I once was trying to flash a board for a friend for like an hour. Thought it was the usb drive’s format or that I renamed the file wrong. I started panicking. All of a sudden I saw the wifi antenna ports on the IO….realised I was trying to flash the non-wifi BIOS.🤦‍♂️ 10 minutes later were in windows, latest bios and a ryzen 5000 up and running.

Updating a bios scares me to fire everytime I do it. Mainly worried about a power surge or outage. I have never bricked a board yet doing it. On my last couple of builds they have the bios flash back feature which makes things a whole lot easier. Great call Greg and what an upstanding person for admitting a simple oversight.

Sad that many of these early x570 boards didn't have flashback. Many a board have been dumped as a result. This feature needs to be on boards no matter how "cheap."
@spankbuda7466
@spankbuda7466 2 года назад
It's not a upgraded feature for the PC novice. Manufacturers/retailers do not want to be dealing with bricked board returns and high tech support call volumes. This feature is useless for the vast majority of PC users because they do not mess around with the bios for the most part and most are illiterate when it comes down to this.
@James-jh6wq
@James-jh6wq 2 года назад
@@spankbuda7466 I mean most users won't be overclocking their RAM/CPU, setting PCIe bifrucation, or so on besides enabling XMP, but when say someone wants to upgrade their CPU and need a BIOS update, this feature would be extremely helpful. On top of the fact that not even bios flashback, just a second chip, likely doesn't cost more than 50 cents in bulk considering how small they are.
@qT_p13
@qT_p13 2 года назад
@@spankbuda7466 You say its for the pc novice, then say the average consumer won't update the bios and are illiterate anyway...so it isnt for the novice? @spankbuda7466
@spankbuda7466 2 года назад
My mistake, I was typing and accidentally cleared out "not". But also, when you state that some boards doesn't work with certain CPU's that falls on the end user for not reading the packaging or contacting the manufacturer tech support because of their ignorance. This is when prebuilds are important. Some people shouldn't be building anything without researching and studying first.
@qT_p13
@qT_p13 2 года назад
@@spankbuda7466 clears that up lol. But in this case it really doesn't always fall on the end user, because lots of b50/x570 boards didn't work with ryzen 5000 out of the gate, so how can a user possibly know that when amd advertise new cpus without explaining any of this? Also even some intel b660 boards have this issue with 12th gen and this is the first gen on that socket!

Even on the latest bios, enabling XMP will give you a black screen. I passed this X570 TUF Gaming Plus Wi-Fi to my younger brother, told him don't mess with anything in the bios, and got me the ROG X570-E Wifi, that does actually boot into Safe Mode due to overclocking errors. The first is really just a Dr. Debug LED set on a card, which can give you POST codes on literally any motherboard as long as i have the correct PCI, PCIe, LPC or Debug UART connector. And the latter allows you to rescue any screwed up BIOS flashes and force flashing any BIOS bypassing all security checks.

Couple things: First, I would never go straight for a "Beta" version of ANYTHING when attempting to troubleshoot something with an updated version of something. Start with the latest STABLE version and THEN and only then, test the beta version. Especially with a BIOS, once you update to that beta version, you may no longer be able to downgrade the BIOS back to the latest stable version if you run into bugs that are being caused by the beta build. Second, the BIOSrenamer tool has nothing to do with whether or not the BIOS can be read by the board and flashed via normal means (through the BIOS flash utility within the BIOS). The BIOSrenamer tool is specifically for renaming the BIOS file for BIOS *Flashback* functionality (if the board has it).

Hello. Nice video. It's OK simple things get overlooked. I myself have a written checklist for when I do repair - so I don't overlook or skip the simple steps that might result in the fix / repair. Thanks for doing these very good and helpful videos.

I've been in computers for 27 years give or take. Working in a computer shop when i was 15. Once I got higher up I got people under me and made a simple sort of guide for troubleshooting.. like disconnect everything not essential, reset bios, etc etc. You start with the simplest of things and work from there.. nothing much has changed in those aspects from the earliest computers till now really, some things got easier some got more annoying (RGB and tons of fans) etc. This could've been easily avoided following some easy steps if you want to be consistent.

For those boards, everytime the BIOS is reset , it will go to a memory training cycle and adjust the timings correctly, could be just that
@azntactical4884
@azntactical4884 2 года назад
I think that is for most boards. With the motherboards I have, the BIOS gives an option to turn the learning off or on. When it relearns, it will cycle a few times before the actual boot.

I know this is a dated video but I wanted to add that a lot of motherboards warn you to disable the TPM before flashing. It's real easy to miss completely disabling the TPM as it can be partially on the motherboard but also on the CPU. A bios update without disabling the TPM can act just fine but later on, there can be funny little glitches that pop up randomly and it's all because the bios is corrupted.

Great video! I just wanna mention that most new boards have recovery flash features often called flashback so even if you manage to corrupt your bios you should be able to reflash easily just with a USB stick and some patience!

A cool video/giveaway idea.. over time collect ‘broken’ parts from viewers PCs.. get them all fixed (filming the process where possible) then build the pc and do a give away!

that is odd I never had a newer motherboard do that to me. It's called Bios Bit rot. But I only came across that on very old motherboards. That one is way too new. Very odd. Cause Bit Rot happens many years later.

for future refence use biosrenamer for flashback tool! this is a feature that allows you to flash the bios without cpu and memory, all you need is power to the board and that is it. plug usb in the back of board usually named bios, press the bios button and keep it held there for 5 second give or take then release button and wait till it's done which you will know by no more flashing. other than that you can use the normal (not renamed) bios to flash in the normal bios.

This needs to be shared. I've been praying to god that my motherboard isn't broken for almost a year now since it had the same problem and what I always do is just reseat the RAM to different slots and the damn DRAM led light is on so I ended up just putting my pc to sleep and not shut it down for months now since I was so scared that it won't post if I shut it down.

I have a suggestion. Make a check list. Start with all the common problems at the top and work your way down to the bottom. Put things like check bios. Clear CMOS at the top. And then things like Cpu Pins etc etc down the line. Might help you stay more organized while trouble shooting. You do great but this might help you stay in line more.

Very rare to see tech RU-vidrs post their own L's as a learning experience and a precautionary tale. Looks like we all learned something here. Good stuff. Always good to learn from our own mistakes and mistakes of others so we all don't repeat them.

G'day Greg, Great video showing the BIOS Update, too many people in comments make out it is So Scarrrrry & not something you can do but really it is as easy as installing any program. My Grandfather taught me that no matter how old you are or how much you think you know there is always something new to learn because "Nobody Knows Everything" Plus never be too proud to admit if you missed something or made a mistake because we all do as "Nobody is Prefekt"

There is a clear cmos jumper that you could have tried first Sometimes connectors can get a bit of corrosion buildup that blocks electrical connections. Reseating the component a few times can sometimes clean off the connection and the component starts working again. The user may also have been playing around with memory overclocking or bios mods and bricked the board and done something like change timings on one stick that didnt work
