It sounds like cavitation, this is caused by a number situations in the world of hydraulics. 1) low pressure on the suction side. 2) Possible sharp 90 degree bends 3) Something simple like a dirty pre filter restricting flow on suction side. 4) A basic imbalance of water in and water out, can cause cavitation. My thoughts, clean the pre filter and KEEP IT!! Next, experiment with a "sweep" or gentle bend on your suction intake and see if this takes care of your "cavitation" issue. Try a more coarse pre filter. Yes, it is possible to have a slight suction side leak (air sucking in) and do not use Vaseline, I prefer "Lube Tube" small tube 1oz. Please use very small amount of lubricant on o-rings and gaskets. I hope this helps. Also, thank you for taking the time to make these videos, as you have helped me many times!! :-)

True, Vaseline is not good for 'O' ring seals and will damage them over time.

Oase did a facelift on biomaster. The prefilter pipe wasn’t drilled enough. The new pipe is drilled on every side and the holes are bigger. For them, it’s a way to reduce the noise. However some people still have the issue apparently. Might be better to have the lowest ppi foam?

I had two 850 thermals on my tank. Both had the same issue. I also had a couple of other issues with them so I sold them and I now have two Fluval 407s. Much less hassle and really happy so far with the Fluvals and no issues.

Yes I can confirm that by drilling the prefilter with double the amount of holes of the same diameter as original holes has silenced my filter. I done this to both of my biomaster thermals and total peace restored 🙂

Fantastic video, A RU-vidr who tells the truth, I purchased the same filter in January for my birthday, and had the exact same problems videoed it and spoke to their customer services they sent me a new connection for the hoses, but it did nothing I took the sponges out of the pre-filter still the same, ,taking sponges out of the pre-filter I can’t see why you’d have to modify the tube like Pond Guru did to sort this problem out ,I think Richard was addressing the problem with the flow, not the noise and the continuous microbubbles ,loved the idea with the heater and all the Trays but I had to send it back

Someone alreary mentioned Pondguru and how he optimized this filter by drilling more holes to the prefilter pipe (he actually replaced the original pipe with a new one, maybe you want to do the same so you don't lose the guarantee). Liquid Nature have also made a video about drilling more holes to the prefilter pipe ("Oase BioMaster Vorfilter Tuning"). I don't know if you can speak German, but there were many comments saying that they had done this also, and it should really help with the flowrate. Hopefully that will in turn also help with the noise problem/air bubbles.

@@itsokay7989 I am no expert either, but I would think that IF the air bubble problem is caused by some kind of pressure/underpressure issue, then this method is only going to help. Many people have done this modification and I haven't seen anyone saying that it would have caused problems (well one person said that he had priming problems after it, but was it because of this modification, because no one else had similar issues). But this is why it is best to not drill the original pipe, but use a new pipe (like Pondguru did), so if there would be any problems/side effects you can always go back to using the original pipe.

If you want to use the predictors again try this. Once your done cleaning the pre filter sponges and putting them back on (put the back on wet) or once they are back on dip into a bucket with tank water and squeeze them till they have most of the air gone. This should help

I would recommend you to use silicone for the gaskets, because vaseline (petroleum) destroys the gaskets with time (at the beginning it seems better but after one year it may break and leak).

I never had issues with my 350. Still havent in 3 years or so. But my 600 and 850 purged a lot of air all the time and than they where noisy. I had contact with Oase and they replaced the pumpheads of my filters. This helped with my 600. But i still had issues with the 850. Than i added clamps on all the tube connections and replaced the oase pipe set with Stainless steel ones without a skimmer. And than it was fixed. No air purging. So my guess is they suck air through the connections somewhere. Not sure where cause i did all of it at the same time. Cause of the Pond Guru video i allready made lots of extra holes in the tube of the pre-filter. No problems now.

You could use a bypass for splitting the Flow through the co2 reactor. this should reduce the backpressure while injecting the same amount of co2

I cut out 10ppi coarser foams for the prefilter to reduce them being clogged and reducing flow. Adding more holes is also a good idea.

Today I purchased a new filter Oase BioMaster 850 for 120*45*45 tank. Also i am using Shiruba XB-312, which is an excellent filter, I have been using it for 5 years. Till now there are no issues and sound is completely silent. After unboxing the new Oase BioMaster 850 filter, i saw the main problem, that there is no lubricant applied for seals, which is the main cause for sound and bubble issue. In shiruba all seals were lubricated but in this it's dry, which can cause further leaking, sound and short life of seals. So I applied vaseline for rubber sealings. Now it's working great with low noise.

@MJ Aquascaping you can drill more holes in the pre filter tube, then you can still use the pre filter because more holes allow more flow through it
@SklepKoszykarski
@SklepKoszykarski 2 года назад
Another solution is to keep the sponges, but drill more holes in the pre-filter tube. You can drill them in a straight line so that they cross each other. So You will have better flow even with sponges. I have Oase too, I raise my bubbles, at the end of the day, I stopped getting attention, but I saw this idea in one of the RU-vid stores and it wasn't long to do.

