Uber is fast becoming the go-to choice for convenient transportation in big cities, but its safety record has been questionable. It has no mandatory driver training, and we show how easy it is to become a driver and the impact that can have on customer safety. Uber maintains it is not a taxi service but simply an app that matches riders with drivers using computer algorithms.

i wish the fifth estate would complete this investigation and then share it with every mayor in canada, our mayor now is thinking of introducting these thugs into our community, first off the taxi drivers have many loops to go through to get a license, which makes me feel safer because of the testing and back ground checks and driving records, but uber has no recourse if the driver hurts you or kicks you out, and you prepay for the ride before you get to see your driver, and some of us don't like the looks of some of these drivers, proves to me anyone can drive a care and like they said preditors have a new tool to abuse and molest people now and can be mobile for victum after victum, this is a company that needs to go away because they don't promote safety when they hire any muslim as a driver, because they only follow the quron and sharia law and not the laws of the country they are working in

We're not discussing you, and whether you're a threat. We're discussing an Uber driver that was pushy, and that made the woman fearful. Once that door was open, he could have pushed his way into her home - remember the pushy part, the part where he wouldn't take no for an answer? The driver already lacks the ability to hear the word no and then act accordingly. Opening that door was dangerous.

@vivillager
@vivillager 5 лет назад
@12345grov , That woman's attitude is the product of the MeToo movement. I'm not angry at women, I'm angry that there are certain people who believe that men should be punished for working hard and becoming someone in life. An example of such, at least in the United States, was a nominee to the Supreme Court, who all but had to prove his innocence because his experience and track record was impeccable. As for venom, these women spew enough of it to go around.
@vivillager
@vivillager 5 лет назад
@Nathan H , my issue was with the woman "Hannah" in the video. Sure, there are numerous women who do dress provocatively, some who act in suggestive manners, but all of that is irrelevant because none of that makes it okay to treat them in the way that she claims she was treated by her driver. I've yet to meet any women who asked to be stalked. My issue is that she wanted a driver to lose his job without due process. I'm certain that someone here will raise the argument that due process is only for criminal courts and not for careers. And while I agree that the laws in this country do not regulate the handling and disciplinary actions of accusations in the workfield, it is in my opinion that people are entitled to an investigation (not necessarily a forensic investigation by the local CSI unit, can be internal) when accused of something that could result in their termination from the company. The women in the video got what she wanted, the driver fired after the investigation. But what she really wanted was for the driver to be fired just as a result of her one phone call, without the investigation. That is what I believe is the result of the MeToo movement, in that men should terminated from their jobs without confirmation of wrongdoing. I disagree with that mentality.

@cinnamongirl3121 The app on Uber shows the driver, the car an the licence of the car, a taxi river is a random person picking you up in a random car... that was never washed, mostly smells, you can see the trip on your mobile, soooo im not getting where you are trying to go with that, a taxi driver can be a guy that has a paint job and a fake taxi sign, and once youre inside everything can seem normal, but in the end he could be anyone, a huber driver you see his face, model of the car, car plates and e has to be registred in the app, so its not really a random person. In my country they are all nice people, and better and cheaper than taxi drivers.
@giballs23
@giballs23 6 лет назад
@cinnamongirl3121 so you dont fly either? Accidents can happen in any place, you can go on your car and some crazy person hit you and its over. You can go on your own car and get kidnapped by a random person, you rent cars that most the times are not even clean, and even if its you driving its a strangers car. The fact that you never take a bus, taxi, uber, train or subway does not mean youre safe by any means possible. Even more in the States. Life is a risk, even when youre at home with friends theres a 50/50 chance one of them could snap or be a crazy person and do something. As a female rider I would like to be able to request a female driver if I were traveling alone, but they cant only implement it for women. They'd have to implement it for everyone and unfortunately the other side- men requesting women- would be dangerous for the women. There could be women riders seeking out a male driver to harass or assault as well, just less likely than the reverse.

With all respect to the man who lost his life and those who loved him, this episode is very manipulative. Several of these clips were only partially played in order to portray Uber and it's drivers in a negative light. Personally, if I was the man shown yelling at his passenger to get out of his car, I would be looking into who I needed to talk to get this looked into. That was just wrong to portray the driver that way given what really happened.

