I love how much effort you put into your hair experiments. It's so informative and helpful. ❤️ I used to think I was 4C, but it was perptually dry and high porosity after coloring last summer. Now that I take care of my hair, it went back to low porosity with a noticable curl pattern. I gave up trying to figure out my hair type. As long as it's healthy and growing, I'm happy with whatever I have.
Hey Olivia! That's such a healthy attitude to have. All of this information is just to help "guide" in the right direction. The end goal is exactly where you are now. Happy with healthy hair that's thriving. I love that!
I'm the same. I thought I was 4a/b with a little 3c and 4c to keep it interesting. After getting it properly moisturized, it looks like I'm 3a/b with a little 2c and 4c to keep it interesting. Now I'm just trying to figure out a way to keep it healthy with the least amount of effort, no matter the curl type.
I’m going to be honest...I HAD to view this one twice! Differentiating between Shine and Sheen & Cotton and Fuzz took me back to my Organic Chemistry classes...you get it the first time BUT you really GETZ it the second time you hear it✊🏾🤣
Im impressed that you did so much research, only just to fit it into less than 11 minutes! Your viewers and the algorithm will especially thank you for that! I have to take a day out and do this for myself and see my results. Job well done!
😳 This topic was such a challenge to research! The LOIS Hair Typing System isn't widely talked about and there aren't any visual aids and examples to look at. Most of the haircare forums that were around years ago are outdated and the data can no longer be accessed. So, of course, in true Toya fashion 🤓 I decided to nerd out and create a new and updated resource to help you out. I even have a PDF download for you to compare and test your own hair texture. I love what I do, and more importantly, I love helping you. 🥰 PDF: bit.ly/36u6dfr
What you described about texture is exactly why I don’t bother with the ‘rules’ of hair porosity anymore. Both descriptions were too extreme and my hair was always missing something on either side of the spectrum.
Girl, this was legit research, much appreciated 😊 I don't usually recommend other ytubers but if you check out Greenbeauty's channel ( she is natural 4c sista as well) she did a similar thing to you and broke down the differences on the systems and if they are helpful and also agrees that the LOIS and Andre system are incomplete own their own. But I really like your video b/c you really explained everything in an easy to digest way and provided clear examples, made much easier to see the differences.
THIS HELPED ME SO MUCH. I have never been able to find my hair type because it is more typical for type 3 hair to have 'o' curls whereas I have mostly, if not completely 's' curls. Also I would have never referred to my hair as silky because it has some frizz but now I know it can be silky and frizzy. Honestly, life saver! Thank you
Your porosity explanation was life changing. I always thought i had low porosity, but after watching this, I 100% do not. Water soaks through my hair very quickly!!! My hair is mostly medium to high. I def been buying the wrong product and following the wrong method of moisturizing 🤯🤯🤯. No wonder why my hair is ALWAYS dry after my hair completely dries. THANK YOU!!!
This video is informative and entertaining. On the Andre Walker system, I am a mix of 4A predominantly and 3C. With the LOIS system, I am definitely an O pattern with fine strands and silky textured.
Totally loved this! Love your energy and spirit. I've decided to just ignore typing and do what my hair appreciates. My hair hates coconut oil, gel and responds to simple water and a light leave in moisturizer. The back is curly, the top is wavy and wont curl, the sides are perfect coils and the very front is straight. I'm growing out a mohawk and hope to have a full on 70s fro by December.
this was a really cool video, i've never heard of the LOIS hair typing system and i think if i had this info at the start of my natural hair journey this would've been a great help. a few years in now and this is still very helpful
My hair has a mix of so many things😩. Silky, spongy, fine strands, course strands, high frizz, kind of low frizz in the back, medium- low porosity, ends are a higher porosity. It’s hard to tell what my hair type is so I gave up.
It’s sooooo refreshing to see a youtuber with my exact hair type! And not to mention all of your videos are so well put together! I love your channel. I love it here 🥺.
I have been asking RU-vidrs to do a video on cottony vs. spongy hair for months. Thank you for this!💕💖 I don't get consistent wash and goes because I have super thirsty hair and it's hard to get the right moisture balance that lasts for days.
