As an infj I couldn't agree more. The more I listen to others interpretation of our functions the more I doubt myself, however the more I hear your well thought out explanations the more I understand and embrace my own unique tendencies. Thank you so much & please keep up your excellent work! I really believe you have a more clear understanding of how the functions work than ANY of the other albeit well meaning "experts" on this subject.

As an ISFJ, this helped me better understand why I often struggle with the descriptions of ISFJs. I'm a writer and artist, and I don't fit the "nurse/mom/cook" model that is often used as a shorthand description of my type. This helped me much better understand why I'm introspective and imaginative as an ISFJ, rather than wondering if I'm just a misclassified INFJ. Thank you for seeing us as more than just "the nice person who brings cookies and likes tradition"!

18:49-18:58 Harry, this has always been what most viewers complain about. No one knows what feeling intensely or holistically means. We need more examples, each minute of the video. Every word you say in your videos need to be associated with examples, otherwise your words will be lost in a sea of theory that takes place in a vacuum. Anyway, that’s the only problem I have with your videos. Otherwise, your videos are great! I love them all and I eagerly wait for them every Monday and Thursday. Keep up the good work!

this is excellent. I'm an INFJ and I have a lot of experience with ISFJs (family and close friendships). I feel like ISFJs are extremely misunderstood in the MBTI community. I really like the nuances you pinpoint in your exploration of comparing and contrasting these types ☺️ I find I get along really well with ISFJs and tend toward making intense connections with them. the shared Fe-Ti is such a satisfying basis for understanding and communication. I will probably have to watch this video again 😆 with better focus so I can more fully understand everything you're covering here. My older sister is an ISFJ. We get along great now. We do understand each other in ways I don't connect with other people in my family--although, when we were teenagers, she tried hard to get me to fit into a more traditional, socially acceptable identity (she was trying to "help" me), and I resented it a lot, so we had a lot of conflict. Very interesting! For years I thought I was an INFJ. So much fit, every test told me so... But I relate more to sensing than intuitions... Whenever I found that part of INFJ of not resonne with me, I just ignored it. Never cared about ISFJ simply because I'm not the nursing type and my longterm-memory is far from good. This helped me see the concepts a bit clearer. Thank you!

Thank you for existing. The fact you point out the false dichotomy between sensing and intuition helps so much. Being an isfj won't ban them from using intuition. This makes mbti typing so hard because an isfj could be like "well I do use intuition." This just creates a merry-go-round of not knowing one type because descriptions are too simplistic. Then I feel dumb for "not getting it"

Thanks for describing how ISFJs use Ni. I do use Ni sometimes, but I find that I can't go there until my Si-Ti logic is *PERFECT* before switching into the broad, web view. And it usually takes a while before I'm convinced that my logic is perfect. And thanks for saying that ISFJs might have to point out to INFJs about social harmony. I think one of my friends is an INFJ, but I've been skeptical because sometimes he says something that obviously would damper the mood and I'm just like "Umm... why did you say that 😭" And yes, while I do prefer one on one interactions, I'm also the one who plans for group activities because it's fun to try to get people together. Also, in most of your videos, you're assuming that the person of a type is healthy and well-developed. Is it possible that you could describe what a type looks like when they're not using their functions in a healthy way? For example, there are people who say that unhealthy people who use Fe -- EXFJ and EXTP -- use it to manipulate people. Is there some truth to that?
@CognitivePersonality
@CognitivePersonality 4 года назад
Thanks Gabriel! It's very true that I portray types in a more healthy state; convergent Fe can certainly be used to manipulate, whereas divergent Fe acts more as a safety net for Te manipulation; certainly want to do more on this topic!

this video was so helpful! i have often related more to INFJ, but the descriptions of Ni on the internet are more mystical and less helpful, and i always felt an immense amount of pressure from the admiration and expectations the larger mbti community has, which was why i considered isfj. watching this video, while unfortunately clarifying the infj part, was also helful in understanding my way of thinking and the other cognitive functions more. have to say, though, i’m quite jealous of the isfj types now!

