WHAT IS AGARWOOD O LAPNISAN?
Agarwood is actually a trade name for the dark resinous wood, which are extracted from the Aquilaria sp. trees and processed to obtain an essential oil, called oud. From the raw agarwood, processing arrived at different grades and by-products, which are priced differently according to the market demand, ranging from USD100 to USD100,000.
Agarwood is produced from infected woods or resin of Aquilaria trees. The aromatic resin obtained from this tree is one of the most famous and most expensive on the planet. It has a very long history of use in religious/wedding ceremonies, as incense and perfumes, for medicinal value and food ingredients. Commonly harvested in the wild, successful trials of cultivation and induction to ensure infection and production of resin becomes a promising sustainable economic practice.
Some called agarwood as perfume or incense of the gods and rich, some call it black gold. The extremely high prices paid for high quality agar wood and essential oil create treasure-hunt like pressure to the Aquilaria sp resulting to indiscriminate felling of both diseased and healthy trees, threatening Aquilaria trees, including Aquilaria malaccensis, to extinction. These must be addressed by science-back approach and knowledge-based education about agarwood.
A. malaccensis is a species of Agarwood tree in the Thymelaeaceae family. It is found endemic in the Philippines and Laos, as well as in other Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Singapore, and Thailand. It is also raised in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, China and Australia. It is a threatened species by habitat loss under the IUNC Red list of CITES. If not cultivated, discrete sourcing and extraction of the agarwood species in its wild habitat will continue unabated and may face sooner extinction.
The trees are cultivated to healthy robust trees, until reaching the desired age (6-8yrs old) when they are ready for inoculation of disease agents (pathogens). to induce production of infected wood called agarwood, which in turned processed into oud oil. The production of agarwood is a result of the tree’s defense mechanism to fight back the disease and produce resin/oil contained in the stained wood.

The Company has established a partnership with Gourmet Farms to promote and distribute Agarwood seedlings from their nursery operations in Tagaytay to the public. Iba Botanicals together with Gourmet Farms will provide training seminars to address all the necessary requirements and techniques needed to successfully cultivate Aquilaria trees, from propagation through to harvesting, licensing and permitting, and marketing.
The main goals for this project are the following: generate high value land use; catalyze socio economic activities in the countryside; promote greening, reforestation and ecological enhancement; and the protection of this endangered species from extinction.