I’ve never had any big issues with any of my bio masters but I have had some noise from one. That was my own fault when doing a water change I messed up some how, but it has been fine since. I also think the flow situation could be because the flow stated by oase is the flow you get with only the supplied sponges inside, and because we obviously add other media to it, it slows the flow 🤔🤷🏽‍♂️ (Noise levels in my living mostly get drowned out by the air pump for the tanks that don’t have biomasters 😅)

You mentioned in your previous review video that the Pre-filter was the strongest advantage to the Oase Biomaster filter, so you have now lost this. I think if you changed your pre-filter sponges to coarse & drilled additional holes in the down pipe of the Pre-filter, things would improve for you. I run x2 Oase Bimaster Thermo 850s on my 400 litre Discus tank with minimal noise. Worth a try?

I have a biomaster 250 and only get a few burps after cleaning the system. After that I don’t get any at all. My prefilter sponges are the blue coarser ones, but even when they get really clogged up and I can see a significant lower flow I still don’t get any burping. Maybe it’s just because the pump is just weaker. I’m using coarse prefilter, inside I have red fine sponge followed by white fine filter (looks like cotton) 2 levels of seachem matrix and finally a layer of active carbon fabric.

Try a bypass for your co2 reactor and you will be able to manage the flow and get the maximum out of your filter. You can achieve high concentration of co2 even with low flow through the reactor.

I am using the 350er Version and didnt have any issues with it...until i redecorated my fishtank a few days ago and my fish had to take refuge in a smaller plastic container. Somehow i had those noise issues all the time...while using the same setup i had in my big shallow tank. So what did change? Yes i followed Pondgurus advice to drill more holes into the prefilter and got the more course sponges...but even then i had no issues with bubbles building up before that. I also used fine mesh intake covers cause of my shrimp so all this wasnt an issue... What had changed? My filter intake and out werent at a 90 degrees...they were tilted a little, the outflow leaning into the plastic tank and the intake leaning out in a 20-30 degrees. In my opinion...since now that my filter is back at my bigger shallow tank and the outflow and intake are properly adjusted again there are no more bubbles. So a tilted intake or outflow might cause the bubbly issues.

So, by this video you explained what i suspected with my own filters. Not Oase, other brand. I noticed that when the intake is clogged, the pump would create negative pressure inside the canister. Since it couldn't draw more water (restricted flow), it would suck air from the outside... Mystery solved. 😀

You should seriously consider using a bypass for the CO2 reactor. The manufacturerers of (large) CO2 reactors often recommend a maximum flow of 200-300 l/h going through the reactor to eliminate noise and maximize CO2 dissolution. But you will need a bypass to achieve this flow rate. The bypass will also increase the filter's output due to the reduction of pressure. Note: I have a BioMaster 600 (rated 1250 l/h), with additional holes on the pre-filter pipe, connected to a CO2 reactor and UVC using a bypass and I manage ~800 l/h of output without noise. So, if you are only getting 600 l/h with the larger BioMaster 850 you do have flow constrains in your system.

I have a bio master 600 on a 90p tank - I agree that the burping can be annoying, typically it will burp 6-10 times an evening. But I believe I get this from air entering the skimmer intake and more so after water changes - I knock the sides of the filter if it continues. On the other hand having the prefilter is great (especially if you have leaf debris floating up) and the flow is good (even a little strong) so I think it’s a worth while trade off.

I didn’t have burps as much as constant rattling with some small burps. Then I dismantled it, took out the impeller, rinsed it and put it back in and it was fine. People online seemed to say air can get trapped inside when you do water changes. My intake has a surface skimmer so maybe air got in through the top of it when the water level was low. Thank god that’s all it took to fix it lol. My tank is in my bedroom and the sound was so concerning. Nightmares of waking up with water flooded on my floor or something.

Hi MY I did comment when you initially reviewed this filter that having watched reviews on the Oase and the Aquael 2000 I opted for the latter. I commented on how quiet the filter was and having run it for 6 weeks now I am delighted with my choice. In general of is whisper quiet and you only hear the faintest him when there is absolutely no other sounds in the room, even the clock is louder. A 2000 litre per hour is theoretically much too big for my 125 litre tank but I have packed it with an array of filter media and still need to throttle the flow to stop it redistributing the substrate. I am confident that once the foreground plants grow a little more I Will be able to open the flow up more. Perhaps you could try one yourself and give us all a direct comparison and see if you agree with Pondguru?