Another wonderful video 🙂. As you mentioned, a lot of type descriptions of the ISFJ seem to depict them as somewhat staid and boring, whereas the reality is that many ISFJs (at least the ones I've met), while they can be somewhat demure, tend to be very receptive to new ideas, and are extremely intellectual. I used to be subscribed to Your Chill ISFJ's channel - did you ever see any of her content? - it unfortunately seems to have disappeared, but she had some lovely videos of discussions with other people in the typology community, and personal anecdotes describing examples of her cognitive functions, or interactions with other types, all very engaging and astute. She has also self-published a couple of poetry anthologies (under her real name, Jami Wilson) - which I'd definitely recommend checking out. Definitely a good example of how ISFJs can be abstract in their thought! By the way - nice T-shirt, Harry. 🙂

What people seem to underestimate is the philisophical attitude of Si heavy types. Jung stated that Si types seem to have a tendancy to question their perception do reality because of its detachment from direct momentary experience. It also seems to be why, depending on the validity of this hypothesis, Si concious types are stereotyped as nostalgic, they preciebe with colorful intensity all of the habits, routines, moments and variables in their immediate minds eye and they kind of buckle under this pressure. Its, ironically, highly timeless. They are just so aware of the subjectivity of existence because of the favt that they observe reality and the moment, but it is so clearly divided. I personally describe it, though my ADHD and high N usage may be apart of this, as observing the outside world through a glass box. You apprehend the detail and orecision that an Se dom may have, but there's that dreamlike sense of detachment and association, allowing for the conjecture of SiNe, and the ability to construct a personal subjective reality around it.

"Where as the infj, probably on an introverted intuitive mission anyway to try and get a point across *[blink blink blink]* , is either focusing in an extraverted feeling sense on one person at a time or not focusing on extraverted feeling at all" I know you might not have meant to purposefully blink like that at that moment for effect because sometimes you blink like that, but that sentence alone killed me and with the blinks, I felt even more called out LOL Also: My sister literally came into my room just now asking if it was too loud when she used the hair dryer because it's 11 pm. I did hear something but I'm really not the person to ask, I was busy in my own world LOL. I suppose I got so good at ignoring what's going on around me in big part due to being an INFJ.

I'm so intrigued with how you brought up that Te and Ne can be prevalent in INFJs as well when they aren't being suppressed by their opposing functions because I have noticed that when I'm by myself or when I have to resolve certain issues that I would prefer to fix alone is that my Te and Ne instantly get enabled - this has led me to so much confusion in the past as I've tried to reconsider that maybe this was an indication of me possibly being an INFP, then again when I'm faced with an external stimulus is that my Fe and Ti just as easily spring back up as a way to correspond with the social situation at hand in order to 'blend in'. Generally, when trying to handle problems that overwhelm me I easily rationalize the situation by setting aside internalized conflicts to resolve the issue I'm dealing with and to compartmentalize my emotions until I'm ready to confront them. Even when taking tests that specify cognitive functions, Ne and Te are present in my stacks, but even so, I was never foreign with the overall technicalities of the functions and even understand how they work, but they aren't as nearly used when I'm faced with the external world, only when I'm under huge amounts of stress or when my dominant functions don't necessarily have anything to contribute when I'm dealing with my own thoughts and ideas is when they start raising their hands to pitch in their insight as well - offering an amplitude of opinions and strategies to deal with things without having to internalize negative emotions that I simply just remind myself to dwell on later. it just fascinates me because this is the only time I've heard someone mention that Te and Ne partake in an INFJ's thought process as well considering people only like to say that the other functions are scarcely ever used or are simply just blindspots because if anything, Te and Ne come naturally to me when they aren't being hidden away by my more prioritized functions. More so like Fine China that is only taken out for very specific occasions, if you will. I also like how you mentioned that one-on-one- interactions are felt more intensely by INFJs than they are by ISFJs considering I do have a very holistic perception when socializing with people, in the sense that in group settings I'm incapable of taking in different people and analyzing their qualities without inevitably being disrupted by another person and feeling severely overwhelmed. I heavily value one-on-one settings because it allows me to take in what the other person is saying without having to be distracted by anything else as I'm only focused on them and I want the intimacy between us to be as unmatched and secure as possible - that probably sounds weird, but I do appreciate how you've emphasized this trait in INFJs as I've always thought that maybe my social skills when dealing with group settings are just very stale.

