A chapter by chapter verse by verse study of the book of Isaiah.
We are continuing our study of Isaiah and we have come to Isaiah 52:13 which I told you last time should be included with Isaiah 53. Remember the chapter numbers and verses are not inspired, they are only tools to help us find certain passages.
So the last part of 52 on into 53 is the greatest prophecy of Messiah. Expositors have called this chapter the Holy of Holies of Isaiah. Most of the approximately 80 references to Isaiah in the New Testament come from this 53rd chapter.
This chapter is about His crucifixion. Many scholars and skeptics say this is too perfect a prophecy it had to be written by somebody besides Isaiah. It had to be written after Christ was crucified.
This is obviously and error on their part because as we have already mentioned Jesus Christ quoted from both half’s of Isaiah. Letting us know it was the same man. This is so incredibly accurate, speaking of Messiah and the fulfillment of His mission here on earth.
Christ will be marred more than any man yet He will be the King of Kings.
This portion breaks down like this,
1. The Suffering Servant (Isaiah 52:13-15)
This is how man saw the suffering MessiahThere are four accounts of the life of Jesus, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and they all portray him in the same manner. The life of Christ was a hard one, in that most people did not esteem Him as He deserved. Many followed Him in a shallow way and later left Him. Others, as Isaiah predicted, actually despised Him. Christ experienced hardship and rejection not only at his death, but right from the beginning of His ministry.
2. The Lamb’s Life (Isaiah 53:1-3)
Jesus led an exemplary life, He was a good man, bearing other people's griefs and sorrows in the good works that he did. There is another reference, later in the chapter, to the goodness of Jesus, that he never committed any violence or deceit.
Jesus led a sinless life. He "knew no sin", "a lamb without blemish", "in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin".
3. The Lamb’s Death (Isaiah 53:4-6)The very name "Lamb of God" would have no significance but for the death of Christ.
Isaiah emphasisis that Christ’s punishment and death is vicarious.
A vicarious act is one that is done on behalf of another, or in someone else’s place. Christ was punished not for any crime or sin of His own, but for yours and mine, that you and I could have our punishment cancelled. He suffered and died on our behalf that we ourselves should not suffer what is our due.
4. The Lamb’s Suffering (Isaiah 53:7-9)
Jesus died with the meek submission of a lamb. He suffered unjustly, yet He did not revile or curse those who punished Him. "He did not open His mouth”. Again Peter nicely summarizes this fact about about Christ’s death: "He committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in his mouth. While being reviled, he did not revile in return. He spoke no threats, but kept his trust towards him who judges righteously".
5. The Lamb’s Glory (Isaiah 53:10-12)
God was "satisfied" and "pleased" because at last a full and final sin offering had been made for the sins of the world. Thus "the pleasure of the Lord" being His gracious will and purpose to save mankind, would "prosper" in Christ's hand, because Christ would render Himself as the necessary sin offering to enable God to righteously forgive unrighteousness.
13 Behold, My Servant shall deal prudently; He shall be exalted and extolled and be very high.
The Hebrew word extolled is the same word as lifted up. This is the same word that Jesus used in the New Testament when speaking with His disciples in John when He said, "And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself." Jesus when referring to being lifted up as referring to His death on the cross, as He would be lifted up upon a cross. In context this signifies the manor of death He would face.
