Had she not let herself into that entanglement w Roger Mortimer I think her reputation would’ve been that of a saviour. Nevertheless, she was a strong woman, and one whose story is fascinating! Icl, she ranks higher in my “best to worst Queens Consort of England” list than she maybe should, but ultimately I feel sympathy for her situation and admire her strength

Thank you. I think Isabella would have been revered as a heroine if she had just bought Edward the prince back to England by herself. Perhaps one could understand the poor woman wanting some romance in her sad life but , with Mortimer, she made a bad mistake. Her son made an excellent king even with, unknowingly, causing the way for England to descend into civil war. Sometimes having too many sons is a problem. 🙏🙏👵🇦🇺

The Accursed Kings by Maurice Druon covers the whole French family including the life and times of Isabella and her family. There was a tv series many years as well. Absolutely fascinating. They were so corrupt!

To gay man she’s a little polarizing because she’s sort of an anti-hero, I mean Edward did take the hot poker up the bum that they reserved for “us” back then…but I’ve always loved strong women and he likely broke her heart and made it hard so I’m happy to enjoy learning what I don’t know about history. Wasn't Margaret of Anjou called the she wolf by Shakespeare? It's a back handed compliment for a woman. She's not a pushover. She can hold her own with the mediaeval lords.

The disunity in France with her nobles not under the full control of the French king would've served as the model for many English nobles in their relationship with their own king.

Given how Edward II humiliated his wife and his lack of awareness or care about his subjects opinions of his affairs, I think Isabella was within her right to do what she did to save her older son's throne.

She was a pawn of her father who grew up to take what control she could over her own life, for her and her children's sake. Of course, male commentators of the day would disparage an intelligent, strong, and determined woman. In particular, one that could have so much impact on society and the power of those male commentators.

An energetic, protagonistic and not very faithful queen married to a politically weak king who had a male lover. All this in the very moralistic and religious Middle Ages. What in this story wouldn't make Machiavelli laugh and consider his conclusion that politics exists in a space where morality and religion must be ignored?

I very much admire her as long as the story of Edward the second being put to death by red hot pokers stuck up his arse “so as to not leave any marks on the royal body” is not true. God, I hope not. Apparently his screams were heard throughout the entire castle.

Thank you TPP for the doco of a Great & Mighty woman Isabella and her title The She Wolf of France so aptly fits what she had to become because of her husband. His sexual orientation, though "bi" he tended more towards his own gender, due to this young Isabella had to grow up faster than anticipated. And just like the characteristics of a wolf, she became slow and deliberate in her movements to be able to become aggressive and self-assertive. The King molded her into, not only a formidable opponent but he pushed her into the arms of another man because as any young woman of that time period she would have wanted a good marriage which she never got, to be dearly loved or at best to be given respect and kindness, and to have her heart and mind be heard and listened to by the man she stood beside. Unfortunately the King never gave her these things, all her emotional needs, sexual desires, mindfulness, time, paradigm thinking discussions, and a sense of being: it appears Isabella found all these things in her beloved Mortimer. Though Mortimer had a wife and many children, that's life since time began, separations, failed relationships with new relationships emerging and the spouse having to deal with all the hurt and pain that goes with it as to still keep going no matter what, after all Isabella was enduring that already. And what did Isabella do, her wolf instincts kicked in to slowly keeping going, be deliberate and do what she needed to do and at least she was blessed with what she wanted in Mortimer a strong bond of 10 yrs. 💞💝💞

As you mentioned, she received an elite education and showed courage and bravery form breaking the patterns of power limited her, clearing sending a statement that SHE was power (as in, empowered) and that she intended ot show how to NOT mess up with her.
