She’s offended because she appreciate the black woman who had to fight to stay alive to birth us during slavery, and pass down the cultural of braiding hairstyle to black woman globally. As for the wearing of Western European clothes, they forced that on everybody else, but as black women, we need to take pride in our image. Plus blonde hair is DNA not culture culture is created. These women fight to sing like us dance like us act like us, like enough is enough. why aren’t white women fighting other groups of women for their cultural things and why is it always black women things they want? Mary’s not supposed to be white because she burnt a woolly hair baby, which only black women harry’s woolly on the planet and now Beyonce even sing country music freely. I want black women to take pride in our image that our ancestor/black woman left to us.

Nordic people(white people) were wearing braids thousands of years ago. Of course they didnt have time to complain about culture appropriation back then because they had better things to do and to worry about such as be vikings. so the argument about braids being culture appropriation is ridiculous. Anyone who claims something is cultural appropriation is a clown

Can we all just appreciate that what we borrow from each other should be taken only as a sign of beauty and admiration and not as hiding who we are as individuals. There is only one race. Be your own best and if you rock blonde hair then you rock the shit out of it. If you want black hair with perfect edges then you go and do you.. be your own beautiful perfect to you. Loving this as im a white girl sitting here with maroon box braids thay I did myself. Took me 4 days but they be nice and make me feel pretty while I try to get my curl pattern back and get my scalp happier. The first time I got braids was a to the scalp braid that a fellow dancer put in my hair the second was a African girl at the club. Her sister did a set of box braids on me. With how much it helps my hair I do it once a year now. I think if we are going to be a multicultural nation that makes one culture that literally means all cultures coming together as one culture lol. I've never quite understood this but I even questioned myself when my hair got all braided up pretty. I know girls that were close to me that had a hard time getting jobs because they had braids and they've had guys at the club turn them down to pay them money for their services because of their braids as well. Which is a little ridiculous to me but I understand the pain that y'all be going through because of your culture. It's not right in any culture but at the end of the day if me wearing braids allows for my fellow girls to wear them more comfortably than a ill Sport them no problem. They are just braids
@Summer_Sunset15
@Summer_Sunset15 4 месяца назад
Respectfully, as a black woman, I do not wanna look like you. I want to wear my braid, and remember the strong black woman who had to steal alive in slavery in order to pass it down to black woman like me, and other black women. I don’t see white women stealing any other groups of women things white always black women, and this is our identity globally. Black woman in America had to fight to pass a crowned act just so they can wear their own hair and their cultural hairstyle, but white women are supposed to be kind, but not kind enough to understand that. Braided hairstyle is wrapped in black woman’s struggles from slavery to now, and I don’t want my oppressor like me. We’re not there we’re sharing is caring because we’re not sharing things equally and you know it. And just so you know blue eye and blonde hair is genetics DNA and braided hairstyle all of it came from black women.

Wigs were a European thing so I guess fake hair is cultural appropriation. I'm all for doing you and embrace/celebrate whatever culture you want.
@tylersmith3139
@tylersmith3139 4 месяца назад
The ancient Egyptians ironically created wigs. Also, stupid comparison. Black Americans were forced into wearing wigs to avoid constant harassment and racial attacks on their hair by White Americans. Until a few years ago when they were called out for it, largely White job sectors would only hire Black American women wearing wigs and call those who wore braids "unprofessional and ghetto" and that's the root of the problem. Cultural appreciation is not double standard. You can't hate on Black people for wearing our natural hairstyles, then praise yourselves for copying those same hairstyles and then you wonder why Black people call it out. That's exploitation, you crap on the people while taking everything you can from. How is it any different from all the White Southerners who would the Banjo and White Northerners who would listen to swing and jazz while continuing to make discriminatory laws against Black or how Latinos were second class citizens and seen as mongrels in the US even as American took their Vaquero(cowboy) ranch way of life and made it their own. That's not appreciating, that's being exploitative. You don't like the people and they practice their culture, you hate said culture, but you like that every once in a while, you can try a new trend and then dump. You can't eat at that new Vietnamese restaurant one Sunday and then crap and your Vietnamese colleague for having "smelly food" the following Monday. You can listen to Afrobeat while calling Nigerians all poor scammers who traditional houses don't even have the right to be called houses, but mere "huts", implying that they're unfit to live in, simply because they're made from another material than what Westerners use, even if that material is just as good. Only liking something when your race does it is the definition of racism and expecting to applaud for being so openly double standard and biased is ridiculous. Not to mention how so many White pretended that they created those hairstyles as if they weren't used long before then as well treated the borrowing like a "bad girl phase"(Miley Cyrus) as if said culture that they borrowed is intrinsically bad and inferior. If you want non-White people to be ok with you borrowing from their culture, maybe stop crapping on said culture when they practice and treat others cultures with respect and not as flashy trends you use and throw away because you're bored. www.britannica.com/topic/wig#:~:text=The%20wearing%20of%20wigs%20dates,used%20artificial%20hairpieces%20at%20times.

