+Free Jazz When people question it they aren't talking about you having to carefully inspect the individual hair strands just to be able to tell you actually have curly hair , when they say " you have no curl pattern " it's because by just looking at the natural afro texture of the 4 typed hair it doesn't look like they have a curl pattern or any type of wave pattern AT ALL . If someone were to say to someone " hey, you see that girl with the curly hair over there " they wouldn't be talking about the girl with a type 4 Afro , if someone with a type 4 afro was the only person there at the time they turned around, the person that turned around would be wondering where the girl with curly hair was . If people can't tell you have curly hair when they simply look at you then your type 4 hair will be seen as different then curly hair even though it technically is a type of curly once you look realllllllllll close .

Gizelle Lancaster All hair growing from the scalp is "natural." Even if it is chemically treated, colored, etc. It is all natural. However if there is no physical alteration temporary/ or permanent (chemical) then it would be categorized as natural "virgin hair"

This is what I've been telling ppl!!! 😩 4c individuals have the curliest hair ever and that's why it's so tightly packed. And we definitely have a curl pattern or else our hair wouldn't be curly at all 🙄
@prettygirl45459
@prettygirl45459 7 лет назад
Right! There is a reason why we are on the opposite end of the spectrum. Type 1 hair individual strands are bone straight, no curl or wave no nothing. 4c individuals have the kinkiest curliest of curls. Which is the reason it inter links and twist onto on another (bc each individual strand is a tightly coiled curl next to other tightly coiled curls). No one will see 4c naturals real hair normally because they don’t want to deal with all that.

I feel like "hair typing" is stupid, it's just another way that black women can potentially discriminate against each other. Along with light-skinned vs. dark-skinned and skinny vs. thick, hair typing seems to separate us sometimes. Don't get me wrong "hair typing" definitely has it's benefits, for example, one 4c woman getting advice from another 4c women that she couldn't get from a 3c women because we all know what works for one hair type may not work for another. But I choose not to get all in to it.

I do think hair typing is stupid. It just perpetuates what we are claiming to free ourselves from...it seems like everyone wants to own the type 3 hair or try to get hair like it but ask silly questions like the one on this vlog when it comes to the type 4 hair.

***** Um. No. What I said wasn't rude. Exactly who was I being rude to? No one. I got around to watching this video because I was watching random natural hair videos and just clicked on this one. @shanicec2254

Any type of grouping or categorizing leaves room for people to discriminate which by the way is an immature and ignorant way to approach diversity. Honestly it's nothing wrong for grouping and categorizing in this way as long as you don't use someone's differences to be rude and discriminatory. Acknowledgement of different hair types allows women, especially black women to find the product that is just right for maintenance of their hair type because what works well for one hear of hair may not work well for the other. This type of separation into type you can also apply to skin like finding the right skin products based on how sensitive your skin is or the foundation that best matches your shade. This type of grouping starts off as innocent but only goes wrong when people get carried away with using people's differences to put others down and that is the REAL problem.

Here is my assessment. There are plenty of dark skinned women with A1 hair and they are typically in India. From looking at my own family members I have come to the conclusion that what you are mixed with determines the hair type. If you are first generation mixed, you will most likely have hair that represents both parents. It's the generations after that that are a toss up. Indians pass down more of their hair texture than whites or white Asians. My grandfather is Scandinavian, but you would never guess it from judging my sisters and I. My family members that have Indian ancestry tend to have more mixed looking hair. Most times we can't even pinpoint the family member, they just heard a rumor that their grandmother on one side and great grandmother on another side were Indian. It seems like the darker your skin, the stronger your genes.

loveyrae84 wrong!!! I do hair and there are so many dark girls with 3a hair. Look at Ethiopian they have many many dark and light skin.. The dark Ethiopian have 3abc hair. I should know. My daughter dad is Ethiopian and he has wavy 3a 2b hair. My daughter came out with 3b.. So no its not India...
@loveyrae84
@loveyrae84 9 лет назад
Donna Chesser I used Indians as an example because "I have Indian in my family" is a phrase many blacks have heard and probably made. On that note, the Indians in my family were most likely of Indian descent and not really born in India. Now on to your comment. If you read the last sentence in my comment, you will see where I pointed out my belief that the darker the person that passed on the straight hair trait, the stronger (and more likely that it will be passed on to future generations) the trait is. Ethiopia is across the way from Yemen. Yemen is a part of the Arabian Peninsula. Most people would agree that Arabs would definitely qualify as being on the dark end of the straight haired spectrum. World history would tell us that cultures in such close proximity are more likely to mix. Your example bolstered my point, not disproved it.