I am an INFJ mama to an INFP and ISFJ little girls...your videos have been fantastic for all of us, learning to differentiate between ourselves and relating to the similarities. Both of my girls are far more creative than I am, in a real world sense...they infuse creativity in everything they do, and are highly emotional and deeply intuitive ..to a point where they feel almost psychic. I, on the other hand, am creative but it's more internalized while my outside world is more analytical in nature. My ISFJ daughter is extremely expressive with her Fe, and can really be quite the entertainer, has a great sense of humor and loves acting, interior decorating, cake decorating, dress up games and reads a lot of fantasy etc. Her ability to be aware of her bodily sensations, recollect past information, scholastic memory and catch external emotional nuances amazes me. My INFP is so tender, she keeps her emotions to her self and values group harmony, she isn't always aware of why she feels certain things, she is empathetic and sympathetic...her energy is softer than mine and my ISFJ. She has loved the same things for most of her life... Enjoying an idea of routine, she is extremely steadfast and knows who she is at her core and isnt afraid to say what she values...which can surprising at times since her external nature is so soft. She cares deeply for people, animals and the earth. And is you're stereotypical artist- fantastic with fine details and really coordinated with her body and hands. ...phenomenal musician and dancer. ..she can make a bed like nobodies business haha and somehow can organize way better than us introverted J types...but is often locked in daydream land almost oblivious to the external world and bodily sensations. I think what people often forget is that introverted j types are actually perceivers and introverted p types are the opposite. I think it's important to look outside of mbti dichotomies and get back to Jung's basics om cognitive functions... As well as take in accounts enneagram, socionics, if there are any mental disorders, childhood raising style and traumas...then you can paint a clear picture of the complexities of human personality.

I've already seen it where they (both ISFJ) are so through and organized with their methods but when they have shown me user flows the overall intent of what this product is meant to accomplish is off so I'll catch that misalignment and then they can go back to fleshing out the particulars. I also love how they remind me of things I've forgotten when I'm juggling too many to dos and things fall through the cracks.

Okay so I tested as an INFP once when I was 18 and for the past twelve years, an INFJ, then a different RU-vidr said I was an ISFJ which left me spinning... but what I am thinking as I listen to your video is the following: I see how Si operates in an INTP I know who is an attorney, key words you are using that are categorical, systematic, and the nature of files upon files describes how he seems to organize and remember legal concepts; it makes him great at solving legal puzzles. I believe people with Si are great at working in areas that are more procedural. I’m studying to become a psychotherapist and I really enjoy learning theory. I also enjoy meeting with clients and then at the end connecting the theory to my interventions after the fact. I think this method would be backwards for a person with Si. They like having the specific theory in place first and then using established theory or concept to consciously apply techniques/interventions of said theory. In contrast, I may be intentional as to the purpose of a certain theory to conceptualize my case but la-dee-dah about where the therapy session takes us. I find that I’m using multiple theories to inform where we go in session in real time then backtracking to connect my theory to interventions used. So I come prestocked with the theoretical concepts learned in class, but it exists in the subconscious, then I apply interventions linked to the concepts “the gist” in session, in real time. There’s no procedure in that to follow. The members in my family with Si are individuals that work in the medical field whereas when I have tried working in related fields I found procedure, standardized assessments, and just the nature of what the field prioritizes as boring, uninspiring, flat... I commend those who are passionate about it. Funny thing, psychotherapy is headed in that direction too. It won’t be long before psychotherapists are just another kind of “nurse” owned by the medical system. You’ll find less “sage” therapists and more “nurse” therapists, if that makes sense. So anyways, that is how I am connecting to what you are saying. You are correct about how Te operates... makes it difficult for me to be in meetings or group think dynamics. My group members wanted to work on our group project in real time via google share and I found that my thinking was blocked. I told them I typically work best on my own but not without sharing my vision of where I wanted the project to go. Later I completed the entire project on my own into the wee hours of the morning. I do find that I dissociate a lot when speaking in groups or in front of class or work meetings. It’s as if my mind is operating separately from my body (mouth moving, voice, etc.). Exercising Se would probably help more with this, if I had to guess, being mindful and in the present.

Come to think of it, Default is a interesting term here With the Si-Ti and Ni-Ti frameworks built over time i can't help but think as these types grow older and as along as they aren't traumatized by their experiences, eventually these accumulations of perceptions, interactions and more should make extroverting their aspirations easier and easier. Also, the great part about your videos is that it always makes me learn a new definition, i always thought opaque meant transparent, turns out its the opposite.

