I might have the brand and timeframes completely wrong, but I remember a company definitely tried this quite some time ago, and the tech just wasnt there yet...also it was still a phone first

the problem is the Google Pixel Camera app has to be modified to work with each different phone model, I'm not sure if there is enough community demand to port a version for this device, then again you never know if a Chinese guy would port it

when you compare the Yongnuo to the Fuji, you are also comparing lenses, you should use the same lens to get an actual comparison of the camera. not to mention the iPhones quality and saturation all software pretuned

Should be comparing like for like lenses in terms of quality. You do not necessarily want to adapt the Fuji onto the Yongnuo because the filter stack in front of the sensor for Fuji might be quite different than this m43's sensor. He SHOULD be using either the Panasonic 42.5mm f1.2 or the Olympus 45mm f1.2. Its clear this Yongnuo lens is cheap garbage.

This is actually a stupid comparison and at the beginning of the video Linus was acting out dropping the device just to give the camera already a comical presentation. Years and years of tech development under the belt of an iPhone and so much tech with an XT4. He could actually use other low end mobile phone brands and models to compare that with or a low end camera from fuj or from Canon and nikon. Obviously this device was not meant for world market, that's why we are not having it in shops, I had the Samsung version years ago and it worked I love it. If Yongnou develops a a final world market version, I would buy it. A phone with high res photos and videos plus interchangeable lens, that should be awesome for a novelty.

I actually really liked the pictures from the Yongnuo. The images looked less sharpened, the depth of field was nice, and the colours seemed more pleasant even if they were more red/purple than reality at times. Obviously the fujifilm was the best of the bunch though.

Most cameras use the Lens Aperture at Max opening for autofocus, the camera calculates the exposure with your selected aperture and when you shoot it the Lens closes the aperture to the selected aperture. Yongnuo seems to calculate the exposure with the Lens wide open and not compensate for the real aperture selected. Try shooting at 1.7 and see if the exposure is consistent

Look up Arthur R's video on the subject of exposed sensors while talking to the video. He did a demo on getting a sensor dusty, scratching it, etc. Ended up not having an issue except in extreme conditions.

IIRC one selling point of such device is that it can be used to livestream with better image quality at ease. Alternative method to achieve something similar would probably involve getting a capture card and a computer to set the whole thing up, or use even more ridiculous professional broadcast equipment. And you also get celluar data built in, though unfortunately no multi-carrier fusion I guess. Though now that a lot of months have passed, got the feeling that this kind of device could really use some better SoC and ISP. If newer chips can make phone camera look better, it can certainly make camera camera better, right? That would probably be some very price efficient high quality livestreaming solution.

Anyone remember the LG Viewty phone? It was from 2008 and had a similar look just with a lens that retracted into the body and not removable. I reckon an update of that idea would be better, a camera like the RX100 or Canon G7x with phone and data capabilties.

I don't know, all i think is that they put zero color correction or sensor color compensation (pretty sure no sensor out-of-the-box would create a perfect image if just read directly aka unprocessed).. I wonder what'd happen if you'd run a proper camera app on it like Open Camera (probs still needs alot of settings done)

These things were around in 2014, Samsung Galaxy Camera, Panasonic DMC-CM1 with a 1" sensor, and Nokia Pureview 808.

That magenta tint looks a lot like IR contamination. And the ND probably has an IR filter built in so that's probably why the tint is not there when the ND is on it. Basically... Yongnuo cheaped out and dod not add an IR filter to the sensor. The vignetting is harder to explain though.

the DR overall is better (obvious, larger sensor) but violet color cast is due to a bad wavelenght calibration. it goes well over 730nm. a good ir cut filter would do.

Since the mount is m43 putting the Olympus 9mm or 14mm body cap lens would keep it manageable. Keep a real lens handy in case you need it.

Well, Linus defended the exposure saying that if all the information is there, you can tweak it later. But isn't the whole selling point of this device that you (supposedly) take high-quality images and video and then directly upload them to social media? Those two uses seem contradictory to me.

A mirrorless SLR like Phone would be good. Like just add the upload direct to Messenger or Instagram. Though both of them will compress the image but still having a fast way of uploading it is something to consider. Then giving it a prime lens with an aperture of 1.8 or lower that you can adjust will take it to a whole new level.

A few software upgrades and hardware generations later, with a better lens, this could become an amazing product. On the other end, my Fuji cameras can automatically send images to my phone when I turn them off, so sharing on social media is getting easier and easier. Can't wait to see large sensor cameras with strong computational photography elements. I use real cameras together with used smartphones for $100 because for me the quality just isn't there even on the expensive flagship phones.

For the language part, the second option next to Chinese is “adding another language”, have you guys tried it after connecting to the WiFi and VPN to mainland China? Many functions which needs to connect a server in China may not be reachable in North America without VPN (not the case in Europe) and someone is apparently stopping Chinese companies supplying services via network.

The purple cast looks typical of IR or UV contamination due to low filter quality. Chances are the filter glass you put up front improves nonvisible light rejection rate.

The strange color issues on the Yongnuo look like problems with the sensor dealing with infrared. If they used ND filters as they implied, that would definitely add to those problems. They're most obvious in dark fabrics etc. I'd be curious if using an IR Cut filter would solve many of those issues

I really like the Yongnuo's photos actually. Like I can see myself using it to take photos and edit it in lightroom to look like it was shot on film. Like it just has that feel to it.

The Yongnuo looks like it has IR bleed, and was made worse when the ND filter was put on. If they coupled it with an IR filter, it could be improved tenfold.
