IS THIS Why old SHOVELHEADS ARE So HATED ??!! 

I feel your pain. Just picked up a 83 Harley FLHT Shovelhead and going through everything, and I tell you what, some of the things people do and the neglect , just mind-blowing.

Started riding in '64 had the same issues with Panheads. Any body who thought they knew one end of a wrench from the other would attempt to work on them. Early rigid frames had the side car mounts and every other mount ground off. "Raking" frames was a thing. Nobody wanted a stock bike in those days. Indians were throwaways, absolutely nobody wanted one. A lot of shovelheads had the topends hijacked to convert to a pan/shovel. Everybody's house had the Pan rocker covers for ashtrays. The heads were considered junk. Nobody foresaw the nostalgia craze any more than they foresaw $60k "choppers".

Exactly what you said, most of the shovelheads are ripped. I build mines frame off with the right parts without bling bling. That was 20 years ago. Was allover Europe with it, put thousands and thousands miles on it and It still runs very well. Just maintain your sh!t and it will work for a looooongtime. I'm still buying and restoring them, but you have to buy every box of OEM parts you find.

The problem with the shovel is at that point in time, anybody and everybody was customizing them, not the right way but their way. If you found a Shovel a real mechanic worked on ya had a good bike.

Bought an 81 FLH 80 with a rebuilt motor and new wiring harness all stock. We shall see

Yep old classic bikes sometimes have alot of non standard stuff on them which is not always good. Cool bike u got behind you there.

Yep I've been working in 1980 that somebody is tried to make it into a fancy bike and I'm trying to make it back into a regular daily rider.. I trained documented on my channel the best I can but I just point shooting go

You can get a new vintage HD motor flat head, knucklehead, panhead, evolution, even Sportster engines and build your own bikes around them. Build it the way you want it to be not what the government regulations say you can have. Build your own for less than people who ask silly money 💰 for a wornout bike that needs a frame up restoration anyway. You won't have any mechanical issues that the new ones have. Pick out everything you want and have it powder coated and assemble it like a die cast kit. You will be so much better for it.

I PICKED UP A 83 F X R WITH A SHOVEL HEAD . And found a 54 or 55 Drop seat Pan frame . And a Ratchett 4 speed well the frame was a Roller . After I swaped everthing over had no problem they Have to be Dialed in . If a person is not inclined MECHANICALLY . Best have a lot of Money or dont Think about a Harley . Or a motorcycle period . Find a pair a good shoes for peddling a Bicycle 👍

I bought my Shovel over 20 years ago, and I'm the 3rd owner. It took about 10 years to right the f:ckups of the previous 2 owners and replace some of the crap stock stuff with quality aftermarket stuff. That said, my daily '81 'Lowrider' is the most dependable and trouble free bike I've ever owned, and that's sayin' somethin'. Ride on Ffej. Keep keepin' it real.

I like the color though I must say, titty pink does have a nice ring to it.

I bought my first shovelhead a 77 lowrider in 1990 and between there and now I have had 50-60? Other motorcycles which included Japanese, Italian, british and and now at 64 another 1981 lowrider. What made me buy this was not so much nostalgia but more the frustration of owning several twin cams...and they Slate the AMF era? These twincams were the worst POS I have ever owned so many faults! Overstretched engines and so delicate..everything just seemed to break 😂

My brother-in-law had one way before I did, he told me that they were awesome because you could fix them with a cresent wrench, I cringed heavily. I will take a Shovelhead anyday over a 2012 +

It came with an S&S carburetor that was nowhere near where it should be now I got a running good but. I want to put a Bendix on there I found one I'm going to have to build it I put a key in on there but that thing was just terrible.. I had that key in for quite a few years and I rebuilt it but it goes cough cough cough..
