Spoiler alert - Yes it is! Today Chris talks about some pinball history, Zen Pinball FX 3, Visual Pinball X. He demos Space Cadet, a virtual pinball table for Windows 95, 98 and XP from the 90's. Also, Sorcerer's Lair, Williams Fish Tales and Family Guy from PBFX3 and Stranger Things SE and Masters of the Universe VPX tables.

stumbled across your video, I have been looking into creating my own Virtual Pinball machine for some time now. I used to collect and Repair old Pinball machines, however they have become very expensive, and they take up a lot of space. I loved the idea of being able to have all the games on one machine.

Fantastic! I just thought about searching for Pinball Games and mind was like "I miss Space Cadet". So I looked for a Pinball game and boom Pinball FX3 was the first, I searched around for the videos and found yours. And there are more Pinball Games?! This is gonna be more fun!!!!

Thanks for the vid, Chris! I used to be devoted to real Pinball in my Teens, but after my spinal cord accident I couldn't operate the traditional machines. That left me with the computer simulations. It wasn't until I found and purchased 'Balls of Steel,' and played it on Windows '95', that a series of simulations gave me anything comparable to the real table and kept my interest. Plus they were far superior to their competition of that time. The downside was that I could never get the disk to run beyond the Win'95,' system. Nice to see the latest evolutions of Pinball Sims.

While I still enjoy the classic silverball and own 3 machines (Gottlieb Night Moves/Super Soccer/Allied Leisure Take Five). I really like the variety VP machines offer, and as a classic pinball restorer, I have to say the maintenance and off the shelf hardware is the best incentive due to ease and not having to hunt down antique parts. It is expensive at the onset due to the build and the computer and graphics, but believe me this is a hell of a lot better than searching and waiting for a pop bumper or solenoid or Target ramp to appear and wreck your wallet. And it is really not too difficult as prebuilt cabinets are appearing and all you need is a computer, monitor, and controls for a truly personal experience.

For those of you who want to look at virtual pinball's beginnings, consider looking back at Video Pinball for Atari 2600. It's blocky, but fun. The next step in virtual pinball evolution I encountered was on the Atari 8-bit computer. It was called Dave's Midnight Magic pinball. It is limited in the number of colors on the screen, but features a side-by-side presentation. Game play and sound effects were actually quite good. And then there is Pinball Construction Set, which was a good effort for the time.

Awesome job man. Given the tables in those games are fully modeled in 3d it must be at least technically possible to set up a Trackhat or something similar that tracks your head height/position/movement & somehow set up the game software to change the rendered angle of the table in real time to suit so as to create an illusion of depth below the glass. I feel that could be the ultimate simulated pinball experience

The first computer pinball for me was Cybergirl pinball by Epic. You can still download a copy and play, but it requires dosbox or a similar dos emulator to play. The graphics sucks at 480x640 but it is still a great game. Remember this was before windows at the beginning of the computer game development era. You should give if a try, I think you will be surprised at how well it plays even on new computer rigs.

@gustru2078
@gustru2078 5 лет назад
It was Cyborgirl :) You can mess around with your dosbox and add some pixel shaders that can make a huge difference. It makes it look less pixelated, especially in fullscreen if that's what you're looking for. Edit : The only problem with this game is if you take the time to go through the pain in the ass that is installing and setting up Gravis Ultrasound correctly with PPL161 *and* the percussion looping fix on DosBox, it consistently crashes the game after a short amount of time on Enigma(only) My favorite was the classic Android shareware table because my parents were too cheap to buy the rest of the game. It was the *old* Android table, not "Super Android" with that eye thingy and that sinkhole on the left side that could be accessed from the left flipper ramp. No music, only the exquisite and soothing sounds of the PC speaker ;) I often checked the other tables because you could look at them but not actually play them. I remember wanting to play Enigma so bad... The good times.... Back when my biggest worry in life was what kind of crap my parents would try to make me eat for dinner

My first-ever pinball sim was "Video Pinball" on the Atari 2600, a 1980 cartridge that actually didn't resemble real pinball all that closely, but was just fun enough that I played it a lot anyway. (There was a much better pinball sim for the Atari 2600, a port of the personal-computer game David's Midnight Magic--it didn't have the Black Knight-derived playfield, but it was actually a credible pinball simulation. But I didn't discover that until many years later with a 2600 emulator.) The game that really got me hankering for it again was Amtex Software's 1994 simulation of the Gottlieb electromechanical table Royal Flush. This was published by Brøderbund for Windows, but there was also a Macintosh port that was cancelled as a commercial product but was released later as abandonware. I remember playing that a lot--unfortunately it doesn't play on modern Macs at all.

