They should have performed at the Coronation Without a doubt…..,, This family is making history as the most talented family in the WORLD! Bravo Sheku and Isata and Rachmaninoff
Most people mistake this for a cello sonata, but it is a sonata for cello AND piano. The balance in the cello and piano relationship in this piece is beautifully and soulfully brought forth by the brother-sister duo. Possibly the best I've heard of the third movement.
I’m not quite sure people realize how epic this performance is. Let’s start with the piano part. It’s an all-out concerto. Yet Isata plays this with frighting ease. Sheku probably has the best cello on the planet. His instrument doesn’t sound muffled; it sounds open and flexible. Sheku’s shifts capture subtleties that are amazing! I know there are other performances of this piece out there, but they don’t capture what is captured here, sorry. And for some reason I keep coming back to this recording, yet I can’t quite put my finger on why it’s so gripping. Rhythmically, I think Isata and Skeku understand this piece on a totally different level. Some slow passages are played almost metronomically, yet that seems to bring out the beauty of certain melodies even more. The audio engineers also did gold standard work here. The piano sounds like heaven!
I love this family! Thank you for sharing the God-given talent with the world! I also want to acknowledge the music script turner. You play and important role and your presence on stage completes the sense of "wonder" exhibited on stage. Blessings!❤🙏🏾
DMP I totally agree with you. I am just going to say it in lament terms. These two musicians are so passionate in their playing it just takes you on a journey of pure bliss. And it also helps that they are siblings and practice and play with each other ALOT!!!! They know each other so well musically that when you hear their chemistry of playing with each other, its becomes magical. If I wasn't at work (I am watching this on my lunch break). I would be crying like a baby. This piece really moves me and is why I have it on my play list.
I think 'Muffled', yes that's what it is .. but not just muffled but the instruments used sound metallic or it may be the Acoustics. The quality of their Instruments and yes the Sound Engineering is like a Motion Picture. I'm still trying to describe what is unique and special here. Not only is it very Visual music and dramatic, but you can hear Every-Single-Note. I have heard Bach and Beethoven but could not Feel exactly what they were trying to convey although the music was amazing to hear to the ear. Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason goes Much, Much Deeper in depth with there playing and music, evokes emotion, depths of the soul. Makes you Feel what they're playing and therefore can almost elicit what the composers were trying to say in the music or at least feeling. Sheku goes Deep, you can tell when a singer or musician like Actors really goes all in, when they release from the soul, character, words within themselves coming out of the music in the end .. it is very slow as to release and let go of themselves from that connection. Kind of like sharing
A live performance that competes with the studio recordings. Fun to watch, moving, and technically impressive. Thank you Kanneh-Masons and to the BBC for the production quality in capturing this performance.
Over 40 years ago, a cellist friend and I played this (a bit badly to be honest) as music students at the University of Western Ontario in Canada. Lately I've rediscovered this piece and have been listening to various recordings on RU-vid. Then I discovered this astonishing and brilliant performance by Isata and Sheku. Far above other musicians, the deep connection between sister and brother enabled a breathtaking interpretation of Rachmaninoff. I loved the vigorous speeds and the equality of piano and cello revealed things I've never heard before. Thank you!
Beautiful. The soul of the Celloist comes out through his music so real and transcendent. The pianist too plays with such grace and care. Beautiful performance by two beautiful people
Rachmaninoff’s symphonic grasp of the piano, along with his unbelievable melodic and harmonic colour make this one of the greatest cello sonatas ever composed, and indeed one of Rachmaninoff’s best compositions. The cello is allowed to sing in part due to the quite fiendish piano writing!
This reminds my childhood when I usually hear my dad at the cello and my mother at the piano. That was when I got addicted to chamber music. And this sonata is a very special masterpiece. Almost as if Rachmaninov was crying eternally. So I am.
Listening to Isata and Sheku in Santander last night was a rare pleasure. Chatting and sharing dinner with these incredibly nice and talented young people for two hours was simply marvelous. All the best always!