You use such respectful words when you talk about your hair (cotton, fluffy, coily)...nothing negative or anything that leans toward negative connotations - I love that! You get it, my dear. You're giving people words to use to help them start to describe and think more cheerfully about hair that has more texture and curl. RU-vid - heck the whole doggone world - needs more of that. Change perceptions, change reality. You are leading the revolution. Carry on little sister!!

OMG! I made the mistake and washed my hair in loose twists which came undone in the shower. Needless to say my hair was an entangled mess that took 3 days to detangle. My hair is pretty long and I was shocked to have seen it shrivel to less than an inch. Please 4C ladies, DO NOT WASH YOUR HAIR WITHOUT IT BEING BRAIDED OR IN PROPER TWISTS!! The longer your 4C hair is (or becomes) the worse the tangles are when it reverts back. Keep your hair stretched and in a protective style LIFE SAVERS!!

MY POINT EXACTLY.....little tidbits that are need to know for 4cNauralists! I just watched a 4aNaturalist (because she said she was 4c but I later realized she was mistaken and she wasn't, lol), and she has hair down her back that she just parts in small sections and washes it straight out. It came out looking great and she detangled and styled after.....But now I know to never do that with mine. See, this is one of the ways that type DOES matter.
@RockyRoadRowe
@RockyRoadRowe 10 лет назад
Candice Morse very important to know. 4C hair is high maintenance when washing. I must repeat myself ***4C HAIR MUST BE WASHED WHEN IN BRAIDS/TWISTS*** Now I know some people must be thinking "that's just dirty, how is your hair gonna be clean"?!? Ladies, just find a way to wash your hair and accept that small differences require different techniques.

I never knew to wash my 4c hair while in braids or tight twists. My medium length hair tangles so badly that I just cut it off whenever it grows out to 5 or 6 inches. I will try twisting or braiding before washing from now on. Thanks for the tip. ☺

I ABSOLUTELY agree with you. I think the entire reason I kept going back to relaxers after going through the natural hair journey twice and getting my hair to shoulder length is because of the fact that as my hair grew, using products for 4a/4b hair didn't work for me. Every time that I even tried to approach the fact that my hair could be 4c hair I would stop myself because 4c hair "doesn't have a curl pattern" and my hair has extremely tightly coiled hair (very much like yours) so I couldn't possibly be 4c. I was so frustrated with my hair and my genetics for giving me impossible hair that I didn't even want to "waste my time" looking at 4c videos and even when I did watch 4c hair videos, it seemed like everyone kept their hair in a stretched out state so I couldn't see the tight curls. I felt like my hair just wasn't meant to be natural. I completely gave up on my hair and kept my hair out of sight and in weaves or box braids. I dreaded touching my hair because it was so dry and just touching it hurt so combing it was basically torture. On my moms side of the family, they have 4a hair and my mom couldn't teach me how to treat my hair. I had no luck on my dads side of he family either because #1 they perm their 4c hair and didn't have any tips for me other than to perm it. #2 Perming my hair didn't do me any good either because it would still be so dry and the moisture my hair craved for were only in thick butters which relaxed hair supposedly isn't supposed to be exposed to. I thought I was going to do what my father did and shave my head so I wouldn't have to deal with my hair. About a year and 2 months ago I decided to stop relaxers and go back to being natural because I look at past pictures and saw that my hair grew faster and looked cute in kinky twists. Until today I still battled with my hair and my hair is currently hiding under a curly weave. I say battled because I spent all day watching your videos and now see that my hair journey doesn't have to be so difficult. I'm about to blame hair typing for my struggles because I don't feel like blaming myself for the unnecessary pain I put myself throughout all because I didn't think my hair was 4c. Thanks so much

Hair porosity is how fast or slow your hair absorbs water or hair products. Your hair shaft has scales called cuticles if you have high porosity (like me )then you hair shaft cuticles are always raised with makes you prone to frizzy hair.If you have medium porosity then your hair falls in between. If you have low porosity then your hair shaft cuticles are closed tight and products usually sit on top of your hair and take extra effort for products to absorb in hair shaft.

Janice Fergus If you find yourself giving "just a compliment" to certain people it implies that you are distinguishing them from others in their peer group and that others lack that characteristic. So, its not just a compliment.

+akpo10This is what you're assuming, this person did not put "for a black woman" at the end of that sentence, everyone tends to pull out the race card for every situation. 'Our people' are always ridiculed and insulted, so when one of us get a compliment it only takes one person to assume or justify that a person is implying that someone is undermining our race. Can't even accept a compliment, if this person replied we could know for sure, but since this is the internet they might not. Here comes the shit storm...