We're in kind of a strange place when it comes to emulation of the classic Williams/Bally tables from the 1980s and '90s, because Farsight Software's "The Pinball Arcade" used to carry a huge number of these, but Farsight recently lost the Williams/Bally license and Zen snapped it up. So we're seeing Zen's new emulations of these tables we used to have on Farsight's game trickling out again. To their credit, Zen makes way slicker and less buggy software than Farsight ever did, so it's a higher-quality product. But I wonder if Zen is ever going to move heaven and earth to get the IP rights for some of the old tables with media licenses, like Twilight Zone, Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Addams Family, or Doctor Who (Farsight spent literally years hammering away at this). I kind of doubt it... they do media tie-ins but it's all their original creations.

Dollars. I thought this would be a good starting point if I should decide to build my own like you in the future. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Roger K

To be honest with you, the guys that pre-load tables are making money of the work of the table authors and that is highly frowned upon in the community. Add this to the fact that if a table does not work properly, you will have no idea what to do to fix it. There are some good guys out there however. You can get a pre-built machine that has no tables loaded. you can go to the FAQ at Pinball Junkies on FB and have all the resources you will need to get your favorite tables up and running in no time. Then you will have a good base of knowledge to work from. Check out the Junkies page and they have a list of trusted vendors. Good luck and enjoy this hobby! It's quite rewarding and you will meet some great people along the way!

Not personally, but it looks cool. Most of that tech relies on the old kinect and it's hard to come by and our setup does not support it. It would be a pretty expensive undertaking.

Theatre of Magic just came out in Zen's latest table pack, along with The Champion Pub and Safecracker.
@MattMcIrvin
@MattMcIrvin 5 лет назад
...And I can report that it seems pretty accurate. All of Zen's pinballs have a "Zen" mode in which you can play with earned power-ups that affect scoring, timers or the passage of time itself, and a "classic" mode without that stuff. For the Williams tables, which are based on real machines, the classic mode also swaps in a different physics model intended to be more realistic. Zen's ToM feels very right to me in the classic mode, and the other mode is also fun. The Zen mode also defaults to including flashy visual enhancements, like flaming balls and animated characters standing on the table, but for the Williams packs they are optional--in either mode you can turn those on or off during gameplay. (Theatre of Magic *had* been one of the original launch titles for Farsight's "The Pinball Arcade", and you could play it there for years--but their loss of the Williams license means you can't buy it there any more, I guess.)

@@MattMcIrvin Thanks for all of this info. I make custom Arcade Cabinets, and although I have a huge Videogame collection, I have always been more fascinated with the tactile feel of manipulating a real ball and the physics of the table that Pinball gives. I really like the table designs of John Popadiuk and Pat Lawlor, and *Theatre of Magic* to me, was (pardon the pun) really quite magical in the experience it gave and enjoyment of accomplishing all the table had to offer. So, I really want to venture out and try making these Virtual Pinball machines, because they are looking really good and seem to give almost the same experience with their HD graphics and realistic ball physics, and some even have tactile vibration and physical 'tilt' interaction. And I'm grateful for all those who have built these machines before me and have uploaded videos on how to make these tables, so someone like me won't be too confused when I begin to tackle a project like this. So where do I start? I have the talent to make the physical cabinets no problem, but I don't know where to find the Pinball programs or where to download specific ROMs, and what are the good games out there for the money. I see you mention *Zen* and *Farsight,* but do you have available links to trusted sites for anything you'd recommend? Thanks again for all the info you provide. I'm sure it helps a lot more people than just me that are trying to get into this Virtual Pinball cab making. Here's a video of my custom Arcade Cabinets that you might appreciate-- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sBCYo9Kn1B0.html

I loved playing pinball growing up because it was an experience unlike any other game I played, keep in mind we had the N64 at the time. I was always happy to spend up to $20 on a fun and flashy one at the arcade. Then they replaced it with "Virtual Pinball" . . . . . o_O And I hated it. I missed the feeling of the flippers banging and things physically being hit. Any time I made the ball jump I felt like I was just that strong that the game could not handle my awesomeness lol. I could walk in mad about something and walk out feeling better after smashing the ball around for a bit. Now I tried to give the VPB a good run but its just not my jelly and im not sure how people can even call it Pinball.

