Why are do so many ENTPs mistype as INFJs? In this video I present a new look at the ENTP personality type, and explore the ways in which this type is far more empathetic than commonly understood.
Does the scientific-debator ENTP exist? Absolutely, but I would argue this is a rarer manifestation of a type that typically employs far more Extraverted Feeling than the modern paradigms would suggest.
5 Signs You're Not An ENTP: • 5 Signs You're Not An ...

About me:
Hi, I'm Harry, and I'm intensely passionate about personality typing and self-development - so much so that I have created my own Jung-inspired system, taking a more high-resolution look at the factors making up personality.
Through Cognitive Personality Theory I examine the underlying mechanisms behind cognition, and the means through which a single type can have limitless individual variation - I believe type itself is just a set of cognitive predispositions that can according to the needs of the situation be overcome.
I don't believe any type is limited in what they can achieve, but have noticed sensationalist attitudes and internet trends propagating a culture in which type-development is actively discouraged in favour of conforming to simplistic archetypes. Through CPT I hope to dispel various myths and oversimplifications of what constitutes personality type, and along the way encourage a healthier attitude towards type that allows a person to become not who they are told they are, but rather who they want to be.

Oh? I thought it was to be expected; how much time do they have for their own emotions? And if they need to be alone too much they won't have much outside input for reflection. It's a bit like they'd need to pull their own weight, but they're not into pulling. So I can imagine their mental own-emotion muscles atrophying.

Because if you actually do have intense emotions you can't guarantee that you can get the social outcome that you want because the situation in question requiers a different emotion. Feelings have sense as a reflection of the world around you, not as a result of you're own state. Why? Because you have the impression that you can't be understood.
@geetee8665
@geetee8665 10 месяцев назад
I believe it's because we can perspective shift by imagining a scenario by moving through the events using a cause and effect logical analysis to forsee who will and will not be happy or not happy about a certain result from the task at hand. That's how that looks, we don't have a good personal fluid use of colorful emotions and warm expressions, we are not silly or playful, and we don't get what's inappropriate to make funny comments on until it's too late because we often speak on sacred aspects of life as if they are just ideas to throw around, however these things are not okay at all times and around all types, we get better once we are aware of this and want to evolve.

I’m a female ENTP mistyped as a feeler (as many women are) for years. I had to pause the video when you mentioned the need for for social affirmation and attention because I resonate so much. @@CognitivePersonalityTheory absolutely, I second what David said! I’ve mistyped as enfp and INFJ almost simultaneously every other time I took the test. So out of my confusion, I’ve studied the cognitive functions like introverted feeling, but never personally related to it. I’ve always felt people’s emotions to a point where I sometimes cannot control my tears. I believe it’s my Ne read of people and zooming into Fe, I then pair Fe with Ti to take care of what’s happening in the moment because I know it will lead to what’s underlying. I’ve never felt so heard in MBTI because I’ve bounced between enfp and INFJ for too long, but entp empath sounds more suitable

My goodness, thank you. I'm an ENTP and while I am not sensitive in terms of my own feelings and don't get easily hurt, I am extremely sensitive to the emotions of others and empathetic to a degree that can sometimes veer into unhealthy. I rarely cry for myself, but I can't see someone else crying without crying too, and the amount of pain and suffering and injustice in the world can cause distress levels that can be alarming unless I consciously pull back. Do I love to argue? Indeed. But I argue about things because they matter, and because I care. It's not illogical to care.

And as I got older, I was taken out of school, and we moved a lot. It took a large toll on my social intuition and I'm still trying to rebuild it. “ENTPs prefer the every day expression of caring to big gestures...” Spot On! It actually tends to derail my interest in the early stages of friendship or dating if someone goes really big right at the beginning. A) It’s unsustainable and B) It comes across as needy and/or suspect. Now you apparently want/expect something from me that I might not be keen on being coerced into. Slow and steady wins the race 😉. Plus, being beneficial in my day to day life with little things gives me time and an excuse to get to know and appreciate you better. The adjusting empath in me is always uneasy about inserting myself too much into someone’s life. I don’t want to push in, take over or appropriate someone’s life, especially if I like or am attracted to them. I always give people space to reach back out to me to make sure they are as invested in the connection as I am.

