Today I am once again joined by Dr. Emma Cahill Marron to discuss another member of the Spanish Monarchy - Isabella of Portugal. She was the niece of Katherine of Aragon and wife of Charles V. But, as usual, we don't just talk about Isabella - Enjoy!

Isabel of Portugal is one of my favorite queens. She was an effective regent during her husband's long absences. Poor woman, spent a lot of time alone with her health problems, death of loved ones, the responsibility of a government and caring for her children. She took the defense of her aunt Catherine of Aragon very seriously, she moved heaven and earth to help her. Until a few years ago, Empress Isabel was in the shadow of Charles V and Philip II. Thanks to all the historians who have brought her to light.

What a fantastic discussion! Dr. Marron is a treasure trove of knowledge & I can listen to her talk all day. I find it strange that it is never mentioned that Catalina de Aragón is also the aunt of Isabel de Portugal when discussing "The Great Matter" & the papacy. Fascinating connection between Catalina & Parr.

This was amazing, thank you. This lady just loves her work so much - and it shows! They knew nothing of genetics back then and wouldn’t have grown up with cousins as we do today. They would have been strangers to each other most likely. Isabella looks like a very beautiful lady 🙏🙏🙏🙏👵🇦🇺

Best love stories were Henry the 7th, & Elizabeth of York, Charles and Isabella and Victoria and Albert. Love their love stories.

I'm sure there is more. Also I was named after a second cousin, who is alive. I found out that usually women are named after family members who are usually not the mother but other relations.

There was a sister Isabel(la) who was first married to Manuel and she had a boy named miguel but she died after giving childbirth to him. Then miguel went to be raised by Isabella I of castile and ferdinand of aragon but he also died shortly

You are so right! We talked about little Miguel de la Paz in the episode on Isabel(la) of Castile. Poor boy, he is buried in the Capilla Real in Granada with his grandmother 😢

The Hapsburgs are still around. They stopped marrying their cousins. The old Italian coins have picture of Isabella and the Santa Maria ship.

Southern Italy was part of the Kingdom of Aragon. You should tell the story of St. Francis Borgia. He loved Isabella. Francis married one of her ladies. Francis was so distraught when isabella died, he swore he would never serve an earthly master. Francis becomes Duke of Gandia. He was so good and beloved. After his wife died, he renounced this life, and joined the Jesuits. Francis father was murdered before his presence. Francis was the grandson of the pope, Alexander Borgia. Francis is the polar opposite of Henry viii.
