Also unreals realism shouldn't be the only factor of making games. I feel like that aspect is incredible but graphics aren't what make games fun

Creativity is what makes the engine great. Easy documentation and hlw it can cater to artists and storytellers and musicians. All these can lead to very distinct games that sure may probably look AAA but feel unique

Maybe not, but in some genres it certainly helps. Frankly,I play very few games with cartoonish art-styles - just doesn't work for my sensibilities.

I'm still very early in my journey, started with Unity and moved to Unreal, and yes I'm really enjoying Unreal and yes it's good for indie games. But also, is Unity good for indie games? Yes. Is Godot good for indie games? Yes. I think it's all down to personal preference. Watching a lot of other devlogs lately, I've seen some phenomenal things come from individuals using every game engine. It's a great time to be a creator.

Similar story and fully agree. Started out with Unity, switched to Unreal. It's basically like each one is a different massive toolbox where many tools are shared and some have more specialized versions of the others tools. I could fix my car with my woodworking toolbox, but it's going to be more of a struggle depending on what I am needing to accomplish. Same applies with the reverse.

I believe that one of the big contributors to the popularity of indy games is, indy games are made to be enjoyed while Tripple-A games are made to fliece gamers for their money. Many of the now tripple-A game studios produced much better games when they still operated out of daddy's garage. Sid Meyer games were most enjoyable in the age of the Amstrad and Amiga. Every newer, more powerful itteration of Sid Meyer's Pirates was less enjoyable than the one before, despite having better graphics and better mechanics, better scripting, new mini games, etc... The early Doom and Wolfenstein games were innovative and awesome...all the Doom Clones (every 1st person shooter) created since is lack luster, just the same old slug fest and only got their brand recognition and claim to "most realistic graphics ever" to attract players. And that is where the issue lies. Tripple-A is in the business of making money, and that means, sticking to the tried and true, innovation is a risk the accountants in head office are not willing to take. Indy creators are CEOed by (aspiring) game developers, not by lawers and accountants. They make games to be enjoyed, not to rake in the big bucks.

Its a very good looking engine, but sadly as an indie dev its so bloated and has such a high learning curve its almost impossible to make a viable game without 3-5 years of work by which time things have changed so the statment is not entirely true that a lot of devs are moving into it but they will dabble.

Not true. As a 3D Artist, I found UE is much easier to learn than Unity. The UI/UX is similar to many 3D software that I ever use. And Blueprint is amazing for beginners. How long it depends on the game, but you can make fairly simple games in a couple of months.

@@alzearafatI agree. I never understood why people say ue5 is harder when people like artist who don't code think it's simpliet
@DmitryAndrushchenko

@@user-ry4xn3bx4l Perhaps it's because Unreal has terrible C++ API documentation and an incomparably worse experience with code? I've started to learn it several month ago, before I've worked 10+ years on Unity. Coding experience is ugly as f**ck, I really hate it. I hope that the quality of the other systems compensates for this shortcoming.

"Is Unreal Engine Good for Indie Games?" the answer is YES, and nothing else. Unreal Engine is nothing short of a powerhouse of a software.

I feel like Unity is better for indie game dev. It's like a 5GB software that runs on a laptop and is focused on performance. sure it is not comparable to UE5 graphically, but those demos only run on extremely powerful machines and last generation consoles, they are not relevant in everyday life.
@alzearafat
@alzearafat Год назад
Not true. I mainly use laptop for my UE development. If your game is stylized, you can use whatever machine. Yes, it needs more space, but space is cheap anyway. What expensive is buying countless of 3rd party plugins from the asset store because Unity does not have it.

The idea that indie is something new shows a serious lack of wisdom on the history of video games. Dude, literally EVERY FUCKING VIDEO GAME ever made in the 70s and early 80s were programmed by ONE person for each game. Every Atari game, early Activision game, almost every Apple II game has one person credited to its creation. Games started indie and became something else. Now we have a resurgence on the beginning. To say this is some new phenomenon is insane and ignorant.
@randomutubr222
@randomutubr222 Год назад
Calm down buddy. He didn't even say "indie is new".... He said that "best indie game" is something that is getting traction in award shows, that indie games are actually competing with the AAA studios in a way that hasn't really happened in decades, and that modern game engines have made it easier than ever for indies to develop games of high quality and polish. And all of that is true...

I know gamejams exist but don't put your selfworth to your games. Don't let your game be defined by how good it is. Instead enjoy the process of making stuff

UE5 looks and sounds free but its actually expensive for indie devs and i dont recommend it for example you need an expensive gaming laptop to run ue5 lumen, nanite was designed wth tripple AAA games in mind. (I am talking about high poly budget games , which is a non starter for indie developers.) Having understood this I stuck to using Unity until Unreal starts making their engine low entry level friendy.

As far as I know they working on verse script so it will be something mid level between c++ and blueprints like c# in Unity.

I dont know... Just change the settings of the editor from Epic to medium or something? That makes things a lot better. Im having a great time learning to do my first game projects on Unreal and reading this felt weird. I also have a shit computer and has 0 issues anyway
@landonp629
@landonp629 Год назад
Much of this is a heavy generalization. Are you saying that indie games can't have hi-poly art styles and realism? Why? What is preventing that, other than this age-old mentality that indie games shouldn't try to compete with AAA-studios on looks? There is this myth going around that you need a team of hundreds to make something high polygon, etc. If you are trying you are trying to make a game on a laptop or want some old-school art style, or like to make 2D games - okay - Unreal might not be the best fit... But there is NOTHING stopping an indie game dev from making a AAA-quality game in terms of 'looks', especially with an engine like Unreral, which makes that fairly easy. Frankly, I'll be honest - who is making games while working on a low-quality laptop anyway? I'd assume most game-devs in a first-world country are using PC's to build games with, not laptops. This is another generalization that needs to go away.
@landonp629
@landonp629 Год назад
And frankly, Unity is simply too expensive price-wise. Yes, it has a free tier - but that tier is fairly well locked down and lacks some features that you'll need to pay up to $2,000 a year to unlock. Unreal doesn't hide features behind a paywall, gives you access to the engine source code so you can make adjustments were needed, etc. Not to mention, Unity keeps adding features, then stops supporting them and takes them away. I suppose if you are making a REALLY simply game Unity might work pretty well, but once things start getting complicated with large levels, open worlds, need for tons of polygons, Unity slows to a crawl. Just because the engine will load on a low-end laptop better than Unreal means nothing - once you actually start building out the game, either engine will start to bog down on a such a system.
@uncleg1214
@uncleg1214 Год назад
@@landonp629 I am not saying indie games are prevented from having higher polycount art styles. I am saying that the higher the polycount budget the more expensive it is on your resources. It is no secret that higher polycount games require high end computers. with Tripple A titles claiming up to a minimum of 35 gigabytes of your storage just looking at it makes sense to consider poly count in the budget too. While nanite effectively loads higher poly meshes with no LOD it is still a high poly mesh with dense poly count sitting in your machine , requiring resources for you to manage it. Chances are you have no choice but to buy high end computer tech make bigger investments to your project if your project has a high poly budget.
