Is it safe to store $100,000 of gold at your home? An email came in with this question, and there's just no way I'd ever be qualified to answer that question. Everyone has to decide for themselves. I can tell you some things to consider, though, that might help with securing your gold onsite.

About 40 years ago my father in law had a large amount of cash. He was partially disabled so had my daughter climb up into his attic and stash it. A couple of her cousins were present at the time. When he sent her up to retrieve it, it was gone. When more than one person knows something, it's no longer a secret.

The problem with loose lips is that they tend to belong to loved ones who don't have an appreciation for the risk associated with having a large cache at home. That's why I prefer a Depository. Yes, the amount they buy silver eagles for is less than what others are paying on eBay, but the peace of mind is priceless. And that brings to mind the fact that when the SHTF, getting any price online is liable to be a non issue. Of course, if that's the case, then you run the real risk of getting robbed on the way home from the Depository. Again, when the SHTF, getting ANYTHING shipped is liable to be a non starter (ie. Covid, when the whole world came to a stop). It's enough to keep someone needlessly worrying. Therefore, spreading it around at home and amongst different locations makes the most sense to me. JMHO

I have been robbed in the past. It was by someone who was in my house, and was jealous of my stuff. I have a home that is somewhat ordinary looking from the street, but it is nicely upgraded inside. It is filled with high-end art, furnishings, etc. Once this person was in my home, he learned of the nice things inside, and he decided it was worth the risk to steal it. It leaves a scar, to be a victim. It is very hard for me to want nice things in my home, as the envy from others puts honest people at risk. My point is this. $100,000 is very safe in your home if you do not tell anyone about it. Keep it out of sight. Do not advertise your wealth,. Oh, another thing, police can care less about helping a rich person reclaim their stolen items. The officer that I spoke with hated rich people, and said that anyone who can afford to own nice things, can afford to have them stolen.

Suggestion: By a used safe that is fairly difficult to open. Fill it with concrete so it weighs 200+ pounds and permanently seal the door shut. Great topic and great vid. Another way to think about this topic would be to put it in terms of time. When you purchase a safe, you are purchasing time. Therefore, if you can buy a nicer safe, or hide the safe, this equals more time. Anything that can be done to slow someone down gives you the benefit.

I had a friend of mine about 10 years ago that was murdered along with his wife and stepson the wife survived long enough to tell the police who did it. They were slashed to death left to bleed to death on the floor of their own home. It all started when Bill started bragging about the amount of gold coins that he had in a safe in his office. He owned a house moving company and his employees knew that he had a lot of gold in that safe. One evening about 9:00 one of his employees paid him a visit told him he needed to discuss something with him that was very important. Bill invited him into his office the man pulled a knife told Bill to open the safe bill did not open the safe he was stabbed to death multiple times, that's when his son come walking in and he was also stabbed multiple times Bill's wife was upstairs had no idea what was going on but heard a noise and went downstairs and they cut her pretty badly and left her to die. Turns out there were four of them that targeted there place. They took the entire safe and drove about 30 miles away to a remote location. The safe was found the next day but there was nothing in it. Bill's wife survived long enough in the hospital to give the police the names of all four a robbed and took their life. I consider her a hero she held on just long enough and now all four of those men their former employees have been locked up and will remain locked up for life. Very very sad story. None of this would have had to happen if Bill would have kept his gold in a safety deposit box or some other means that wouldn't be just sitting there. A safe that is visible is about the worst place you can keep anything valuable. The safe tells the thief exactly where the valuables are and some are willing to go to any length to get it. My dad always said keep your money in the bank. I know now that he was correct or at least keep it somewhere where it's not visible.

BTW: Be sure to protect you "SAFE" from fire by using a water buffer designed to boil off in the event of a fire. Water boils at 100 degrees C and anything inside of a safe protected by that fact of physics (including paper) should be fine. In many metal safes - this can be as simple as a 12-40 oz beverage can sized container of water with a wax plug sealing a small hole in the top of the can. When temperatures in the safe exceed the wax's melting point - the seal will disintegrate allowing the water to boil when it reaches 100C. The inside of the safe will remain at 100C as long as the can contains boiling water. In many fires - this will be long enough to protect the innards of the safe as the structure around it burns away. Paper kindles at 230 degrees C so keeping the safe at 100C by using boiling water as a "refrigerant" makes complete sense.

Thank you, this is valuable info! 👍🏻 Years ago, there was a pseudo documentary series called “It Takes A Thief” wherein 2 reformed burglars would scope a house, then get the homeowners’ permission to “break in” after the cameras had been set up to film the carnage. It was terrifying to see what pro thieves could grab in under 10 minutes. On another note, I am bemused at comments from gun owners who are determined to protect their safes. This plan only works if you live alone! 😱 If you have a spouse or child threatened by a thug with a gun or knife, you are gonna open that safe. Much to be considered here! I think your “layers” concept is on-point for best security.

Just ordered a TL-30x6 yesterday. Good rule of thumb for safes is how much you plan to store should dictate how much you spend. If you plan on 50k of "stuff" then you need to look at a proper safe that can be insured for that amount, check with your insurance to see what is required to meet their requirements for insurance. Spent 3 months shopping and researching but it is necessary to understand all the details of a proper safe. Of course don't tell anyone.

One of the things I learnt fairly early on was that buying coins is essentially collecting, and you like having your collections close to you because they are pretty, shiny and you want to play with them and cuddle, and lick... I prefer bars... They are plain, ugly... they are what they are, nothing more nothing less. They are cheap and there is absolutely no emotional attachment to them. You are then happy to keep the "investment" in a vault. I live in Australia and my preference is the Singapore Freeport. Away from government jurisdiction.

The only issue is access. You can only get in it when the bank allows you to. The claims that you cannot store gold or cash in safety deposit boxes is not true. There is no federal law banning that, though a bank can make rules on what you are allowed to store in their vault.

The dugout area underneath is 6x6x6 with another layer of concrete on the floor and timber walls. He stacks metal in sealed 5 gallon buckets. When the floor is in place and the mower, pressure washer, etc are in there it looks just like any other shed.

Good advice. I am more than average interested in safes and have done a lot of research into every aspect of what makes a safe safe. Sturdy ticks off most of the boxes of what a safe should be, at least if you are considering the price. If money is no option, look into Graffunder. A TL15 rating is also a good minimum level to be considered a true safe. Sturdy's are not TL-rated, but they would with no doubt pass the test if they tried. Sadly a lot of people are douped by boxstore "safes" with shiny paint and huge locking bolts, but in reality they only get a tin can with a strong looking door.

I appreciate the common-sense approach to security rather than the neanderthal, knuckle-dragging "I'd pump him full of lead" type testosterone comments from people who have likely never been on the barrel side of a firearm yet alone trained correctly to prepare for such a situation.

One day you may up and croak and your family has to go on an Easter egg hunt of the century to hopefully find it all 🙂 In my grandfathers case, he got too old to remember where everything was as we were moving them to downsize homes. I was finding $100’s in old boots headed for the dump and 10oz silver bars and rounds up in the attic. Like to think we got it all but I have a feeling the new owners have a few free gifts stashed in the walls of that house….

I simply can’t be sure the service will always be in control of the their own situation if things went south in their region. It’s a mental issue….for me. I realize things could go south in *my* region. But, being the basket case that I am, I prefer to go down with my own ship. I may even go down while they remain afloat.
