I’ve only been an Elvis fan for a little over a year, but that first phrase sung without his captivating vibrato confirmed a painfully obvious “no” to the question.
I’ve been a fan of Elvis for almost sixty years … I’m 72 now. Elvis had such a beautiful voice, & I have heard it so many times, that I could immediately say that that voice was Not his. It was heavy & dull with none of that wonderful Elvis vibrato, which makes his voice so unique & instantly recognisable to those who have enjoyed listening to it for many, many years. Interesting to watch this. Thanks for a great analysis.
@violetsterling67 Yup...I'd even go as far as saying that I've heard great Elvis's impressionists sound very close to his voice. Though as we know, Elvis emotion can never be or anyone's can be copied.
Detective Fil gets right down to it. There’s no way, that vocal is Elvis. If I ever make it across the pond, it would be a pleasure to hang, jam, and talk music with you. I just love your channel. Your appreciation for anything of quality is your forte. You’re the Best Fil.
I grew up hearing Elvis and realized that wasn't Elvis. Your pitch monitoring software confirmed my opinion. Thank you for the analysis and another wee trip down memory lane for me.
It’s a little bit painful to think that anyone had to seriously wonder whether that voice was Elvis’ or not. Three words in and it was a definite “that’s not Elvis!” Love it when Elvis is the topic, though! 😊
Fil, that is not Elvis's voice! It only took a second for me to know that was not Elvis! Elvis had a very distinctive voice that I know immediately! Great presentation , but I knew right away that was not Elvis doing the vocal! Good job , Fil 💜
This was a really interesting video! Even though you can tell from just listening that the voices sound different it was really cool to see the differences in detail in on screen to prove why it wasn’t Elvis’s voice.
Dear Fil, I greatly appreciate your analyses. You bring a lot of clarity into the ocean of musical confusion. People have often told me, "You have to listen to this guy. He sounds just like Elvis!" And when they play "that guy's" song, I get frustrated because I can't understand what people are hearing. Such situations confuse me immensely. No wonder arguing over taste is pointless and a waste of time. Every pair of eyes has its own painter, and every pair of ears has its own musician. THANK YOU!
Welcome to the rabbit hole. I've been here longer, but the same thing happened. I saw "British guitarist analyzes ..." and suddenly I'm binge listening to Fil. We're lucky to have him.
I was fortunate enough to see Elvis live in concert twice, when I was a teenager, and I didn't think that first singer was Elvis. I wasn't 100% sure, but I see that I guessed right. Thank you for another great video!
😂😂❤😂 ANOTHER real give-away is that imitators can ONLY imitate Elvis's heavier tone and are crap at trying to imitate Elvis light voice. Elvis' head voice has such body that imitators are stymied. They can imitate a heavy tone with effort, but his light voice is so rich it's untouchable ❤
@@davidsmock8235 No. I've heard all of them. And they only capture bits and pieces. Elvis chameleon voice changed multiple times in his very short life. NO impersonator comes anywhere near elvis's soul depth and diversity. One listen to the critically acclaimed 1960 "it's now or never' CONFIRMS this. The huge difference between 1955 Elvis, and 1968, is striking. His diverse voice was multi-faceted
Great analysis and comparison. You have so much musical kowledge. The way you use your abilities to inform your audience is easy to understand and enjoyable.
Great video, Fil! I love how you can demonstrate all kinds of styles with your voice to clarify what you’re teaching us! You’re extremely talented! 🏆🏆🏆
Great video. I listen to Elvis everyday, and when you were playing the first song, right away I thought, it's not Elvis, because I noticed that there was no vibrato at the beginning. Then you mentioned it too. 😂
Not Elvis. Within the opening line I could hear it's not Elvis singing. Nice video... Today 47 years ago, 16th August, Elvis passed away. His untimely death left the world stunned. He was huge in my Country. He will never be forgotten. The most beautiful voice ever. 🙏🎧🎶🇿🇦🌍
Hi Fil, Very interesting one tonight! The first one was definitely not Elvis. You are right, Elvis had a brightness and warmness that is unmistakable and then there is his natural vibrato. His Gospel songs are like none other, they are just beautiful. Also it was his only his Gospel songs that won him a Grammy. Great job on this analysis. You Are The Best! Debbie☮️
“Crying in the Chapel” is so beautiful. “Lonely in the Chapel” seems like a cheap knockoff or an auto tuned version even though it didn’t exist then. Clicking to the closest line. Elvis’s head voice is mesmerizing. Elvis’s song makes me long for a quiet moment.
Thank you so much! I’ve sung everything from pop to opera and the voice fascinates me but in all my research and lessons no one ever explained vibrato in the way you have. It had been a mystery until now! I love your passion and brilliance ! Wish I had discovered your channel sooner! ♥️♥️♥️
first phrase was enough to know it was not elvis, then when you hear elvis singing crying in the chapel it could not be mistaken it is wildy different. no need really to analyse it, so obvious only your ears are necessary thanks Fil
Finally more of Elvis....thank you, Fil. I wholeheartedly agree....the uncredited version is not the voice of Elvis Presley. Elvis' unique and magical voice will rock on till the end of time🤘🏼💯⚡❤️
Commenting before I watch the whole video. As soon as you played Lonely in the Chapel from the first few seconds I knew it wasn't Elvis...I'm betting thats the outcome at the end of the video too
I've listened to a bit of Elvis, even played a few gigs backing Elvis imitators, which had me working with the originals to get a feel for the music. The first line, I thought, "that's not Elvis."