I should have been cleaning the kitchen floor, but this came up on RU-vid and this won. That's what happens with RU-vid on a Sunday morning. What an enjoyable performance.
Shekku's sound has matured and he has lived in this music . Can't wait to hear his Debussy Sonata ! Isata has all the technique and musicality to play with him . I heard her Gubaidulina Chaconne and will never forget it !
A stunning performance! They understand what Rachmaninov wanted to achieve with this composition. One will be hard pressed to find a better performance anywhere.
I have become a huge fan of this whole family, Mum and Dad must be so proud ! I have tickets to see /hear them in August in Melbourne Australia, hope it happens 🤩
@@plumb.474 how was it? I couldn’t get to see them in person, but I was able to see the concert streamed from their performance in Boston. It was wonderful. I hope to see it on RU-vid soon. This Rachmaninov piece was part of their first USA tour. I wish that I could have see this live also. They played this so beautifully. It makes me want to cry.
What a remarkable setting, both sad and inspiring, still they fill the Royal Albert Hall with this explosion of emotions. And they could shoot inspiring video-pictures as well. But I miss the roar of enthusiasm after the show, an audience gone mad by an overwhelmed experience. And it was cut too abruptly by the editor.
This cellist is magical; I haven't been this blown away since Jacqueline du Pre. His sister is such a good pianst so she should not be overlooked--her masterful ability to mesh with Sheku's playing is a perfect weaving together of instruments. I just ordered his first album (Inspriration) and a second due out in September 2022 ("Song")
Love the way the Kanneh-Mason play within harmony of one another. Elegant cellular interaction vis-a-vie musical notes. Thank you kindly for the Afros, too!
first to say i know very little about classical, but this was absolutely amazing, the sync the 2 has is nothing short of incredible, like a second sense between the siblings
I’m speechless….. tears are a rolling …. Life is good……..this is truly magnificent and majestic - The composer and players work beautifully together……..so many superlatives for this video……this family is without doubt THE MOST MUSICALLY TALENTED FAMILY IN THE WORLD……. I dare you to argue with me!…….. Well done Isata and Sheku…….
Most enjoyable, a truly "living" experience as a performance, always leading on to something even greater, but letting us appreciate the musical landscape with marvellous moments...the development of 1st mvt and the third movement outstanding. What a pity there was not the usual 6000+ audience to enjoy as it happened, but thanks for RU-vid that we can have a front seat. Bravo, both!
I love the music making that I hear here. They have captured the soul of this music. I hear the yearning, angst, passion, joy, reflection, and introspection between both instruments. Excellent work both at the instruments and away from the instruments during your preparations!
the part at 22:50 when the piano takes the newly introduced melody from the cello and adds those beautiful harmonies whilst the cello plays the original theme is just utter perfection.
Maravilhoso!!! Essa família é talento puro... 👏🏾 Toda vez que eu vejo seus vídeos, conseguem me tirar um sorriso no rosto. Vocês são demais... E me inspiram pra seguir também nessa carreira de músico !!!
Bravos You both have turned this piece into some sort of Gran Duo Sonata, as the piano and violoncello are equally magnificent to the highest level of interpretation. You dwell inside the instruments while playing. And your talents brake a few orthodox petrified ideas that the best has already been played. I wish I knew more to be able to write more words in my compliment. I am truly a big fan of your Music
Wonderful 👍🏻 clear ideas, solid sound and delicate details on cantabile, the Celo sound are amazing and piano is balanced and expressive, congratulations 🎉👏🏻
I can only interpret their periodic glances at each other as mental signals to reaffirm continuity of harmony and interpretation. This is absolutely beautiful!!
Rajmaninof que con 14 años escribió sus primeras composiciones, algo influenciadas por Tschaikovsky, al que conoció, fue uno de los mejores compositores de la historia, me emociona su música.
