This is probably the best review I've found. So detailed and technical, not the usual out of the box stuff. Love it!

I got one of these at launch and have been happy with it for gaming ever since they updated the firmware. I wanted a large high end HDR gaming monitor that wasn't OLED and decided I didn't care about value, just wanted something I could set and forget for 5-10 years. I don't think this monitor is worth the cost, but I don't think it's egregious given how little competition exists in this segment. Ultrawide is fun for FPS and racing games.

Right now I don't see these issues with the newest firmware update 1011 for Samsung G9 Neo but I would prefer running it at 120 hz because it's almost impossible to play AAA games at 240 hz. There are no any gpus which can run at this framerate or higher. Only old games. HDR is excellent. HDR Dynamic, VRR on and Local Dimming High are the best options to watch and to not having flicker issues. The brightness is greater than in OLED but there are some auras at the low brightness (very rare scenes, brighter scenes are more frequent in movies or games). OLED as a monitor is not a good idea. Tge burn-in is much more probable in such conditions. 32:9 gives a unique experience, not anything like it. The next thing after VR. 2000 $ on sale. Software measurement is inaccurate. Around 100% sRGB, 85% Adoe RGB, 91% DCI-P3 on rtings.

I watched lots of review vids on this monitor before deciding to buy it. Even with all its issues known, I decided to take a chance on it. Just got it a week ago and luckily I don't have any problems with it yet. Ran a monitor test and no defects showed up. It is making 'popping' noises as the plastic heats and cools. Overall, super happy I pulled the trigger on it. The screen real-estate is awesome outside of gaming. Gaming is super immersive.

I am totally with you on the lack of vertical pixels in today's monitor selection. I'll gladly take excess horizontal pixels if the vertical pixels are within the 4k spec. I'm rocking an ancient Dell U2410 and am patiently waiting for a curved ultrawide HDR 1000 monitor with a high refresh rate and reliable panel technology. It might never come.

I was under the impression that this monitor "had it all" and while I wasn't considering a purchase I had recommended it to a few people who wanted "the best ultrawide". It's not really unique to them. Pretty much all displays that advertise being incredible like this actually cut corners or do tricks to hit the numbers. And most of the time it's yeah 240Hz but hdr off cause it needs to sumb sample and other stuff so it doesn't have bandwidth for hdr anymore, and so the actual real world spec is 120 with hdr, or 120 with good image quality. This thing is just too expensive because the form factor is not common. Actually it's kind of the general truth of wanting to buy the best most top of the line thing right now. You go bleeding edge and you get all the bugs.

Samsung gained a lot of popularity back in late 2000's because of the recession, people were willing to try a less expensive brand to save a few bucks. Unfortunately that price advantage came at a cost, this is a company that will cut corners where ever they can to save pennies.

All my computing life I've had the mission to keep on getting bigger monitors but along the way I've learned that for me, 34" Ultrawide with a nice curve is my limit where I can take in the whole picture without moving my head. If this monitor were offered to me today as a switch from my 2 year old 34", I'd turn it down. I own a CRG9, it is 120hz not 100hz. It is a great monitor in SDR but has terrible blooming in HDR (like the G9 that came after it). For new buyers: I wouldn't buy the Neo G9 as there is a new QD-OLED version coming out this year which likely won't have as many issues. For a more affordable SDR option both the CRG9 and G9 are good choices but the G9's pixel response is significantly faster for dark transitions (there is no black smearing at all). The CRG9 is quite fast for most transitions however you do see some smearing on those dark transitions (still better than any non Samsung VA).

One thing I think I would prefer about that monitor over a 4K TV is pixel density. My current 4K TV might as well be 1080p in all but real estate at the distance that I sit from it. Although it's 55 inch.
@photonboy999
@photonboy999 2 года назад
Pixel density is actually HIGHER on the 4K at the same viewing experience. You'd sit the SAME distance from a curved ultrawide as on a single 27" so we'll just use the normal 27" for comparison. Typically you'd sit a 1:1 ratio for 16x9. Since you'd sit the same ratio for your 4K TV (i.e. 55") the 4K HDTV is 2.25x higher pixel density. So for pixel density to be WORSE you need to be sitting more than 2.25 x 55" which is about 123" or TEN FEET. That's not really a monitor. It's a normal TV. If you were sitting at a desk capable of supporting the Ultrawide then you could just use a 4K monitor and have 2.25x the pixel density as the Ultrawide. So I'm not quite sure what your point is. AND your TV is "1440p" at ten feet. To be "1080p" (at same 1:1) you'd need to be sitting 4x55" which is EIGHTEEN FEET!