I agree with you on keeping your hair stretched because of knots. Girl those single strand knots are real! And it is precisely the reason why I never wear an afro for more than a day. My hair stays in two strand twists, braids, weave, etc. I can't wait until it's ponytail length. You have a new subscriber.

There is def more than one type of 4c and I feel like I have it. I have straight up 4c at the crown of my head but weird 4c in the front. The front section "takes" better to any type of styling than the straight up 4c, yet they both will shrink up like nobody's business. The back is the same as the front, but it also has random patch of 4a.

Hey @RedPower, I'm in GA too. Yes the humidity has been a trip. Shedding is totally natural. Hair sheds from the scalp though so she hairs are long. If the hairs on your comb are short then it's probably breakage. Breakage cannot be 100% avoided though. We can minimize it, but it does still happen. Are you seeing a whole lot of small hairs?

When I had very long 4c hair, I only combed and detangled daily in a filtered shower. 4c hair loves water. I helps to train hair to shrink without knotting. I styled my hair shrunken wet with a long tooth pick. I was beautiful and the feel was fabulous. Also I did color with a black cherry rinse. I applied deep conditioner or Shea butter at night and African wrap with a scarf. Get a vaporizer for your bedroom in winter months. Love your beautiful hair and it will love you back.

I agree that hair typing is up to you what I don't agree with is people referring to their hair unstretched as an afro. I get where the root of the word comes from but my issue is that a person with straight hair doesn't have a special name for their hair in it's natural state. I hate that we adopt it as normal or correct. An afro is just another hair manipulation style not the way my hair grows out of my head. Hair regardless of texture is just hair. I know that wasn't the point of this video but I had to get that off my chest.

I love this explanation because when I first went natural I got a lot of negative comments about my hair not being cute or well kept because of my 4c type hair, I still get a lot of negative comments. but its from people who don't understand that there are different types of hair and from people who don't have my hair type. Im starting to not care as much or spit some knowledge to them about my hair because how will they know unless I tell hem. so thank you for this video and definition of our beautiful 4c hair.
@napturaleverly3200
@napturaleverly3200 9 лет назад
Alexis Graham same here. I think it's because most people think of loose curls as being natural and or better looking and don't think 4c hair should be in its natural state without heat or chemicals. I was discouraged at first too because I received negative comments even when going to the beauty supply store excited to find products I determined upon months of research before the BC would work for my 4c hair (shea butter, shea moisture) only to have the lady look at me in a negative way and suggest a texturizer. I asked her why would I be looking to put damaging chemicals back into my hair after just going natural and she didn't say anything.
@napturaleverly3200
@napturaleverly3200 9 лет назад
Alexis Graham It all comes down to educating people that there are many hair types even super kinky and coily ones like 4c that require more work and care but can look beautiful and grow to great lengths. I have to explain this to friends who ask why I don't wear my hair out often, don't rock a fro (I wear wigs with my hair in twists underneath so I can take care of it daily without manipulating it), wash my hair and go, ect. They think all natural hair is the same but it's not. Many don't understand that 4c hair can't be left as is if you're trying to be a loose natural because each strand curls and bends onto itself without stretching resulting in hair that looks like you have an inch or two of hair, or hair that will eventually loc without stretching and taking proper care of it to prevent it from taking on that style.

