. How they are still in business amazes me. Unless they change their business model they will have a hard time recovering from the rest of the quality airlines the region has to offer. Airlines that were back in business far earlier than Cathay. It appears that Cathay quite simply doesn’t know which direction to go. So they cut service to save costs..it’s all they can do for now.

Incredibly, the pandemic probably saved CX. Remember, CX fired much of its staff due to the anti-Beijing protests that rocked Hong Kong in 2019. Had the pandemic not happened, they would have been so short staffed that CX probably would be a subsidiary of Air China right now as it would have collapsed.

I don't think he cares about what we say down in the comments. I suggested a safety notice as the camera flickering in the loo was quite substantial and could trigger a seizure in somebody who is epileptic and prone to seizures when flashing lights are shown to the viewer. This doesn't mean he doesn't care but it seems to me he doesn't bother reading his comments anymore. Or if so, I have a legitimate issue no disclaimer about the flashing lights. Annoys me.

I just flew cathay from HKG to LAX. Honestly, it was one of the best business class flights I've ever flown. The Pier Lounge at HKG at the most amazing food, especially their tea and noodle bar. The seat on the 777-300er was a standard reverse herringbone, which wasn't bad. Entertainment selection was great, and the inflight food (I ordered from their Asian selection) was also on point and tasted fairly traditional.

I feel your 'meh' comments about Cathay might have been a bit repetitive in this video, there wasn't much else to say, but I get it. Also, agree with other commenters, the Chinese dim sum/steamed dim sum in the CX lounges at HKG are amazing, even the CX lounge at LHR T3 has great Chinese food. I would steer clear of just the sausage & egg and try some of the regional specialities.

Just did Cathay Pacific between MNL-HKG on economy and was pleasantly surprised that we got a hot meal (used to be just a ham and cheese pie) with metal utensils. Also happy that they still had in-flight magazines and playing cards. Not bad for an airline that has been losing money for so many years, but it's also about perspective. It seems you missed the key of Cathay. They got amazing noodle bar in their lounges. They are also famous for their Jing tea and their bar. And have you tried their signature drink Cathay Delight on board? I guess you should try them before you have the judgment. For the blanket, probably because it’s not a long haul flight and they only give out amenity kits and blankets only for long haul. Of course there are a lot of downsides of Cathy, mainly because of cost cutting. Food is average on board. But saying Shanghai Airlines is better than Cathay? No way. Price of tickets? Yeah, it’s expensive, probably because hong kongers love going to Japan so much, Hongkongers call Japan “home” (instead of Hong Kong/China). There are never enough flights going to Japan from Hong Kong.

I think The Pier is the much more elegant and up-to-date lounge for Cathay in HK. I appreciate that their fleet is almost exclusively newer wide-bodies, since the bulk of their routes are mid- to long-haul. And I still think their cabin and seats look the best out of all the major full-service airlines --- calming and classy color palette, great storage space and width in bed mode for this type of Business Class seat --- they were one of the first to adopt this seat after all. The service and food, though, tend to be hit or miss these days.

Definitely. I think he had the video title in mind before he made the video, it's all about clicks and views in terms of RU-vid monetization. And he"d flown them before 17 years ago in 2006 when the IFE packed up which he appears to still traumatised from as it was before mobile phones were a thing and apparently books also hadn't been invented back then so he nearly died on that flight. CX for sure has been though absolute hell the past nearly 4 years now if you include the protests so when I flew them in May and June this year after so Iong I was expecting it to really show. And it was the opposite. The Pier lounge was amazing as always ( if as he said the Wing was 15 minutes away from his gate I'm confused why he didn't go to the pier actually) the service was great as always, the seats were exactly as shown - CX are very consistent - and I like those seats. The food was good but admittedly not exceptional like Qatar..The IFE was great. 8.5/10. CX at their current worst are still very much top 5 still for me for biz class. Yes Qatar ( assuming no last minute equipment changes like an ancient 777 2-2-2 config I got last year ) are better, Singapore are better and Emirates it's close but compared to a slew of others I've flown recently in biz such as Lufthansa, BA and KLM Cathay in my view at least are still more than competitive. In first class they are still absolutely superb as my mate who was lucky enough to just experience them said.

For me Cathay got its reputation thirty or so years ago. Other than Singapore Airlines the local airlines were poor (for example Garuda was dicey) but Cathay with its expat (often British) flight deck crew were a standout. I used to travel a lot to Hong Kong for work and the local staff would complain endlessly that our companies travel policy did not allow the use of Cathay - that was a pricing issue - and United with its Asian network were the carrier of choice. And in those days China had few carriers who flew internationally and even fewer you would want to ride.