There is one other thing to be mindful of when maximizing your filter's gallons/liters per minute and that is the intake and outlet hoses to/from the filter. If they haven't been cleaned in a while, it will significantly reduce the flow. I have one aquarium with a wer/dry filter, and if the hoses are not cleaned out, the flow is reduced enough that air bubbles will get trapping in the overflow siphon tube to the point of breaking the siphon entirely and stopping all filtration. Once the hoses are cleaned out and that fine layer of biofilm that builds up in all hoses over time is removed, everything runs exactly as it should. Another aquarium I have has a canister filter, lily pipes etc., and has similar problems with reduced flow if I don't take those hoses off and clean them once a month or so. I do not have a canister filter with a pre-filter option on it, but it might be worth a try to clean out the hoses, then put the pre-filter back in and see if that eliminates the "burping" issue.

If I restrict intake flow, filter starts sucking air through rubber seals, or if I restrict outake, filter leaks water through seals. Its four years old JBL greenline e902, anyway, rubber seals are weared out.

I recently bought a BioMaster 600.. I’m worried about it messing with my reactor, how do you release the trapped air?

Mine was making a lot of noise also. I switched out the blue 45 ppi pre filters that can with the filter and I now use 60 ppi pre filters. The flow has increased and the noise has stopped.

You can try to do what pound guru on Yt shows, he drilled more holes in the intake pipe in the prefilter

Hi maybe a bit late reaction. Everytime i open my biomaster i have this problem. You can easily fix it by just keep pumpin the auto fill up system😉

My biomaster 350 got silent once I isolated the outlet pipe. There was a vibration due to filter's pump that arrived to outlet pipe. I removed suckers, and outlet pipe lies in a foam that is used to isolate motor cars. Now the filter is absolutely silent. It seems you have another kind of problem. Try making bigger holes to the inlet pipe in the prefilter. Regards

Yeah my outflow pipe is noisy too. I have done something similar to get rid of an annoying humm.

It is a pity that those filters with such good materials of construction do not work correctly, in the end I refuse to choose Oase for these reasons, I love the pre filter and the internal heater, buuuuut ... A JBL for example, it is better if it does not have those functions. In addition, the power head is the same size for all models, an excessive way to lower production costs. Add to those options that you mention, all good, you can also widen the diameter of the prefilter tube with a small brico and 20mm pvc tube and many, many holes. Un saludo

I really wanted this one for the built in heater but I guess I'll deal with an in-line heater + a Fluval 207. Don't wanna deal with all this... bummer.

There is an other opportunity to update the filtration flow: modify the prefilter tube with a bigger one (20 mm of internal diameter) and drill extra holes on it. With More holes, with a bigger tube the filtration will works much more properly. What do you say about that?

Im late to this discussion but was just wondering if drilling extra holes into the prefilter internal tube would decrerase the trapped air noise?

I also watched a video review of the Oase Biomaster 850 by PondGuru and he did something very similar to what you suggested. I didn't hear him mention the air problem per se but he did say the tube was restrictive. He mentions it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ujIQ9Kb1fPo.html

Try to make the very small holes in the pipe of the pre-filter bigger and also add a lot more holes to it and use a coarse foam on the pre-filter. This should help the water get sucked in the rest of the filter a lot better and also it increses rge flow of the filter and with these improvements less air will be in the system.

In liquid nature vienna when i bought my biomaster 350 thermo, they told me that i should instantly drill bigger holes on the plastic stick/tube that is holding the prefilter sponges, to have more flow, and in order not to clean the prefilter so often. I havent even turned on this filter so i dont want to seem smart, has anyone got experience with this? (My Atman 800 filter which is like 2-3 times cheaper works pretty well and silent. But it doesnt have the prefilter which seems to be very good feature)

Hi, I bought the BioMaster Thermo 250 like 3 weeks ago, and without doing any modifications, by itself is really quiet on my bedroom. The bubble sound at the begining were normal for the new installation, but after a week, the noise settled down for good. I wonder if you are using different tubing sizes or any other add-ons for your filter, that may affect the performance somehow. I've seen those videos from Pondguru about how to PimpMyFilter, to increase the flow which at the end was not really 100% accurate after checking the flow rate. I believe that we need to clean the sponges on the Pre-filter more often than announced in order to keep a constant flow-rate, but also to avoid any impeller exhaustive force while there's some clogged sponges in order to keep the internal flow. Clean the O-rings for any debris you may have and add some silicone lubricant as was also recommended by GreenAqua instead of vaseline which contains chemicals that deteriorate rubber faster than silicone lubricants.

Yeah I think the problem that I have only happens to the larger biomasters 600 & 850. I haven't heard many people complaining about the smaller models

@@MJAquascaping Hi, did you checked for any plastic deformation on the filter cover or any other filter parts? It may create air leaks like you mentioned. Any hot surface where you have your filter inside the cabinet. I have some fans that runs inside my cabinet to prevent hot air condensation coming from the power strip and other electronical components I have on my setup. It won't hurt to 2ble check for this. Specially on thouse big and beautiful setups like yours.

What MJ said. My smaller Oase filters work fine, 100, 250, 350. The 850 sounds like it's drowning.