I'm ISFJ but I also feel INTP as well. I want a 5 signs I'm not an INTP as well. Another thing is what is the point of learning this? Like I feel like knowing I'm ISFJ has done more harm than good because now I unconsciously do stuff which the stereotypical ISFJ does, and I feel like I wouldn't do that if I didn't know my type. Like if I thought I was INTP I would try to be all intellectual like y'know. I feel like the mbti stereotypes have plagued this community to the point where they act in accordance with their label, unconsciously, and they're not self aware enough to realise it. Another interesting discussion would be as to what responsibilities would you be exempt from because of your type. Like if I tell an Infp to stop procrastinating or an Intj to stop being a douche(I'll word it differently when I call them out, because saying they're wrong probably doesn't do anything), would it be too much to ask. Also the type stereotypes have become so ingrained in me, that the way you talk and articulate is just so interesting to me. Hi, you're one of the few who explain things clearly with how the functions work. I have just made an experiment on myself and I read an article from an MBTI practicioner to try and determine if ISFJ or INFJ. I end up having traits of both, not knowing how to know if I'm more of one or the other type. Ending up thinking I'm more ISFJ as I am nostalgic, ... And when I come to your video here explaining the functions and how they interact with each other and how it makes our brain process information, I'm an INFJ ... Carl Jung's functions are the only real way to know your real perception of the world.
@somebodysomeone453
@somebodysomeone453 3 года назад
And may I add that I've noticed that real NF types so the ones determined by Carl Jung's functions to make up the 4 letters and not the other way round (which nobody should do, don't take online tests or ask MBTI people, only use the understanding of Carl Jung's functions) tend to be pretty nostalgic contrary to the belief. It's not behaviour psychology here, only analytical so it's just an observation but I think people tend to put traits on people way too much which morever are fake. MBTI is fake cause it gives a personality. A personality has behaviour traits. Carl Jung s functions is the only way to know how your brain works.

Thanks for your video, Harry! Feeling closer again to my real type. 💗 (Surprisingly, I explored my Ti with the video, though not by descriptions within. Resonating with both N S traits, two ideas appeared. ①Questioning if descriptions are 【mutually inconsistent】. --If both types can resonate, unquantified traits may not be reliable. ②Finding other differentiating perspectives based on 【general conclusion】 . --Can we look at more interaction within functions and systems, or the "ecological niche" of each type relative to external mindsets, ...? Maybe the former is Ti-Si while the latter clings to Ti-Ni. And curious if compared to the self-statements and resonating, the "unintentional perspective" matters more in typing? To what extent it correlates to cognitive functions and will it be more or less influenced by environment or contest?)

Thanks Harry. I admit I was mistyping an ISTJ I know as INFJ and then INTJ for a while. I've realized that many ISXJs go frequently into their Ne, you can just see their eyes light up and possible scenarios start coming out. I've also noticed that INFJs can be rather Se heavy. I know this is a bad system to use, but sometimes I think of INFJs as nicer versions of ISTPs, and ISTPs as colder versions of INFJs. Of course, a more accurate distinguisher is how long their Fe can be maintained. Harry, something I need help with is telling the difference between ISTJ and ISFJ. Or more specifically, I need a consistent framework for showing others that someone is ISFJ as opposed to ISTJ, or vice versa. Anyways, this is me requesting an ISTJ vs ISFJ comparison at your leisure! Thanks for the content and I'm sorry I came off a bit cold in my other comments. On the bright side, I think I figured out some important things as a result. Cheers, -Bill Update, I think the ISTJ was INTJ lol. I notice that when I believe in a compatibility theory, often times I get tempted to change people's types to fit that. At the time I typed them ISTJ, I was into socionics.
@CognitivePersonality
@CognitivePersonality 3 года назад
I'll make a note of it! In the meantime, I would say the ISFJ is a little more logically detached, and vice versa for the ISTJ. The ISFJ's Fe authority tends to make them highly sensitive to social stimuli on a gut level, whereas the relationship to social stimuli in the ISTJ's case is more *indirect*. Cheers!

Great video, brought a lot of fantastic insight and greater understanding of the functions. It seems that the quality in which you experience iNtuition depends on the quality of your Sensory experiences. Maybe Si is underdeveloped in INFJs because because they rely too heavily on their dominant iNtuition, as opposed to experience something for what it has to offer in the internal and external sensory world. Their automatic iNtuition drive pairs with the auxiliary functions, Ni Ti for example - as opposed to Si Ti, developing a mind that relies on the abilities that Ni has to offer, and not Si. I believe that a well developed Ni can only be achieved when the auxiliary functions are paired with both Si and Ni. The experience of a moment forms memories that become the puzzle pieces for our iNtuition to play with. Where ISFJs may be lacking in an ability to dissolve the walls between memories, INFJs lack in experiencing the present moment - forming memories simply for what they are, and instead comparing the moment to the web of frequencies they're already familiar with. The quality of the details (fine-tuning) of the puzzle pieces comes from Si. Maybe INFJs care more for their ability of putting the puzzle together than the details within the pieces? I'd argue that if we make a conscious effort to tap into our subservient observer more often, we will experience a greater development of our dominant observer. I'd like to know how neuroticism plays a part in this. Would assertive individuals have an easier time trusting their inferior observer?
@CognitivePersonality
@CognitivePersonality 4 года назад
Love this! I agree with your supposition - Si and Ni are only complete when united :) Neurotic people tend to (though certainly not always) have a more antagonistic relationship with their opposing functions, and a bit more 'digging' (e.g. ISFJ SiNi-Ti-Fi) from the dominant position in an attempt to compensate.

