Yeah, that was an intense audiobook for sure. The part about the collective nurseries broke my heart as a mom. And then the story about the dad who killed himself after being forced to bury his son alive for stealing a little grain.... Just senseless horror. There were so many stories and antedotes like that. How Mao managed to remain in power as long as he did is rather impressive honestly. He was blinded by his grandiosity and entitlement, truly a psychopathic/sociopathic narcissist. Control and power are all that matter regardless of actual catastrophic failure and destruction. Just blame shift and terminate any perceived opposition.