By far the best video on ENTP emotional processing that I've seen. It so true about wanting everyone to be happy and trying to help, be humorous, and look out for any outsiders, while beeing deeply embarrassed when people give you praise. The only reward I need is to see people smile. That being said I do like to point out that there is a technical difference between being an empath, which means you are clairsentient and actually feel the emotions of others, as opposed to being empathetic, which means to imagine and relate to anothers suffering. (From ENTP claircognizant empath)

I’m an ENTP and my ex is a ENFP. She broke up with me because she thought I didn’t love people. She was afraid I would offend people. I’m so glad I found this video. I do care about people, but I do this by encouraging everyone to question the truth. I want everyone to be happy, but I think there is a logical way to get there. Sadly this logical way of getting there involves being blunt. I know that taking drugs will not make someone happy in the long run. Other types would support people who struggle with this by letting them continue their bad habits because they don’t want to offend the druggy. I know that the druggy will be happier off of drugs, so I am blunt to him/her and I warn them of the consequences of continuing their stupid mistakes. I care for people. I just use logic to get there.

I'm an INFJ, but this is something I do as well, ha! Caring for someone means being honest, true friends tell you when you are fucking up, enabling people is not love, rather the opposite. Also, it goes both ways, I don't want people I trust to tell me what they think I want to hear! Give it to me straight, lol. This might be my enneagram 6w5, but, I just think honesty is the only trustworthy quality (vs. the alternative); if I fuck up and don't know it, I also want to be told. Caressing my ego won't help me, so I want people to tell me the truth in my face if they truly care, and so I do the same.

I'm ENTP and keep telling myself I have low empathy. What you said about "Not wanting to ruin others social experience" is spot on. If someone is bleeding, puking or being sick, I'm usually the first one to help them while showing the rest how it's done. I have a dark sense of humor and tend to think about how gruesome things would be in real life and it clearly bothers me at times, I just won't admit it to others. But as an ENTP, the most logical thing to do is opening more up. People kill themselves instead of it after all, and I wouldn't be the first one to give it a thought. Being creative is another trait I possess, with very little boundary. I feel we are in the past all the time. Where is my brain chip implant and HUD in real life? Neural thought control would be excellent. If we can make a Tesla Roadster going 0-60 in 1.9 seconds, why can't we get a HUD?

Wow! Resonates pretty deeply. I host a lot out of my home, and when someone who attended one of my parties recently asked: "How come so many people love you?" I deflected and just made it sound like anyone can do what I do, but then he persisted and wrote me this: "I value your genuineness and sure everyone around you do too. I am also sure that hosting parties and owning a beautiful place like yours, cooking ribs, isn’t the main thing people love you for. It’s your character. You’re an artist, respectful, and have a beautiful spirit. You make people smile and forget their sad times once they walk in at the door."

You cannot understand how I enjoy your nuanced perspective. You do take into consideration that there is a multiplicity of other things that influence the way we think and behave. Keep up the good work, this is how everyone should approach personality types. As an ENTP, this was very refreshing, considering we are often portrayed as mild sociopaths. You are absolutely right when you say ENTPs can see themselves as having psychopathic traits, but at the same time, placed in any social atmosphere, my behaviors are all centered toward maintaining the social harmony or enhancing it. As a type that takes into consideration the bigger picture in our decision making, we can seem cold in the present, but this is sometimes because, I think, that we believe that the current moment even if uncomfortable, leads to a better outcome moving forward, enhancing the general social harmony of our environment. Anyway, thank you.

Yes indeed, I seek through CPT to cover all the possible cognitive factors while also distinguishing between cognition and personality factors such as identity - I'm starting with cognition and may in the future branch out from there :) Your description of your own experience as an ENTP is great - Ne is often a future oriented function, especially with the near-future, so the ENTP will so long as the Fe world is in order definitely be forward moving by nature!

I actually mis identified as intp because I thought I was introverted, and they have the same 2 main functions but they're reversed, what really madee realize that I'm entp is the fact that since my Si is my inferior function I absolutely hate control like if you force me to do something I'll do the opposite just to spite you

I went through a process where I thought I was Intp then I realized I was more social in comparison to intps, which made me think I could be a feeler type so I decided I might be an infp, but I was definitely not that emotional and I was also still more Entp like. It l Took me about a year but I finally figured out I have been an Entp this entire time. It’s kinda of crazy looking back because I used the intp and infp label to shape how I acted, “‘masks” and it actually caused me a lot of problems because using theses “masks” caused me to act contrary to my true self which as an Entp is actually extroverted although I do enjoy alone time. Properly typing yourself is important because if you mistype you unconsciously will shape your interaction styles to be more like the stereotypes of those mistyped types. This video also was really interesting I watched the whole thing CS Joseph also made some eye opening videos which helped me properly type myslef.