I’m a radio host of a nationally syndicated Elvis radio show. I do voices and I know the Elvis voice very well. That is clearly 100% NOT Elvis. I think most hardcore fans will know. Thanks for all the great videos 😉
Another great music theory class fil. His vibrato was so. natural. I just saw an old interview with Art Garfinkel that criticized elvis as not being a good singer because he had an uncontrolled vibrato! A bit of jealousy I think. Thanks !
@@stevemurray7020 He could control it but it came naturally. I’ve heard him sing songs like guitar man and big boss man no vibrato to be heard. So AG was wrong to say that! Besides a vibrato is used in operatic music a lot so he is basically saying that the well known opera singers weren’t good singers either! Sounds like sour grapes to me. Art voice sounds feminine and too saccharine sweet!
@@AJ-jc1yeWell, I think Art was amazing. But I think you are also correct, that it sounds like a bit of jealousy. :) They just had very different voices. And aren’t we glad!
I’m a musician and an Elvis fan- definitely not EP. I will say; as a vocal analyses - the start of Crying in the Chapel- is the softest vocals I’ve ever heard” the tears I shed were tears of joy” very unique..,
Great video - I adore it when you cover Elvis. You really highlight his originality. After visiting his home here in Tuplelo, I experienced a little insight into how his singing evolved from a very young age, so it makes perfect sense that he sings with that vibrato and "cannot" stop it. Oh and also - you really do a great job highlighting with your own voice what he is doing - you sound marvelous!
Like many other very long-time Elvis fans, I knew instantly it wasn't Elvis singing. I've never heard Lonely in the Chapel and was very interested in the back story. But I wish artists who want to pay tribute to Elvis, wouldn't try to imitate him. I don't like it. Elvis had a very unique voice, so much emotion that pulls you in. I do so appreciate your expertise and ability to explain to someone like me the technical differences in voices. Thank you.
Hi Fil, I could hear clearly that these two songs were definitely by two different singers. I didn't know about the similarities until you mentioned them. Thank you for this interesting and informative analysis! Rock!
How funny, I just had an Elvis night! Nice choice, even though I'm a bit behind on your videos. I have a lot of health issues and not always up to being online. But it is fun to be able to stream you for several videos at a time! Love you Fil!
Completely agree with you Fil. That is somebody attempting to sound like Elvis with an imposter song... It is not Elvis. I grew up listening to Elvis. Great job with your analysis.
I just discovered this channel a few days ago, I've been enjoying it immensely, especially all the attention to old-school artists from many decades ago. And that Gondor U t-shirt is awesome!
Thxs for proving technically what my ears tell me. I've been listening to Elvis music for almost 50 years and although I get why casual listners might think it is Elvis as a Fan you realize pretty soon it's not him.
I'm a bit of a voice mime, and I knew almost immediately it wasn't Elvis. There re characteristics that even the best of voice mimes can't quite replicate. We can mimic certain aspects the voice of someone, but it's some of the characteristics that can't be matched. Voice mime is something I've done since I was about four, and that's now slightly more than sixty years.
Well done. Your comments on his vibrato were interesting. My wife sings with vibrato exactly as you described for Elvis. It’s like automatic and she doesn’t even realize she’s doing it.
Darn you, Fil, now this song is stuck in my head! It's actually a nice tune, patterned after Crying in The Chapel. Wish we did have a version of Elvis singing Lonely in the Chapel.
I don’t think anyone could say thats Elvis singing, nothing like the depth and feeling Elvis had. I grew up listening to him and think he was the best singer ever, just amazing. The first voice is like a Karaoke singer , not even close
Nancy Sinatra herself has stated in more than one interview that they were merely friends, It was strictly platonic. It was media back in the day and fans that perpetrated the myth they were romantically involved. As for the vocal, As soon as I heard it my ears and instincts were saying not Elvis. I'm glad you're analysis bore this out.
More Elvis vocal analysis please. I love his early 60s voice: Surrender, it’s now or Never, the Girl of my best friend are few of the examples of the great early 60 recordings.
Another great job Fil. I knew right before you stopped it the very first time that it was not Elvis. I didn't need to see it on the software!! The first two or three seconds was all it took!.
Thanks for an interesting music analysis that really gave my ears goosebumps! I think it’s safe to say that Elvis Presley’s voice is among the most recognizable in history and to this day. I appreciate how you explained in detail how much technique his voice had. As for the voice on the left side, yes there might have been some similarities but as I mentioned, the voice of Elvis is recognizable without any doubt. Thanks for doing this, Fil!
