Are you there BrainStuff? It’s me, Lauren. Do you ever think about how with wireless internet floating around us that we’re all just wading through gigabytes of HTML, mp3s, jpegs, first-person shooters, and entire videos… like this one?
Even if you don’t have a router and avoid the library and your local coffee shop, WiFi is everywhere. So your next question might be whether all that WiFi is safe or not.
First, the term “WiFi” just means “a wireless network,” not “wireless fidelity”. Common misconception. These wireless networks translate data into radio signals and then transmit and receive those signals via antennas.
So… WiFi is made of radio waves. These are part of the broad range of frequencies that make up the electromagnetic spectrum.
We know that some radiation on that spectrum -- like gamma rays, X-rays or high-frequency ultraviolet light -- can be dangerous. These waves are known as ionizing radiation. They’re so high in energy that they can break apart atoms and damage our DNA.
But the non-ionizing wavelengths are too low in energy to ionize atoms or molecules. Since radio waves (like WiFi) are non-ionising, they tend to be safe.
The intensity of a WiFi signal is rather low. WiFi is most often transmitted at a frequency of 2.4 gigahertz, about the same as most microwave ovens.
For comparison, a light bulb emits non-ionizing radiation up to 400 nanometers, which converts to 749,481 gigahertz. That makes light bulbs over 62,000 times stronger than WiFi.
Wireless network routers also broadcast further distances than microwave ovens, which is important, because every time you double the distance of a radio wave you only get a quarter of its energy.
That’s the “Inverse Square Law of Physics!” Which means WiFi’s intensity drops off sharply the further you get from a device emitting it.
Despite WiFi being broadcast at this safe frequency, there are some controversial health concerns associated with the radiation it emits.
And while there is no definitive link, the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) does recognize that some studies show preliminary connections between these types of radiation and human illness. They categorize it a Class 2B Carcinogen: Something possibly carcinogenic in humans at given exposures. But your actual wireless internet connection doesn’t seem to be harmful.
And if you’re still concerned… your other option is to wrap yourself up in aluminium foil to keep a few of these frequencies at bay. ...No, really. Aluminum foil creates a sort of Faraday cage, which disrupts electromagnetic signals.

For example I was reading that is safe to turn it off at night but if my cellphone, ps4, etc are not connected then my guess is that there is no radiation.. but some people turn it off because they believe that even when not connected this are still radiating a little? is this true?

The light bulb comparison might be confusing 'strength' with 'wave length'. Just because wifi has a smaller wave length than visible light, that doesn't mean it's safer. Strength is probably better equated to the wattage being output. Microwave ovens can cook things and wifi routers can't because the wattage is 1000-2000 times stronger. A light bulb might have 60+ times the wattage. But what concerns me is that light bulbs output visible light, which gets easily blocked. But microwave radiation (2.4ghz) can go right through your skull and into your brain. So I'm still not entirely sold on the safety of wifi routers, especially if you sit right next to one all day every day.
@WR3ND
@WR3ND 8 лет назад
Ever wonder about the power output from the radiation that your own body generates? Pretty sure your brain is killing itself right now as you read this. ;) In all honesty, the power output and subsequent heat potentially generated by the use of Wi-Fi is generally way too low to cause any harm. People can be afraid of what they don't understand. Sometimes that can be a good thing. Either way, it's still ignorant.
@WR3ND
@WR3ND 8 лет назад
Oh, also keep in mind that mobile phones these days are (among other things) wireless routers that sit right in your pocket and that you actually hold against your head. So if you're concerned about routers, mobile phones should terrify you.

Visible actually has a smaller wavelength, on the scale of nanometers. Microwaves have a wavelength of between 70cm to just a few milimeters, then you start getting into the infrared. Wavelength can determine "strength" as well. For example, lets say you have three lasers (red (650nm), green (532nm), and violet (405nm)) that output ~5mW. You have a glow in the dark fidget spinner, or anything that glows in the dark. You shine your red and green laser at it yet it doesn't glow afterwards. However, you shine your violet laser at it and it glows very intensely. If you were to have a UV laser, even more so. The reason is that those violet and UV photons cary more energy (eV) than the larger wavelength light. Meaning that violet and UV photons are able to push the electrons in the glow in the dark material into an excited state. Here's a great video explaining what I just wrote: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lINbVp9fVU4.html

Finally, someone on RU-vid who understands what "radiation" is and knows the difference between ionizing radiation and WiFi. Another thing, folks: EMFs are in every atom of everything in the universe, including every cell of your body. Every atom contains electrons, which in turn, have an electrical current. Everywhere there is an electrical current, there is an electromagnetic field. By the way, holding that cell phone a few inches away from your mouth isn't any different than holding it against your ear, as the EMF from your phone is approximately 3 feet in diameter, thus, it envelopes your entire head, regardless of which position you hold it in.