Not really. The way that driver acted was out of line, no matter how annoying the passenger was. I saw the original clip of that ride and he was way out of line. You can also kill another person in another car. Total safety is an illusion. 30.000 people die in car crashes in United States every year. Of course some of them will be taxis/busses/uber passengers. I'm totally in for stricter training for ALL drivers. They are the ones that scare me, the careless drivers, not uber. Uber should have a better background check system but lets not overlook the fact that the traditional cab services have the same assault type issues compare and contrast the 2 industries cab companies are not all clean and pure I've worked for both the uber rating system encourages riders to comment about the ride or driver cab companies do not offer this low driver ratings lead to deactivation all assault is wrong period but ubers ratings system is better than the cab companies typical policy of call the dispatcher for an issue. Again research cab company complaints vs uber complaints and it will probably show an individual is statistically safer in an uber than in a cab.

If they cannot speak English, we've have a FEW that couldn't, not many at all, we ask them to pull over, i forgot my purse, one second! We go inside a building and then send Lyft a message to reimburse us. So far, NEVER had an issue.. Uber, did the same, HORRIBLE FIGHT!! People do the same though.. Hate, hate, hate, protest, protest, protest, they do Amazon and Walmart the same way. But because we don't have options that can hold these companies accountable, we're stuck.. That is not up to the level we would expect from the Fifth Estate. Taxi drivers also have sexually assaulted female clients. With Uber, you can track who the driver is unlike when you hail a cab. The accident that killed the gentleman on the highway is unfortunate. I've very often seen taxi drivers with poor driving skills. Maybe all drivers on the road should go through driving tests every few years. That episode is a total smear job against Uber.
@aplante
@aplante 6 лет назад
@Melinda Francis I've never been sexually assaulted but from what I know, you are generally in shock and you just want to flee. Your memory is not necessarily reliable and it's very likely that you won't think of taking note of the tag number. If the crime is reported to the police and charges are laid against the driver. The Uber "trace" is much more reliable in a court than someone who was in shock who tried to take note of a number on a car at night.

@Melinda Francis if you hail a cab on the street, nobody will know that you ever entered in that vehicle.

In the city where I live, each vehicle is distinct as the company just picked up some random cars from auction. But, there is no log as to who drove which car, when a driver shows up, he just hops in a car and goes, comes back with the car at the end of shift and that's it. Only time it gets logged is if the driver is in an accident or is cited, then it gets logged by the police.

I have 2 siblings who are Uber drivers they love their job they are both very respectful to their passengers. Both of them have had strange passengers but did their best to deal with them and get them safely to their destination. My sister has had more weirdos than my brother. I feel my sister is more vulnerable than my brother. Passengers can rate the drivers. Uber does care about passenger safety. This video must have been paid for by Yellow Cab.

Give them a break! 99% of Uber drivers hate Uber and do it only so they can pay their bills. 'Uber driver' is a synonym for unemployed. A typical Uber driver is also a much better driver than someone using their car a few times a week. When it comes to complaints Uber is useless to both riders and drivers.

If you don't want to drive yourself and all then well you are at the mercy of others.... Grow up and get your own blame car and you don't have to deal with the other morons driving. It would be real easy to make a account with someone elses info. People should join as drivers, pick people up and drop then off a few blocks down the road to make people hate uber that would be funny. But really all I hear is crying about them doing business their way and not everyone else's way. Everyone is crying like a child for regulation, the gov should control everything, how stupid. LOL people jump in their cars and pretend to be taxis LOL, those people were drivers before uber, nothing about them changed, still driving from one point to the next, only difference is now for hire.

Muser may have been removed from the uber app but there is no cross app regulating being conducted. There are several ride sharing companies emerging in markets in different cities and no one keeps track of how long a driver drives from one app to another. Something that should have been reported in this episode. Also, this episode was extremely biased in only giving one sided depictions of confrontations between riders and drivers. I've been in several pools in the early morning hours 2 to 3a.m where I've witnessed women passengers sexually assaulting their male drivers, women passengers physically and verbally assaulting male drivers, women passengers becoming so irate that they've damaged property in the driver's car. Why does this episode not speak to any of these offenders? People need to be held accountable for their actions regardless of gender. All ridesharing companies, and there are many, not just uber and lyft, need to be held accountable for both drivers they link passengers to and passengers drivers are exposed to. Just keep things fair!

What about the safety of the drivers? Remember Uber drivers are civilians too, and I bet they are at a higher risk of being exposed to danger than their clients. I mean, these guys get called dozens of times a day by complete strangers to take them to random places. Stop making them look like a bunch of sex offenders. Address Uber SAFETY as a whole.

Everyone knows uber is just random people using their car, its common sense that something is more liekly to happen to you getting in a car with a stranger from an app. No ones forcing you to use uber, that's the risk you assume when you want to save a couple dollars.