Bought one of these, fairly impulse purchase, but got a good price. Was using 2x27" before. Tend to agree: it seems to do everything it claims to, but there are some big "quality of life" gotchya's -- some from Samsung's bad firmware, and some just from the format of the monitor. Feels like it overshoots the mark somewhat, and that a 21:9 with a gentler curve might've been a better option. My gripes / "buyer beware" / things i'd like to see fixed: - Blue power LED. First, noone cares about blue LEDs anymore. Second, it's super annoying at night when blinking in a dark room if you put your PC to sleep. Incase you have this in a bedroom. - I use DP for my PC and 2xHDMI for Work computer in PBP mode (work laptop with a dock, neither support 5140x1440). Swapping between single input and dual-input PBP is awful. The OSD does not let you choose PBP unless it's receiving input. This means you have to boot up a computer before and then effectively change inputs which is time consuming and totally breaks all your window sizing, positioning, etc. In theory this monitor should be just as good for office-type productivity as it is for everything else it sells itself as, and it's fine when you get it going, but it's a massive, massive pain to swap between on a daily basis. - Similarly, "auto switching" between inputs is poor / nonexistent. It will swap if you plug something in, but it won't auto-switch to a already-connected signal and so it just goes to sleep, rather than auto-switching. - Almost no monitor arm options, Ergotron seems to be the only good option, but very expensive. - The "No Input Detected" screen only shows for, seriously, 3 seconds and then the monitor turns off. So you need to press things and wait for it to come back on again and f' around in the OSD to do stuff. Needs to be adjustable to make it, say, 10 seconds or so. Again, sucks if you use multiple inputs on a daily basis. - USB ports don't seem to output power incase you want to leave a cable plugged in for charging your phone or something. Not sure, seems hit or miss here. - There are 3 customisable buttons, but these can only be used for functions in the "Game" section of the OSD, of which there is hardly anything anyway, and even then using them (e.g. turning on the cheater crosshair) makes the monitor go black and then turn back on as if you were switching inputs. You can't program the buttons to do anything actually useful like swap inputs or colour profiles or whatever. - I can forgive it, but boy, lots of movement and wobble when using the OSD joystick. - The "Infinity Core Lighting" thing at the back is dim. If you're hoping to illuminate your desk setup / battle station / whatever with RGB, forget it. It's only practical purpose is to look cool in an open environment where people can see the rear of the monitor. If you have this monitor against a wall, forget it. - The curve is extreme. Even your Chrome or Explorer or Notepad or whatever doesn't look "straight". Takes some getting used to, I guess. This takes some points away from using this for productivity rather than content consumption (games/movies). - Luckily I've not had any major issues with mine, but I can tell there is the "screen door effect" when displaying large areas of white. I imagine this is just a fact of life with local dimming zones. Overall too, no, it's not going to be as good as OLED, but you really can't expect it to be either. Not the monitors fault but worth thinking about: - Poor game support for 32:9. Unless you have specific titles that properly make use of it, it's kind of a waste. - 2 x 27 was nice for fullscreening video on one monitor, and then doing stuff on the other. Trying to fullscreen anything on this sucks. The main issue is video. Apps, sure, get something like FancyZones. But sometimes I want to fullscreen video to the entire left or right half, as in, ACTUAL fullscreen to fill the entire space, no taskbars or titlebars, and then still use the other side for other things. You can do that with PBP, but then you sacrifice other functionality, which defeats the point of buying this monitor. Or you have to deal with changing the configuration back and forward. This is more the computer's / OS' fault though, not the monitors. Still, would love a solution.

I got this monitor last month for around 1600 dollars. Before this monitor, i was using a 27 inch LG 144hz 4k monitor with 2 other monitors on the left and right for misc. Gotta say, i really enjoy this 49 inch monitor and how immersive it is for most games. It's unreal. one of the biggest differences i've noticed is that since there is such a dramatic curve, everything feels centered towards me. looking back at the flat screen 27 inch monitor, everything not directly in the middle is noticeably farther away from my vision. I also love being able to use this monitor in PiP mode with two computers where i can have one side for work and the other for gaming, using mouse without borders to switch between the two PCs with one mouse and keyboard. There are some cons i've noticed though using it for a month. For one, text has a weird discoloration, in fact, this discoloration can be seen in lines/edges of other minor things in games and more. It isn't really noticeable while playing games without text or fast movement, but if i am working, reading, looking at chat in WoW, there is a very noticeable and distracting discoloration which makes it strenuous to read at times. Never have that issue with the 4k 27 inch. Another con is refresh rate in PiP mode. its 240hz in its native state, but in PiP mode, it seems it maxes out the refresh per screen to 120hz. Sadly, i can notice the difference between 120hz and 240hz, and honestly, i can feel it between 120hz and 144hz. i would be alright with the monitors being 144hz in PiP mode at minimum, but it is unfortunate that it maxes PiP refresh rate to 120hz (although the youtuber here said it was 144hz in PiP mode? am i missing something?) There is also the issue with defects/QC with these monitors. the first monitor i received had sporadic vertical flickering on the left side of the monitor, and also the entire monitor would hard flicker black for about a quarter second and come back randomly but it was not very often. probably every several hours. Now what my ultimate dream monitor at the moment would be...might sound crazy.... but it would be a the width of 3 27 inch monitors (so that i could have a bezel-less triple monitor setup) that is the same resolution or higher preferably, that is QD-OLED, HDR, and honestly, it doesnt have to be 240hz, but 144hz minimum in both native and PiP mode. That would literally be the dream. Is that too much to ask!? lol probably, but that would be such an amazing monitor for gaming and work. Please, someone make this monitor! lol.