Cathay's lounge is famous for their Chinese dim sum and dan dan noodle ( peanut based spicy noodle). Much like how Japanese airlines lounge has Japanese udon and tempura served in their lounges. Western eggs and sausages are same world wide. That sky bridge is to their new terminal which mostly serves Hong Kong Airlines. GBA is the new carrier which kinda replaced the now belly-over Dragon Air ( sub company of Cathay) which currently flies China and regional areas around Hong Kong. The name comes from the idea to united Hong Kong and the cities of the Pearl River Delta around the Canton province. A carrier less than a year old. Overall, Cathay had been a great airline but since issues which occurred in HK and COVID, they have since not have a good day and their service and quality has been questionable and especially their food to say the least.

I love their F lounges in HKG and LHR tho have never spent more than a few minutes looking around in their C lounges as I am oneworld Emerald. Even a recent experience in Premium Economy (beginning of June) LHR-HKG-HND was great with an amenity kit and blankets available on both sectors with great food and excellent service, including better elite recognition than on my home airline BA. So I have to think the lack of blankets/amenity kits on your flight may have been a mistake. Pier lounge fantastic as usual - one of the absolute best in the world for my money - hard product great,, food decent ( not as good as Qatar but then whose is ) excellent service, great IFE, great new plane - 8.5/10 being stingy. And that's after the protests, 3 years of HKG being shut and them operating at less than 10 percent capacity and the HK gov seemingly in a constant war with them for purely political reasons with staff morale at all time low. As a Hongkonger, we do understand that COVID dealt a serious blow to Cathay, but there is also one fact that non-Hongkongers may not know. In the early 2010s, when oil prices were at an all time high after the Financial Crisis of 2008 (When Oil was $80 to $90 a barrel), Cathay betted on Oil futures and that their prices will remain high, and purchased fuel for the future 10 years at a price of roughly $70 to $75 a barrel. However, in the mid-2010s, oil prices were much lower all the way until very recently ($20to $40 a barrel), and Cathay lost a lot on betting oil futures. The mid-2010s were also when Cathay's poor service quality first became apparent.

Hong Kong had some of the strictest travel regulations in the world, and was one of the last to let up. Unlike China, HK has no domestic market to rely on- and that’s obvious given the fact that their fleet is primarily wide-bodies. With international travel barred, and domestic travel nonexistent, Cathay couldn’t do anything. The fact that they still exist is amazing, and I feel that they should be given some slack considering that they’re still fighting to survive. We didn't book these seats. He replied, " Oh, it's because you booked with a third party." But when I looked at the second leg of our journey, the exact seats I chose were on that boarding pass. Flown 4 legs with Cathay Pacific this April and I was actually quite impressed. It was a return LHR-HKG-SIN-HKG-LHR on economy and it ticked all the boxes for a decent economy service. A paper menu were presented, the quality and portions of the meals are good, hot snacks available on request (e.g. cup noodles), great IFE, friendly crew, etc. The service was really on par with Singapore Airlines pre-covid, and Cathay actually restored their full pre-covid service half a year before Singapore Airlines (SQ did not serve appetisers at that time). Yes, the cost-cutting of reduced crew onboard was apparent in premium cabins and the meal design in business class is lazy. Also, there are huge differences in service for their key routes to the others, but overall I enjoyed my flights and definitely recommend flying with them in economy or premium economy (but avoid the A330s and Boeing 777-300 (regional config)).

I’m a top tier flyer within Cathay’s loyalty program (Marco Polo Club) owing to my years of flying based in HK. I cannot agree with you more Noel! Ever since post-covid, Cathay’s combination of cost cutting, profit chasing and lack of care for loyalty is pushing a lot of its frequent fliers, including me, away. I have found even my recent flights with BA to be better in hard and soft products, let alone QR. It’s pretty clear that CX wants to make back its money lost during Covid, but the way they’re doing it I don’t agree with. I’m happy to pay a premium to fly CX if it indeed is providing a premium experience, but charging 30-50% more than competitors on the same route while providing just an avg experience combined with the lack of concern for its loyal members is just not acceptable.

