1000 Subs Special!
For my 1000 subs celebration I thought I would address a question that I'm sure many of you will find interesting - is Vintage Hi-Fi Better?
Watch the video to find out!
I just want to clarify my use of the terms vintage and used. These aren't hard and fast rules, but rather generalisation. I would generally say vintage means something at least 20-30 years old. But it depends. You might consider a 20 year old turntable vintage, but many 20 year old speakers perhaps not. Certainly, if you buy a 5 year old integrated amp on ebay, that's not vintage. That's used.
I want to personally thank each and every one of my subscribers. It has taken just over a year to get to this point. I still remember how excited I was when I got my very first subscriber (I hope you are still with me!!!!!)
HOWEVER, most people who watch my content are not subscribers. I really can't tell you how much of a difference it makes to a RU-vid channel to have people click that subscribe button! So if you think I have earned a subscribe, then please, SUBSCRIBE to my channel!
You can also support me at Patreon: patreon.com/audionautica
And you might like to check out my other channel ‪@watchout9213‬ which is about my watchmaking journey.

I prefer vintage

I don't know if it's better than modern stuff but it comes down to personal preference. Some prefer the sound of a vintage amp or receiver, myself included.

You would have to pay AUD 10,000 for a Yamaha A-S3200, which is about the closest you will get to my Sansui AU-X11. au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio_visual/hifi/a-s3200/index.html Oh, and thanks so much for commenting!

Thanks a lot! I got lucky to get an Pioneer PD93 (in US called Elite) and it is the best CD player ever I'd, even beats my 15k DAC on certain songs ;-)

And give some vintage cartridges a chance, my favorite is a Elac STS-344 but check out vintage Empires Shures Stanton's and Pickering's. You can get some very nice vintage cartridges and quality OEM or aftermarket styli for a good chunk less than you will pay for a new one

Yeh, I noticed the used cartridges seem to sell very quickly. I want to pick up a used deck at some point which will be the next step up from my Rega RP1. There's nothing wrong with my Rega, but it has the bottom end Ortofon cartridge, and I think it should be possible to do a much better deck / cartridge combo in the vintage world. I haven't put too much thought into what to look at as yet.

The times when you could get good quality for cheap are more than a decade gone at this point. Its more likely nearly two decades. In the early 2010th buisnesses took over the bulk of vintage sales and since then prices have risen mostly to ridiculous hights that make new stuff look priceworthy in comparison. That said one can still make a steal occasionaly,but its very rare meanwhile.

Well. I've found out that well serviced ( recapped, new belts etc. ) vintage components paired to new speakers via new power and interconnect cables are just about winning combination....to me that is
@audionautica6843
@audionautica6843 Год назад

You have to spend a lot of money on new gear to get the sound and build quality of even mid fi vintage gear ( serviced of course ) this is especially true with turntables. Vintage tables rarely break they just need attention. Would take my vintage Saba PE and Sonab turntables any day over a piece of particle board with a tiny motor and spindly little bearing

Vintage gear - all of it it doesn't matter - can be refreshed by a competent audio technician with modern internal components to sound better than new and perform that way for another thirty years. Good new gear is stupidly expensive, an audiofool and his money are soon parted indeed. Some vintage pieces are worth overhauling, some are not. All can be overhauled however. Do some research, find a great piece worth overhauling, and get it done. Saying 'most' vintage audio is junk is untrue. Just needs to be fixed that's all.

Yep. Problem is many people don't get it serviced, or they buy things because they "look cool".

@@audionautica6843 And I buy old vehicles and I work and restore them. I don't share your analogy at all.
@audionautica6843
@audionautica6843 Год назад
I've never bought a new car in my life. My first car was an absolute heap. I vowed I would never own another heap again. My second car was older than my first car, but it was a single owner ten year old Lexus ES300 that was in such excellent condition the Lexus dealership had it parked in the showroom next to the new cars. That is exactly what my analogy is about.

@@audionautica6843 Heap to you isn't a heap to someone that understands automobiles. That is my point. Same goes with audio equipment.

@@MrSticks9999 Good point! For people who don't, they need to have people like you! It's the same with hi-fi.