OMG....finally someone who REALLY has 4c hairlike me!!! I have watched seemingly dozens of videos over the past year, never to see someone with TRUE 4c hair, (although some have thought so). Like you said, it doesn't matter in the sense that one type is "better" than other, but it does matter when it comes to me seeing a more realistic view of products I should be using, tips, guidance, etc. I'm sorry if I seem rude because indeed all hair is beautiful, but unless you TRULY TRULY TRULY have 4c hair, you are NOT experiencing as real of a "struggle" as us who do. I feel so bad saying that because I don't mean to separate us sisters who are all on the natural journey together, because it isn't "easy" for any type, but I'm just trying to emphasize that with our 4c hair, as you were saying, it will shrivel up to a matted cotton-like ball if not kept somewhat stretched. Allowing it to shrink completely is almost an impossible option because it would take ALL DAY literally to detangle, and you'd probably get some damage in the process. As I am just now deciding to start this journey, I really needed to get tips and see the journey of someone who knows what I am REALLY going through. Many have said, "Girl, you can do it" while rocking naturally defined curl patterns. I'm thinking, yeah, if only you could see this stuff without the press-n-curl. Not to downplay the journey with anyone with type 3 hair, but I ABSOLUTELY would have NEVER got a perm or wore a lick of weave if I had type 3 hair. It's gorgeous and natural with little care. Its a little more easier to define your curl pattern. So when I see those types on youtube, I feel discouraged because I'm like, "my hair will NEVER be like that". Where is someone like me? I want to love my hair too, but how can I if I cant figure out how to care for it. I almost thought maybe true 4c hair couldn't be natural without getting mangled (yes mangled, not tangled---that's what us 4c'ers get). Even with 4a, it's not the same. All of them who say it absolutely doesn't matter are lying or they aren't really 4c. Naturalistas spend 80% of their time trying to define their curls, and 4c is the hardest to get to do so, so it DOES matter. I just watched a whole series of videos from a you-tuber who claimed to be 4c, only to find she was 4a with a defined curl pattern. (And I speak from experience, my daughter is 4a. Her hair is a bit easier to manage. I'm sorry, just being real.) I don't have that, so I can't watch you and expect to have that. I needed to see someone like me so I can truly see how to define MY curl pattern, how to stop MY matting, How to style MY lovely kinks....and now you're here so I know women like you really exist! I'll keep looking for more like you now that I know, but meanwhile, I may harass you for product information and tips, lol. Thank you for being real. Not too many REAL 4c'ers are taking this journey on you tube, and the ones I know in person are natural as far as relaxer-free, but they still keep their hair pressed AT ALL TIMES because they don't truly know how to manage their hair in it's most natural state either. Thank you for showing me that that the hot comb/flat iron/stove irons are not my only option as a 4c naturalist. You may not realize the impression you've made, but I was not going to be a believer until I saw it. I was 10 minutes away from saying F this.....Sorry for this long book of a message, but I had to vent. Hope I didn't offend anyone. If so, I apologize. But my detangling/styling/moisterizing/managing struggle is THAT REAL. Only 4cNaturals would understand. :)

You are so very honest good for you too as it shows confidence. Pretty lady too. I watched a video of my fellow African (through and through) showing her wet curls and typing her hair 4a or so. Being a natural I could very well see that not only was her hair full of product but that she had just taken out her twists and washed her hair. Before you 'type' your hair, you should have clean and combed hair. smh

aw, thank you. My favorite breathing style is a twisted updo. Detangle and wash your hair in twists. After you finish rinsing undo the twist and braid it up. Wear a wig two days so your hair can dry all the way and then then from there you can do a braided updo. Sounds like a lot of work but its actually about 2hours. 30 mins to braid and 90mins for the updo. I might have to do a video it's probably easier to show than type. Hope this helps though! :)

I not only have 4C thin hair, but the top layer of the hair follicle is genetically missing, making it very susceptible to breakage. It also grows very, very slow. It has taken 2 1/2 yrs for it to grow 3 inches.

+Kelley try using sulfate free shampoo so it doesn't strip your hair. I THINK moisturizing is key to fighting breakage and getting it to grow. I think you should find products that gives your hair the moisture it needs.. I don't see why it would be necessary to wash your hair twice a week when you need to retain moisture but do whatever works for your hair.. as a natural your probably you'll have to experiment until you find what works for you.
@HJKelley47
@HJKelley47 9 лет назад
+ALyric19 Currently I wash my hair about 2-3 times monthly. I add moisture and oil every night with twists, however, by late morning/early afternoon, it is already dry--soaks up oils--very porous. Monthly I trim the split ends. Of the oils that seem to work best is mango butter. Shea Moisture Yucca & Baobab Thickening Growth Milk for fine, thin hair also helps.
@ALyric19
@ALyric19 9 лет назад
Well if what your doing is working by all means continue! I'm not sure what hair type I have but it's only certain products that keep my hair moisturized so it will grow well. But I had to do a deep research on black hair to know what to do with it to keep it growing. I choose not to go by the curl chart method thing because it still doesn't determine what products work on certain hair. but yeah gir,l if it's workin go ahead!! but if not I recommend a deep research from a scientific point of view!

It can be an uphill battle at times. It doesn't help that media tends to rank 4c hair last on the scale of beauty. It's definitely a little more challenging to detangle than other hair types, but the good news is it is extremely versatile! There is so much you can do with it and once you get a hair routine going it's easier to manage. Hang in there it takes time but the hate will fade to love.

Hey Teca, personally I prefer to detangle before I wash. I wash my hair in twists now, but when my hair was twa I didn't bother, when it got to be about 3 inches I washed in braids because the twists unraveled, and now that it's longer I wash it in twists and use bobby pins on the ends. Hope this helps!