Really?! I'm so happy I did this. I'm not gonna lie, it wasn't easy. I've literally heard professionals say they don't get it. The terminology is confusing and I couldn't find any guides with photo examples etc. I really hope this video gave you some clarity. I appreciate your thoughtful comment!
The amount of time and dedication you made into consolidating all the information out there on hair types, is obvious and greatly appreciated . I've found through my daughters hair that different part of their heads - like the front - have looser coils or waves then say the middle or back part. Also the length of their hair is a factor too. I've always thought they had 3C- 4B hair but definitely going to do a bit more testing with the guide that you made. New subscriber here 😏🤗.
i pray that you NEVER stop making videos 😩 your videos are so informative and your personality is so fun!! and your hair is beautiful ❤️ ty so much for the work you put into your content
Grest job as usual! Most important take away: No one, not even twins have the same hair type. The hair allover your head is your unique gift. Love it because it is your crown! Stay Golden Queen!
Love your energy, positive vibes and your hair! Thanks for the video. I have noticed that I had to switch up my products when my porosity changed. First time hearing about LOIS... I'm here for it!!!🙌🏾💓
What I learned: My hair's 4A/B with a patch of 3C in the back. My 4A hair is almost completely S shaped with the rare I or kinky straight strand, my 4B hair is O, S, or L depending on which part of my head it's from, and my 3C hair is S shaped too (sometimes it can almost confused it for 2A at some points). I'm torn between whether I have a cotton or spongy texture (learned somewhere that brown natural hair has a tendency to be drier and have less natural sheen than black or darker natural hair irregardless of how well moisturized it is, which for me is true, so it's hard to tell). Very little sheen or shine without oil both stretched and flat ironed. My hair strands are a mixture of course and fine. I have medium to high density (mostly medium).
I’m transitioning and I’ve been relaxing for about the last 10 or 11 years of my life, it’s been 6 months since I decided to put the chemical down and I’ve been really nervous about getting to know my natural hair, the only thing I know is that I’m 4c, low porosity so this will really help me, I’m soo so soooooo happy you did this, thank you!
Your videos are always very informative, love them. I think this system is more accurate than the Andre Walker. Thank you so much for sharing. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for this video the LOIS system is the missing piece that makes hair type less confusing. My hair seems to be the complete opposite of yours. I have s shaped, wiry, cotton hair. Your son's hair looks like my grandmothers texture and type, she had noticeable coils in her hair and it was very soft and fine. This is very interesting for the nerd in me🤓
this was super helpful, i’m trying to help me and my little sisters learn to properly take care of our hair and this certainly helped with figuring out how to type our hair! thank you!!
Thank you for this! I have seen this system everywhere but no one explains the different textures like spongy, wiry, etc. Appreciate the work you put into this video!
I swear I have every hair type I see 3b 3c in the back in the middle I see 4c rarely. 4b and 4a in the middle the front and side is damaged so I’ll never know 😭 I also have a LOT of frizz the back is kinda shiny in a little way I guess I guess when my hair starts growing I’ll find out
Well this did it! I’ve been watching you for about two weeks, but today I subscribed. The work you put into this video impressed me! Thank you for the content you presented!
oooooKKKKK...cotton, O, S pattern, high to low porosity, fine/thin...oh and greying...love your videos Ms Ebony, i like that you're a scientist about it...❤️❤️❤️❤️....i can tell my daughter she has L & S, spongy, med porosity, coarse/medium hair...she also has very little shrinkage and complains because there is no coiling. basically her natural hair looks like she's already stretched it, i dunno what happened, she was born with head full of curls...Oiy!
Absolutely love this, thanks for all the time, research and effort you put in for this video. It’s so hard to determine exactly which box you fit in. You are soooo right and I think it’s safe to say that you may have more than one characteristic and go with the most dominant! I’m 4 years natural and still have ?’s and trying to figure things out!😩🤦🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
wow that clip of you wetting your hair is possibly the best explanation for porosity i've ever had. i could never understand it, but i've never seen someone try and wet low porosity hair before. I have no idea what texture my hair is though; I seem to have a lot of shine, my hair absorbs water pretty okay (i can't just stand under the shower and expect that to work, I have to ruffle my hair for 30 seconds or so to get it the whole way through but it doesn't really struggle), and I have a lot of frizz. Sounds like silky, but my hair strands are really thick? It explicitly says fine strands, so what gives?