I think you forgot to talk about ball physics. Because the most important thing about a virtual pinball machine is not only how good the graphics are, or how great the mini-games or sound effects are. So at least for me, ball physics is the most important thing. For what good is it if the ball does not do what you're trying to do? But otherwise a great video, keep it up.
@angelorusso3219
@angelorusso3219 5 лет назад
Ball physics has been important from the beginning in the Visual Pinball program. Randy Davis created a great piece of software. The physics are at least 95% accurate, and I may be low on that number. The created table in VP has a lot to do with it as well. If the flippers aren't set to the right power/height/speed or the ramps and other playfield items aren't laid out properly, the recreation will not feel like it's playing well. There were some bugs (ball going through the flippers now and then), but they've worked out those bugs over the last 18+ years! You don't need a cabinet to play these games. Download VP, PinMAME, a few tables and their ROMs for PinMAME, and just play it on 1 screen (it will look like the PinFX3 table layout in this video). You don't have to invest anything to try it other than a little time setting up the software. After that, I think you'll be hooked and want more. In a cabinet, there are many real-world enhancements you can build/buy/add to it to make it feel more real - flashers, contactors that will thump the cabinet when you hit the bumper jets or flippers, spinners and shakers that will rumble the game (think Earthshaker), I have a light on the top of mine that flashes when certain things happen, especially in Getaway: HS2 when the chase scene activates the police light. You have to think, spend $3k-$10k for 1 real pinball machine, or $1k (basic) to $4k (extreme bells and whistles) for over 800 fully playable, faithfully recreated pinball tables in one virtual cabinet!

The true video pinball games that started it all, Epic megagames (makers of UNREAL) did epic pinball and extreme pinball for DOS in 1993 and 1995. Featuring fully realized sound tracks (using MOD music, a form of midi music but the digital instruments are also provided with the music), 3d rendered tables, and 3d rendered animations for both the board assets and the dot matrix display, more than what you saw on modern pinball tables at the time. No high resolutions at this time but otherwise it was awesome.

Whelp it was this video that initially put me on my journey. I have been working round the clock every chance I get to get it all going for about a year now. I have slowly been ordering parts for a super high end cab with toys and the works. About another year or so and I will be completely done. My cab will have Mame Pinball fx Comics Android games (vertical) Pc games (vertical) Visual pinball Visual pinball 10 Future pinball Video game magazines And more!!! All with individual backglass, dmd, wheel name, topper videos, table videos and table audio mostly made by me. There is so much work I am doing it might shock you. I worked out batch files and scripts using pinball x launch before and after lines to get some of this stuff to work.. I link you the final video👍🏽 when all is said and done. @@independentmind1977 its going really ridiculously long.. I have too much to do and it will take another year or two to finish the software portion alone. I have a very ambitious build coming up but I will release all my custom work that I made to the community. If I were u go big and slowly order parts one at a time.. Look at "mame in a box' channel and study hard.. Go 4k and invest 500-800 dollars in the gpu alone. Buy a cheap but somewhat strong pc as a way to get it all going then transfer it all to your main pc you will use. I am using about 10 different editing software including: sony vegas pro, wondershare filmora and many others.. I am using about 20+ different programs to get it all going for various purposes. If you need help with anything ask me I am getting better each week. Plus there are so many forums to help u. I will be making a video soon to show my progress. Whatever u do make a video showing off your finale build or better yet your build process to motivate others. Good luck on your cab! I wanna see it in all its glory.

It requires a specific (and older) emulator called BAM and a Microsoft Kinect. It kind of died off as it has issues when there are more than one person around the pinball table. Here is a video on that tech from 2013... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-89AnFISP7k4.html

As far as I can tell, their Classic arcade physics is good and the nice thing is that they are constantly working on it i.e. the volume 4 tables came with new flipper physics (which they will implement in the previous tables as well).

We've had good results on the videos we've promoted with them. But like anything else, if the content is not good, the results won't be either. Sprizzy is a tool for promotion that gets eyes on your content. So, if you have content that is interesting to your audience, they will hang around for what you do next, if not... they will go elsewhere.
