Is Your EN-EL15 Battery Compatible With Your Nikon Z 8? Mine Isn't!

The Nikon Z 8 uses the EN-EL15c batteries, and is also compatible with the EN-EL15a and EN-EL15b batteries (although performance and functions will differ).
But oddly enough, the original EN-EL15 batteries before a certain date are not compatible with the Nikon Z 8. If you have a battery collection like I do, be sure to check your batteries to see if they are compatible with your Nikon Z 8.

ENEL 15 with the Lion 20 works in my Z8

Thank you very much for the video! Fwiw, my two EN-EL15s from 2014 work fine in the Z8. Cheers

Thanks Ed for letting everyone know! I guess my earlier version is just too old. They must have done something different between 2012 and 2014.

I did some further testing, it is the Li-ion01 variance of the EN-EL15 is incompatible. the Li-ion20 variance works fine.

This was also happened with D500. It was giving only 5-6 clicks per charge. But later Nikon gave firmware update to rectify this problem.

Thank you for this information. I own 3 EN-EL15 from my d750 & only one works in the Z8 the other 2 do not. Well, I'll see if there is a grip along with 2 more 15c in my future.

You’re welcome Gordon! It’s a little unfortunate but the 15c does have several advantages over the regular 15. They last much longer and you can even charge the batteries inside the camera if need be.

First of all...I really like your videos. Thank you. I have used Nikon DSLRs and Z cameras for many years, and so, like you, I have a collection of EN-EL15 batteries. When I saw this video, I had to laugh. I received my new Z8 a couple days ago, and today I put in an EN-EL15 battery. Sure enough, I got exactly the same results as you. I tried an EN-EL15a then an EN-EL15b. They worked. Just not the EN-EL15. No big deal, really. It's just that your video describing your experience was exactly my experience. Anyway, I really like my Z8. I also have a Z7. I recently sold back to B&H my beloved D850 along with some F-mount lenses. At any rate, I am very happy with my current Nikon gear. I can even still use the EN-EL batteries in my Z7. So that's good! (BTW, all the batteries I have are ones manufactured and distributed by Nikon...not third party.) Take care.

Glad to hear it, thanks very much! Yes, it's not too big of a deal since at the very least we can still use the batteries for the Z 7s.

I was shooting 2 wedding in a row with some dead batteries from the charged pile and thought I messed mixing the full and empty batteries. The last wedding I double check every battery in a camera to make sure they are full, and I pop it in the z8 and it still says empty. Lucky it’s a slow paced wedding and I always shoot with 2 bodies so I didn’t miss anything. So I dig deeper and found out the pre 2013 Li-ion01 version doesn’t work and post 2013 Li-ion20 version works fine. They look the same and fit the same. So annoying. They should have make some kind of pin (like the EN-EL3 so incompatible version don’t fit.

@@hellinvader It's essentially what happened to me! I was confused at first because I know I charged every single battery before my shoot, and then all of a sudden I had one not work at all.

Hmm this is odd... I have 8 EN-EL15 batteries, started collecting them ever since the D750 and D810 came out which I think was 2013? Then again when the D850 came out. I tried them all on the Z8 when I got it, and they all worked! They drain faster though. It's actually laughable how fast a Z8 drains them! yet they last forever in a DSLR. Another reason why you should NEVER sell a DSLR. Certainly not a D850, The last greatest DSLR Ever made!

Thank you for this as I was wondering if the 15b would work in a pitch once I purchase the Z8 since I have 6 for my D850. Though I upgraded my D850 to the 18 in the grip. Nice to know the 15b will be useful if needed.

A simple (but of recent tech) USB cable would seem like a passive device and never pose a challenge but actually there's "logic" (like a chip) in the connectors that can negotiate capabilities in speed, voltage and ampères. Batteries may have "battery management" (BMS) logic inside that communicates with a charging devices. You can imagine, devices on either end need to be able to communicate in the same language (AKA protocol) and the same version thereof. Such problems in the world of IT are as old as IT and have caused big problems in big corporations. Upgrade component A and you may need to work on B through Z too. And then, if you don't want to upgrade, say, F in that environment because that is an expensive paid upgrade, you end up in a "release squeeze". Which is, basically, what is going on here. Nikon is reasonably transparent about this. Third party brands are not and are a gamble where you do not know if you can trust their product type indication being 15, 15a, 15b, or 15c. They may have the proper mAh and V in there, they may have the proper BMS in there, but if the negotiation logic is wrong, it will not work properly in all cases. To me, it's not worth the hassle of 3rd party products. And I have been fortunate with used 15, 15a, 15b, and 15c to all work in my Nikon camera that prefers 15c, e.g. for in camera charging over USB.

So, I have six (6) third party BM Premium EN-EL15C batteries that worked fine with both my Z6 II and Z7 II. But, they do not currently work with my Z8. If I remember correctly, third party batteries didn't work with the Z6, Z7, Z6 II and Z7 II on their original firmware. I can't remember exactly which firmware update it was, but eventually, third party batteries started to work, like these from BM Premium. So, I hope that in the near future, these will also work in my Z8. They have the exact same specs for mAh, voltage and Whours, so there is no other reason that they can't work. I do have three (3) Nikon original EN-EL15C batteries, but I just hope that the other six aren't useless, now that I traded in my Z6 II and Z7II after getting my Z8.
@taku_kumabe
@taku_kumabe Год назад
Great points. I don't have experience with any third party batteries so I can't say anything for certain but it might be worth while to wait until that first firmware release since you can still use your 15c batteries in the interim.

It seems (from the issues of the older original EN-EL15 batteries and third party ones) that Nikon changed something in the Z8 that specific battery specs can now be the factor of it working or not. For me, 2 out of 3 of my older original EN-EL15 batteries don't work. However my 2 AYRST brand third party batteries work just fine. So it seems to be about how good the specific battery is and I'm not sure this can be remedied with firmware as it was probably necessary to get the sensor from the Z9 (that has a bigger battery with higher voltage) to work at all with a smaller en-el15c.
@eiko4252
@eiko4252 Год назад
I also tried this, and out of my 3 available En-EL15 batteries 2 did not work in the Z8. Original Nikon En-EL15 batteries that came with D800 and D750 cameras. Both show battery age as 0 (new) in D750 for example. While my AYRST brand third party batteries (and the EN-EL15b that came with my Z6) work as intended.

Just to let you know I got 2 qty EN-EL15C Watson brand to use in my Z8 even though it said they would work with the Z8 on the B&H website - well they did not work I got that screen saying this as soon as I placed the battery in without even turning it on ( this battery is unable to provide data to the camera & cannot be used. For safety, choose a battery designated for use in this camera.) So, for now, it looks to be propriety Nikon batteries only. I hope this helps others not to make the same mistake I did.