The temperature of the water makes a HUGE difference in how well it is absorbed. I am low porosity if the water is cold or room temperature. If the water is warm to hot then it absorbs.
Haha, i have l.o.s, fine hair, and spongey texture, my grandmother, who is a hairstylist, told me I have 3 different kinds of hair and 5 layers of it, so this helped know what the heck was going on up there!
I have found that the o and a pattern are the exact same. The s is a stretched out o pattern and whether or not the pattern is uniform throughout the strand changes depending on how it is prepared.
I keep seeing people with type 3c label themselves 4a or 4a/4b like naptual85. Like if you have to pick your hair to death to create an afro its not kinky coily its curly.
I try not to type others people hair via video, but I can say that sometimes video labels can be misleading. I think I’ve only heard Whitney say she has type 4 hair. I assumed 4a...but what do I know 🤷🏾♀️ lol
Naptual85 irritates me for that very reason. She's been doing hair videos for long enough to know she's not a type 4 which makes me conclude that she's deliberately misleading people for clicks. Type 4 hair gets more clicks.
Thanks for this. I think this may free some naturals from the stigmas and negativity that has arisen within the Andre Walker system. My hair has os and s’s and I think it’s probably medium sized strands with some frizz. I’m not sure about the texture though. It’s definitely not silky but I’m not sure if it’s cottony, spongy or what. It does kinda shine but I have trouble with the whole sheen/shine. I may have to get one of my daughters to help me out. I did enjoy the video though. Thanks again!
Great vid! I know I have mostly S with some O. My hair is medium porosity. My hair has high shine when its flat ironed professionally, and high sheen when it's curly with gels or pomades added. The sheen is low when its product free. Guess I have to study your chart to figure out my texture.
I love this video. I think that I’m a combo of mostly O with a few L’s & S’s . Wow I actually have fine strands, I always thought I had coarse hair. I’m probably thready because when I was relaxed that mess had to be rinsed fast, and whenever I got it colored it would take color and bleach well. I think I have a little bit of cottoney too. 😂 You are a trooper. Side note a while ago you did a video we’re you mentioned clip ins helped your hair. I just wanted to say that I finally bought some clip ins thanks to you. I like how one bundle looks but I’m definitely buying another bundle.
Heeeyy!! 👋🏾 This typing thing is so interesting, right? I love how you’re identifying your hair right away...Yes! Clip in are actually my favorite protective style outside of twists in a bun. I’ve only worked with one clip in company and I still have the clip ins. Great when I want to give my hair a break. I hope you enjoy them!
Yeah the waves that dominate the centerfront part of my hair have always baffled me. Like my hair is definitely 3c, it's not in the 2s, but those are waves and not spirals. This is helpful.
Hi, This was very helpful. From this video, I know my hair is an O . I have strands that look like both of the strands you showed. Now to figure out the rest. thanks
I LOVED this video! It helped me confirm that I do have cotton hair. Now I'm confused about my porosity because my hair absorbs water kinda quick but if I put too much water then it just sits on my hair 🤔 I do know my hair takes to products better when I have damp hair vs wet wet hair lmao. Idek if that makes any sense 🥴
Your videos boost my confidence because I have 4c hair and I relaxed it because I hated it. Now I want to go back natural because my hair is breaking. Can you give me some advice???
Best advice outside of general research for your hair type: Flood your social media with uplifting and beautiful images of people with your hair type. Like images with people that look like you and the algorithm will do the rest. I swear it helps. I’ve done it and my confidence sky rocketed. ❤️
OMG what curl pattern is your son's? It's JUST like mine! I just chopped off my locs and I have about 2 inches of natural hair and I have both frizz and tiny curls all through my hair. It's about 50/50! My strands are O and S!
