As much as they debate and have different views about things, the dynamic between Uhtred and Alfred is really what elevates this show. So happy you guys enjoying it so far!

the back and forth of the different faiths is crazy in this show, keep along for the ride.

Pagan means a foreign religion that's not monotheistic, or that doesn't believe in just one god, for the Saxons that god is the god of Abraham and his son Jesus, for the pagans it's an old nordic religion with many gods, like Odin, Freya, Thor and others. The saxons had their own pagan religion before being converted by the romans when they were occupying the british isles.

Before the Saxons, the Celts were exposed to Christianity before the Romans adopted it as their official religion (Celtic Cross). The Saxon version of Christianity (and the type portrayed in this show) is an early form of Catholicism, especially with the worship of Rome, worship of saints, church involvement in civil administration, ie; owning land, money, settling disputes, appointing bishops etc.
