A new NAS vendor has entered the chat - welcome UGREEN! With much fanfare UGREEN has raised over $5 million on KickStarter, reinforcing the market appetite for NAS alternatives. We know UGREEN from their power stations, which have been highlighted by rugged build and impressive design.
Now with their line of NAS products, UGREEN aims to shake up another industry. In this video we review the UGREEN NASync DXP6800 Pro. This is their 6-bay unit (with dedicated boot SSD and two M.2 expansion slots), with an impressive hardware spec. Central to the NAS is a 12th Generation Intel Core i5 CPU with 10 Cores 12 Threads. This is paired with 8GB of DDR5, expandable to 64GB. UGREEN has also included twin 10GbE ports on board in addition to twin Thunderbolt 4 ports.
And there's much more...the hardware spec is impressive, but what about performance and usability? Brian and Kevin dive into all of that in this video review of the UGREEN DXP6800 Pro NAS.

Glad to finally see a 6-bay UGreen NAS review! I backed the 8-bay and would like to see that next! If these UGreen NAS'es performs as expected then I might get this 6-bay too as an off-site backup. The hardware specs of these UGreen NAS'es just puts Synology to shame. This is coming from someone who owns and luvs his Synology NAS'es and have them for years. 😅

Can you tell me precisely, what 10Gb network controller is build in? And does the PCIe port or one of the NICs share its PCIe lanes with other devices?
@sinisterpisces
@sinisterpisces 2 месяца назад
Awesome video. Thanks! Have you been able to boot into Linux to look at the wiring on the m.2 slots via lspci? My understanding is that, at least on the 8-bay model that NAS Compares tested (around the 12m8s mark), one of the slots was PCIe 4.0x4, and the other is PCIe 3.0x2. I realize, as a home user, that being stuck with PCIe 3.0x2 in an NVME mirror (assuming the fastest speed is the slowest drive) would still be great. However, given the price of both the six bay and especially the 8 bay, and the complete lack of any sort of warning about this in the marketing materials, it's a bit off-putting. I'm hoping it's some sort of software limitation, but it seems more likely a choice was made to ration the available PCIe lanes on the CPU. Still. The 8-bay is a $1500 MSRP device, and the cheapest discount on the Kickstarter was still $1000, which is a great deal for that much storage with those specs, but not at all cheap. And nothing on the public specs mentions a discrepency in the assigned lanes between the m.2 slots. It's off-putting, and is making me seriously reconsider my current pledge for the 8-bay. Not because it's not realistically enough for my needs, but for $1000 (or $1500), I really feel like I shouldn't be getting less performance than I'd expect from a fully spec'd slot. That's the sort of compromise I'd expect from a cheaper system, and really has me re-evaluating just building my own, or saving my money for an HL15.

I just added the 6-bay too along with my previous 8-bay I backed after seeing in Amazon that QNAP's & Synology's 6-bay NAS'es I'm looking at are between $700-$1000+ that doesn't even come close to specs UGreen has. 😮‍💨Worse come to worst.... Nice starting with raid6, I get a lot of hate with recommending raid6 for primary storage when you have 5 or more drives (I agree 4 bays is where I kinda draw the line with raid6 use but if your using above 4tb drives raid6 is recommend) , just wish nas's came with 5 bays as defualt, usually 2, 4 or 8 and sometimes 6 but not 5 (then again if your wanting to use hotspare a 6+ bay is ideal with raid6 or 5 as it supports live replace so it only mirrors the failed drive unsure if ugreen supports this thought) Impressive little box the whole ugreen layout really does look like Synology dsm os dedicated is drive is intresting hopefully replaceable (I would preferred it to be redundant but it's ugreen choice I guess) something you didn't make a big point about is the standard built in dual 10gbe ethernet ports (most nas are 2.5gbe now with stupid Synology still persisting with 1gbe ports in 2022 never mind in 2024 as well) I guess it's because your used to dealing with 25-100gbe on your other toys in that room The gpu in the resource monitor will be the actual igpu on the cpu (things like plex can use it, doesn't need to be a dedicated gpu)

I'm looking forward to a full review - but I am also concerned about the use of a port multiplier instead of multi-port SATA on these drives. The early performance tests by others show that it may be a bit hamstrung by the performance on the 4 bay unit. From a lspci posted on forums, it appears that the same SATA multipler is in place for the 6 bay units, which will handicap total disk writes to the SATA disk to 300mb/s total, rather then 300mb/s per each disk. I think the benchmarks will have to tell the story here. The 10GB/s may be totally wasted unless you are only writing to the SATA disks, or you replace their OS with truenas and set up caching with ZFS on the SSDs.

OO. Actually a NAS with built in PSU. That is nice, I hate these external bricks. Unfortunately their 2 and 4 bay model still uses external bricks. Shame. There reason I care about PSU and small bay models, is because it would be a perfect building block for a ceph or k8s cluster. And with bigger models, you sure get a bit cheaper per bay, but still is stuck with same memory, cpu and nic, so that is not great. If I could get 10 of these 2 bay models, that would be way more interesting for me actually.
