Isaac Dunbar - boy. An exclusive at-home performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best in new music.
For the Cape Cod-bred seventeen-year-old who writes and produces songs from his bedroom, music is essential to Isaac Dunbar. The son of a West African dad and European mom, he masterfully wields music as a tool of expression, a means with which to outwardly grapple with his sexuality, his relationships and his deepest (and sometimes darkest) thoughts. Counting Lady Gaga as an early inspiration, Dunbar dresses like he just walked off the set of one of her music videos; His synth-laden, sometimes boisterous production-style pulls influence from albums like ‘The Fame Monster’ and 'Artpop.' His age belies him, especially on his first full-length project, “balloons don’t float here.” It's an 8-track array of songs that share wisdom beyond his years. Dunbar’s advanced emotional maturity is something that he's keenly aware of himself. “if only we were right/seasoned with time,” he sings on “boy,” from this year’s ‘isaac’s insects’ EP, while obsessing over a hypothetical life with a crush. Curled up in the corner of his room, his Vevo at Home performance of “boy” gives the song an intimate context, a genuine glimpse into his special world.