i'm glad there was so much criticism about this monitor, otherwise i probably wouldn't have gotten it for 1700€. The monitor is awesome, I had the LG 27GN950-B before and it''s no comparison, the Samsung just has so much better black without annoying IPS glow and BLB. The colors were really a bit more accurate on the LG but for me that's not so big of a deal since it's a gaming monitor. Compared to the LG C1, I find the HDR experience even better as the peak brightness is simply much higher than OLED. The blooming is not that bad, it's definitely better than BLB and Glow.

I recently bought the odyssey 49G97T and it’s been amazing. No regrets! I definitely don’t think the Neo G9 is worth it specifically because of what you mentioned, the local dimming ends up being more distracting than useful in the scenarios where local dimming bloom becomes obvious. I also own one of Samsung’s flagship 8k TVs that support local dimming and the exact same problem arises; I really hate when local dimming doesn’t work properly, either over darkening some areas or bloom presenting itself in an obvious way. Sometimes the entire image over brightens and dips down quickly ever so slightly, but it’s enough to ruin the immersion. You can blame it on video meta data, but I notice it even on non-HDR content. It’s my guess that the issues has to do with Samsung’s lighting algorithm or something of the like because I believe TVs from Sony that support local dimming don’t suffer to the same extent as Samsung products. All this to say that Samsung’s local dimming isn’t the best and if turning it off fixes the issues it presents then there’s no point in getting the Neo G9 lol the G97T provides a more consistent viewing experience without the peaks and dips in brightness, even with its pathetic 10 local dimming zones turned on. I’ve personally looked at and played around with the Neo G9 and the G97T side-by-side and in HDR content the Neo G9 does look better because of its peak brightness, and brightness alone, but I have personally decided that the local dimming function, as Samsung implements it, just isn’t worth it.

@gAndres44
@gAndres44 2 года назад
@@unerkannterGeisteskranker I’m talking about my own experience, obviously. If your experience has been bad then I empathize for you, but my monitor experience has been excellent with no issues. The hardware and firmware have worked well up until this point. The monitor came with firmware version 1011.8 out of the box and I’ve been hesitant to update it to the latest firmware version. There’s no reason to update if things are working well for me and I rather not risk a newer firmware version potentially making things go south. According to what I have read, the original G95 is definitely the inferior quality option and the G97 (business variant) is suppose to be the revised model that fixes some of the issues from the original. If you’re talking about the G95 then I can potentially agree with you, but the G97 has have been great in my experience. The Neo G9 is supposedly worse than the G97 with regards to quality control. I think it’s more of a gamble with the Neo G9 when trying to win the panel/monitor lottery. It’s sad to think about since the Neo costs a lot more. Even on the Best US Buy website the G97 has much higher positive reviews than the Neo.

My guess is you are one of the users that just uses very simple settings. All users that I got in contact and asked to check for the bugs could see them. They just ignored them before. But a product is not good just because users ignore the features that are bad. For example, if I don't use the radio in my car doesn't mean that it is ok. I just don't care. With the old G9 users ignore that the 240 Hz are only available in 2 resolutions. You will end up in hell playin 4:3 in 240Hz. It is working but not close to good. Taping in and out to different resolutions (Desktop/game) will often make you connect a second display to get the old g9 picture back. If you don't use 1440p resolutions. The noises the G9 makes all the time. The neo doesn't have all those problems. You just concentrate on some things and ignore others. That is ok for personal chitchat. If you post it under a review, someone like me has to jump in as you painting a wrong picture here.

But damn, getting it to work with the MacBook is such a pain in the ass. I had to buy several USB-C to DP cables until I find one that works and even then, sometimes the MacBook just refuses to send a signal. I found that unplugging the cable from the MacBook left port and plugging it into the right port helps, but sometimes only rebooting the Mac fixes the issue. In my experience, manufacturers only have a vague idea of what they want local dimming to do. It's like they know what they want, implement about 50% of it correctly, and then don't understand that the other 50% of the implementation needs to be done correctly. I've seen it work like this (two displays I owned): bright areas get lots of backlight, dark areas get very little backlight. Then that light is filtered by the LCD panel, but here's the thing: that panel isn't driven any differently, whether local dimming is on or off. The fix is this: with dimmed backlight (say a dark corner in a level), the LCD panel needs to "open up" and un-compensate as it were, and show the detail in this dark corner. This doesn't happen. So you have very little light, and on top of that, the panel doesn't use that available light properly to show you what was intended.