Actually the ancient Egyptians made and wore wigs way before Europeans. That said, I don't care who wears braids or clothing as long as it's not meant to mock. My problem is when they say braids are unprofessional on black ppl but when others do it, it's not. It's elegant then. 🤦🏽‍♀️

@leahh.6277 I agree. Nobody owns culture. It's not a biological thing. We are not to be accredited or faulted for our ancestors. Egyptian were one of the first cultures along with many other cultures around the years before christ to enslave people, but it doesn't mean it's the fault of current Egyptians. Not to be picky, but most cultures from the beginning of history used animal hair for hairpieces, not just Egyptians. I am just saying this idea of people can't participate in is culture is stupid. Just like they can in religions. Nobody owns it, and we can't help where we were born.
@noahlomax1
@noahlomax1 3 месяца назад
@@freedom7458 If nobody owns culture, then why is there a definition for what's shared amongst a people that leads to "culture"? Why say no one owns a culture and then state Egyptian culture? Just because you don't have a culture or give yourself over to one, it doesn't mean that others do not just because you think it so. Black culture is synonymous with Black people, their hairstyles, beliefs, musical genres, AAVE and all other nuances made from our ancestors. It's ok for you to figure out where your culture starts.
@JondreaSmith

White women merely wearing braids is not cultural appropriation in and of itself. Cultural appropriation is when they adopt the style while actively upholding the system that ensures that Black people are shunned, ostracized and punished for wearing those same styles. The creator is either asking this question in bad faith or from a place lacking in historical context

@tylersmith3139
@tylersmith3139 4 месяца назад
Like the first girl said, there are different types of braids. I don't like how people just call every opinion they disagree with unreasonable. Sometimes you have to at least listen. She was talking about specifically African braiding styles. You don't see any one of European descent that needs cornrows to protect their hair. That was made to protect specifically hair of a certain texture and oil content in a special climate, primarily very hot and humid parts of Africa ( note, there are many different climates in Africa and dozens of different braiding styles to accommodate for this as well as fashion purposes) Besides, the main problem is not that it's cultural appropriation, it's not. Cultural appropriation is when you take something of cultural significance and trivialize it, like wearing a costume with a Plains Native American Chief's/ Elder's Headdress which takes a lot of time and effort to achieve and which few do. But it's not cultural appreciation because it's often double standard. You see a lot of hate towards Black women wearing braids with a lot of jobs refusing to hire Black women that didn't have wigs or permed hair because Black women wearing their natural hairstyles was "ghetto". Then the Kardashians/White celebrities start wearing Black hairstyles as a trend and worse, renaming and acting as if they created them. Miley Cyrus did the same thing to the point where people said she invented 'twerking'. Then when she got bored, she stops and calls it her "bad phase", implicitly calling said culture that she poorly emulated "bad". This isn't a new trend or exclusive to Black people. Whether it was the hate Jazz when most Jazz musicians weren't White(even though people still listened to it en masse) and how became "classy" when it was mostly White musicians in the industry, to the copying of the Vaquero/cowboy lifestyle from Latinos while making Latinos second class citizens with few rights to how in modern times, eating food from different East Asian countries is cool, but said East Asians are derided as eating "smelly food" when they eat their own cultural foods. Cultural appreciation is not double standard, when people only like something when their race does it and not when the source culture does it, that's just racism.

I am a white dude and I lack the personal experience seen as a requirement to talk on this, but cultural melt has invariably resulted in greater understanding and the breakdown of divides between cultures. Showing a hanbok is funny. Clothing is another ball park. There's a difference between wearing the clothes and mocking the culture. With Japan and Korea, I see people, mostly older people, get really happy when foreigners properly wear their traditional clothing. Native Americans are different, I'm not sure how they feel if someone wear their traditional clothes properly. But wouldn't surprise me if they didn't like it, considering how small the population is from genocide.

Just do it right and wear a braid style that looks good on you individually. I have seen some very repulsive looking put together braids done on non blaq women that made me say " is she all there and all right up stairs"? Some non blaq women wear braid styles that look beautiful on blaq women but don't look good on them or they don't get someone that knows what they are doing to braid their hair or they themselves try to braid their own hair in a style that they have seen elsewhere and it looks off and awkward on them. Yes blaq womem chemically straighten their hair as well as wear weaves and wigs that is not their own hair texture or natural hair color however blaq women on average at least they do it right and for the most part they try to wear a style that looks good on them. So I am not the one to say that yt women can not wear braids but if I keep seing these terrible looking hair don'ts or if I keep seeing them wearing styles that don't look good on them I am just going to keep in the back of my mind that yes they are in admiration of blaq beauty, let them have fun and enjoy it but that style of beauty is no suited for most and average of them.

no braids are not African or black, white people generally do have longer hair so what would you supposed they did with it , only ponytails buns and updo or wear it out, go look at historical pictures and you will see for yourself pictures of Europeans without African contact with braids. now corn rolls might be, because that's specific to black people but not braids in general like um the French braid. the Dutch braid the Viking braids the Greek braid its just a knots , and seaman can braid a boyscout can braid.

Every single braid belongs to black woman, but it was OK for us to let them have those. And yes it’s appropriation. It’s a culture that was past down by our ancestors and black American women are not the only one that wears it to just allow everybody to wear it. Next thing you know white woman have it in the movies song and they’re already saying they created because it’s Viking and then start telling black women we can’t wear it we’re gonna have to start fighting to wear it just like all black women in America had to pass a crown act to our cultural hairstyle freely. Maybe in the future but not now. As a black woman, I don’t wanna look like white woman I just wanna look like other black woman. Respectfully.
