I am totally against vocal fry.It sounds awful. When I use it, it’s because I’m tired and I’ve stopped focusing on my range.

Yep... if I'm tired or haven't gotten enough sleep. It's so annoying.

I can't stand when youtubers do it and I have to mute and use subtitles.

I have yet to figure out which is the worse: vocal fry, uptalk, knuckle cracking, loud sniffling, loud farting, loud throat clearing, chewing with mouth open ...

It's not just irritating to many people, it's also very bad for your voice.

I find vocal fry to be more and more irritating. I've been a loyal weekly listener to a certain podcast since 2005, NEVER skipped an episode, but now if a guest panelist does vocal fry at the end of every sentence, I bail. It's a fad. It's an affectation. Yuck.

Vocal fry predates the Kardashians by at least 30 years as a stylized voice choice (think Valley Girl by Moonunit Zappa.) Note I said “choice.” While it’s use can easily become one’s default mode of speaking, it absolutely begins as a deliberate affection. The example of a Movie trailer voice as typical vocal fry used in this video is very misleading. Yes, it is a deliberate use of the lower register to elicit a raspy effect, the vocal fry affectation as cultural cache is very different. The first is alluring and compelling, while the latter is irritating in the way a teen sounds trying to be cool and blasé by saying the word ‘like’ every third word, but simply sounds condescending and entitled. If a character calls for this tone, then it’s a great voice choice. But absolutely make every effort to avoid internalizing this mode of expression into your modal tone.

I've been a VO artist for 3 years now. . .on most platforms this is ALL that the clients want. It's very frustrating:-(

Aside from the occasional and deliberate use of vocal fry by professional announcers (as in the movie-trailer example) I hear it most often in the speech of adolescent girls and young adult women ...however (howeverrrrrrrr?) it seems to be spreading like an infectious disease.

I was watching a video about a really interesting topic, but had to close it because the guy can't speak more than 2 seconds without the vocal fry. It's just annoying.

Is vocal fry the same as uptalk?
@voices
@voices 2 года назад
They are not the same thing but they do get paired together! Vocal fry is more on the voice drop and creaky sound, while the uptalk is the rising-pitch intonation at the end of sentences, which can sound like asking a question. Hope this helps -Gio

As an older person (over 30) who does not use vocal fry along with the dragged out, raspy final "R", up-speak, or other current adolescent affectations, I hear a lot of vocal fry slipped in the speaker's presentation. It sounds affected and juvenile. I suppose it can work well enough for a RU-vid audience, but not so well in anything more serious. Am I alone? Does this only annoy ancient adults... or do some of you in your teens and twenties also cringe when you hear this? Please comment soon before I dry up and die.

I'm a VERY young 44 and I can't stand it... especially as I remember all too clearly a time when it didn't exist in young people, and that time was not too long ago. Yet it swept the world in a matter of less than a decade, and now I even hear people in Russia speaking with it. My hope for humanity is drying up.