Contrary to popular belief, airline food is not microwaved, they use pre-heated galley ovens since microwaves could be potentially interfere or damage other equipment on board. Also, as for your personal experience; you are taking a day-time regional flight, so the number of amenities and level of service is not to the same level that Cathay offers. Also, you are missing out on some awesome lounge experiences. Furthermore, be a bit more adventurous by trying food that isn't western, you had sausages and bacon twice here 😉. You seem to have the worst experience compared to everyone else, which is fine, sometimes that happens.

Former Garuda Indonesia A330 FO here, but had a lot of friends at Cathay. It’s very sad to see how far the airline has fallen but they are slowly on the path to recovery. HK got hit way harder than most places by COVID and tourism/business travel is just coming back. Recently flew CX CGK-HKG-LAX in business (CGK) and first class (LAX) and can say the both experiences were excellent, though you can tell morale is much lower than pre pandemic. Agree with you that the catering has taken a bit of a hit, but I wouldn’t judge an airline based on their breakfast which is a notoriously bad meal (well except maybe Garuda and Malaysia airlines 😝). In terms of ground experience, CX is also opening up the pier F lounge which is probably the best first class lounge imo and they’re just restarting their long haul network - 10 US cities has first class pre COVID compared to just 1 now. I’d revisit things a year or two down the road and on a proper long haul route to get the real “Cathay experience”

Most Asian airlines suffered since Asian countries locked down for far longer than their US/EU counterparts, leaving travel demand depressed for almost an extra year which has been financially devastating, just look at Sri Lankan, Garuda, and Malaysia airlines for 3 of the best examples. For all airlines, COVID has and will continue to have an impact on their bottom line - positive for the US and EU carriers who are taking advantage of massive pent up demand, and negative for others who weren't in a state to take advantage of it.

The thing about languages, Cathay does announcements with languages of the origin and the destination, i.e. Japanese and official languages of Hong Kong, which are English and Chinese. (Verbal) Chinese means Cantonese for people from Hong Kong and do not consider Mandarin as their official language. Meanwhile Mainlanders (as well as Taiwanese) do not consider language other than Mandarin as Chinese. Cathay got into trouble with this issue and I think they decided to just do all. So English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, and maybe language of nearby countries such as Korean and south east Asia, endless.

Great food and service of course so not exactly a hardship but still not what I paid for. This was for an 8 hour flight in 2022. I'd say Cathay was overrated even before their decline due to Covid. Cathay's stellar reputation seems to have been earned many years ago before other airlines upped their games and became more competitive. For example, reverse herringbone seats are now the norm but when Cathay first adopted them they were industry leading and rare. More and more airlines now have doors in business class offering greater privacy which surpass what Cathay offers. In recent decades, airlines like Emirates, Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways have invested in their soft products and adopted phenomenal service standards while Cathay's has remained mostly unchanged. Mainland Chinese airlines have also improved greatly (especially Hainan Airlines and Xiamen Airlines, whose food service blows away Cathay's) and they compete with Cathay for not only Greater Chinese routes but also international ones. Even Garuda Indonesia has greatly improved its hard and soft product. Other Asian airlines (like Singapore Airlines, ANA and JAL) have kept up with the competition and continued to innovate and improve but Cathay sadly has not.

HK will take a few years to recover as a hub, and many Cathay pilots have been poached and their benefits and pay reduced, so many have moved on to other airline. Sad state of affairs for what was once a great airline.

HK used to be the gateway to the east and Australasia. But now you have more direct flights, Middle East hubs and Singapore which is a giant in airport standards and efficiency and see less when arriving. HK seems like things have flown by.

I'm sure like other airlines the vaccine has done a number on pilots health, and passing the medical. But you know the airlines and media do not want that getting out.

Nokia WAS making smartphones back in 2006. The iconic Nokia N95 (with an expandable SD card slot). These was also this Nokia N97 with 32GB inbuilt storage (if you preferred an iPhone-ish aspect ratio with touch-controls.)

Greater Bay Airlines is a HKG based airline and As of May 2023, the airline is operating scheduled service to five destinations, namely Bangkok, Taipei, Tokyo, Seoul and Osaka. They don't operate to Mainland China AFAICT. CX looked to me like a very good product and the Wing lounge had the most amazing apront view which you surely enjoyed. HKG-NRT can be compared in journey to LHR-LCA and the business class experience would be so worse in a moving curtain narrow body aircraft.

Greater Bay Airlines is a new airline company. I seem to remember that they absorbed most of Dragon Air (Cathay Dragon)'s Mainland China routes.