Higher frequency does not equal stronger signal.
@WR3ND
@WR3ND 8 лет назад
It does mean higher bandwidth (data rate) potential though, so you can build in more redundancy and/or throughput, which in effect can have similar results to having a stronger signal. There are a lot of additional tricks that can be used to help in this regard too, such as frequency hopping and spread spectrum. Higher frequencies tend not to travel through walls and the like as well though, so there aren't always beneficial results when using them.

question does a wifi modem/router is emitting radiation even when you are not connected? For example I was reading that is safe to turn it off at night but if my cellphone, ps4, etc are not connected then my guess is that there is no radiation.. but some people turn it off because they believe that even when not connected this are still radiating a little? is this true?
@mmakshak
@mmakshak 3 года назад
@@miguelespejel2462 This is not an actual direct reply, but you've asked this question twice. I don't believe my WIFI was operating(no end user things, like cellphone, computer, etc. was on, I believe), and I put on Keshe pads to my WIFI device. It started to put out beneficial frequencies. You'll have to determine what that means. What it really means is to get Keshe pads(make your own from Keshe water), and start putting them on WIFI emitters(routers, etc.). You can remain in theory, or you can start to do actual things that work. Most of these theorists don't have a clue. Do your own experiments, and start getting somewhere.

On a serious note, *do not* use nor provide an insecure Wi-Fi network, unless you know exactly what you're doing and how to set up your router/access point accordingly. All major modern routers and their networks are vulnerable to attack and unauthorized access by default if they provide an open network to users, since they assume that the connecting devices are safe. @taibhsear71
@taibhsear71 8 лет назад
+Jeremy Cantrell Wow, you are truly stupid. A car doesn't even form a cage, let alone ground the electromagnetic discharge of a Faraday cage. I think the largest hole in a cage can be like 12mm, and most car windows (especially the windshield) are 100 times, or more, than that size.
@Leonelf0
@Leonelf0 8 лет назад
+taibhsear71 A faraday cage doesn't need to be grounded, it works because of the electric field canceling itself out inside the cage. Also, the size of the mash has to be dependent from the wave length of radiation coming through. A lightning strike will never pass through a car, cellular data will.
@taibhsear71
@taibhsear71 8 лет назад
+TheTrueM3ga My original comment stands, wow, you are also truly stupid. Let's just ignore that you are on the internet and could just look up the term: Far·a·day cage noun Physics noun: Faraday cage; plural noun: Faraday cages a grounded metal screen surrounding a piece of equipment to exclude electrostatic and electromagnetic influences. Then let's move on to your lightning theory. If lightning strikes you, it's because you are the easy path to ground (ie grounded). At which point your car would become a Faraday cage to some degree. The honest true is I'm not sure what would happen to people in a car struck by lightning, I'd have to research that, but my guess is that every living thing would be electrocuted and/or burned from the heat. Cage or not, if it can't withstand the power of the attack, it just melts. Then to finish, what makes a Faraday cage work is the fact that electromagnetic energy is being grounded, forming a bubble in the cage and protecting its contents. Without this field, it does nothing.
@Leonelf0
@Leonelf0 8 лет назад
***** Look up real definitions of "faraday cage". Or look at the shitty wikipedia article. A faraday cage is simply an "enclosure formed by conductive material". The thing protects you from electricity because the charge is evenly distributed at the whole surface, canceling out all electric fields. The grounding simply dissipates a charge, but even with a charge (non dissipated), it wont do anything because everywhere in the cage you'll have the same potential! Don't they teach physics in your country? Take a simple plane. It's a flying faraday cage. It isn't grounded (because it's flying.....). The only problem with unearthed cages is that if you try to leave it, you will most certainly discharge yourself at the ground (because you shared a charge w/ the cage).

@@nocompulsioninlove2148 These sensors need a little bit of time to 'settle down' after you power them up.