@@That_Awkward_Mum it's an 8 by 4 system. So everyone has a dominant function plus a preferences for 1 of the 4 perception/judgement functions depending on your your Dom function. So a perception dom could pair with any of the judgement function. So Harry for instance Is NiTi. But you can also have NiTe, NiFe, and NiFi. So each MBTI type actually correlates with 2 cognitive types. So there would be INTJ-Ti and INTJ-Te. However the dichotomies don't work and are confusing. So I'm trying to come up with a simple but more accurate and usable system that can then directly lead into more complex cognitive function systems like Harry's.

I have a question for you. As soon as I figure out how to ask it. Okay- a psychiatrist told me (eons ago) that I have a divergent thinking pattern. That most of the world is divided basically 50/50 between two main thinking patterns. I am kind of assuming this is the Extraverted and Introverted types, but I am not sure if that was what was meant at all and, so, I only assume it part time. She said the third pattern was extremely rare, estimated at 3% of everyone who ever lived. She did not tell me the names of any of the patterns. I had heard of this concept, before. I was told a 4th has been added since then, but I dont' know anything about that. We discussed that within the two main types there would be variations that would come "close enough" to be able to feel some connection. This has very rarely happened and not with anyone who knew their MBTI type, I can tell you! I got INFJ as a type, again and again, but the more I studied up on things the more I got all sorts of other types, intraverted and extraverted, P and J, etc. I began looking at the rarest types, thinking they would be more likely to be the people who were on the fringe so more chance of me being understood by them. But, now I am wondering if, perhaps, the larger groups of people wouldn't actually be more likely to be extra full of variation. Per your description of ISFJ and ISFP, It seems rather likely I am closest to one of those. And, (sigh) You know, I'd gladly pay to be typed if I thought it would do some good ,but I am not sure it would, if I am that weird. What do you think?

I figured since I've already spammed multiple comments on many INTP videos you've made that I'd comment on this particular question I have here, especially since it's technically related as ISFJs are a sort of cousin-type to the INTP. I've always had a very categorical view of the many different systems in the Jungian community. I remember on the ISFP(vs INFP,) another type who uses Ni-Fi (far more conciously than many INTPs, but it still seems to be a commonality) and Ti-Si, that you stated how archetypical these types can be in relation to how personality is formed and maintained. Would this sort of categorical, specific logical system and broad, archetypical view of motives and personality be fitting of another type who uses this axis like an INTP or INTJ, and in this case, ISFJs? Would it also be related to Ne-Fe and how it fills in the gaps relating to external human order?
@CognitivePersonality
@CognitivePersonality 3 года назад
Yes all N-F pairings on some level engage in archetypes :) An ISFJ employs Ne-Fe in a 'vibe-like' manner, assigning archetypes to atmospheres etc. They also have an underlying Ni-Fi that can on occasion render one's authentic self an archetypal expression of some form too!

Hello curious ixfjs how do you guys utilize fe to help a fellow get out of the endless pit which is the unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Yes I do believe knowledge to be something one should seek after, yes one should love to learn, but you see there is an issue with the fellow. They can't sleep for days because their brain is demanding them to learn and consume data until organ failure. Ya see missing sleep will cause a fellow to obtain sleep debt and can take away years of one's life. So ixfjs what would you do to get a person to stop tumbling down the rabbit whole of statistics and data because in all honesty this fellow feels like a damsel in distress and statically, hypothetically speaking, fe ti should break an ne te loop and save the hypnotized fe parent because the child function and ne hero function are so mischievous while si encourages the process behind the scene. So again I ask of you ixfjs what you would do to get a fellow out of this rut with words alone? Other types feel free to answer as well. :)