Driven to deeply understand my social situation whatever it is and make a positive impact. Even as a child in grade school I wondered why I felt a need to find something nice about someone who was somewhat shunned and give a compliment to make them feel better. Yes, on the the MB test I am an over the top extrovert yet need lots of alone time to “research, process and think about” the things going on around me so I can make sense of the behaviors, health, feelings around me and then be a positive influence. Holy Toledo, Im doing my extrovert processing by writing this so I can watch the rest of the video. The social feedback loop is at the heart of it, isn’t it? That’s what made me stop the video…oh wow, when you said that I realized that it’s such a deeply vulnerable need. You are probably about to say it, that empathic part of our nature is also our downfall because it makes us people pleasers for the positive feedback. Oh gees, it’s what makes us so attractive to narcissists. Ah and that facade of logic, the protective wall of reason. I’m so well prepared with social/logical information that I step into social leadership by default be it in my marriage or a larger group, waiting for someone else who knows more/is better to take over which, in hindsight, caused me to fall into enabler patterns. I really like the connection you make between taking responsibility and being empathetic. Because it is so spot on.I often wind up being the unwilling group leader (hence when a compromise needs to take place to choose lets say a restaurant).You have some people that say oh it doesn't matter, and it doesn't (if i believe you when you say it, don't come nagging afterwards, because you will make me feel super lousy). Then you have those that say it doesn't matter, but you can see it does matter.If we choose a place without consulting these people and kind of pushing them to state a preference I feel very..anxious.Because they are oozing emotion.I often feel like a radio receiver that picks up all the signals sent out by others. Maybe it's the adhd though.They ooze annoyance of not daring to state a preference, so I kind of..pull it out by offering a plethora of suggestions. Only when we achieve a reasonable amount of people that made a choice will I feel "at ease" with the group dynamic. Like someone in the comments, I'm super sensitive to passive aggresiveness, even when people think they are not being agressive, they kinda are.

@@CognitivePersonalityTheory Oh I don't take decisions in the place of others. But it's more out of a..I want people to choose for themselves.I don't mind pushing people into taking a descision vs inaction and providing info ,basically be an agitator. And I will try to convince others of my preference, but they need to want it as well. I want them to feel like they are content with their choice, or it will disrupt harmony.If someone says "ok we'll go there because you like it", I'm seldom ok with that. The objective determinable concensus is the ultimate goal.It leaves the least possibility for annoyed people afterwards, or people feeling like their decision was not taken into account. And it provides.. justification should that situation arise anyway. It's as you mentioned, a framework. I am very aware of who in the group will act a certain way if a certain thing is said,and I always try to manage it to make everything as pleasant as possible for people. Not meaning I let myself be used because I will call out someone that is purposefully disturbing the harmony.It led me to believe I was not a "thinker" type for a long time, because I feel so much and am so sensitive to disharmony. But there is that.."cold streak" that I think allows me to actually act in a way that sometimes goes against harmony..to restore it. if that makes sense.

I'm an emotionally damaged ENTP and I've been deeply hurt in past relationships. My parents hurt me, relationships with women have been a disaster and I've had friends screw me over. So I'm automatically very verbally combative and skeptical in life now and have been for years. But I'm a very sensitive person under my hard stubborn exterior. I live alone and I've become comfortable in my own surroundings by myself because I don't have to conform to anyone elses standards. I'm good at interacting with people on a social level where I can be free to express myself and come and go as I like. But because I generally don't believe I can live up to other peoples expectations, I have a lot of anxiety when it comes to having to do things for other people, especially in a work environment. And I need a lot positive feedback about what I'm doing from managers to give me the confidence to continue with what I'm doing. I'm always late and getting myself up early and focused into my work can be utter torture for me. It makes me very unhappy to have to live like this tbh. I don't fit in with what society expects. But equally I get very frustrated with other people who say or do things which goes against what I believe is logic or that doesn't make sense and I end up freaking out about it, especially in the work environment because I can't stand having to play a guessing game about what people meant or why people did something a certain way that I don't understand.

I have always seen his empathic gifts, his amazing ability to engage almost anyone, and his tendency to take too much responsibility for other’s feelings. However, as you explained, he is misunderstood as actually lacking empathy and integrity. His father, stepmother and certain teachers have criticized him for his lack of care/regard for others. I see he feels deeply hurt and unseen when this happens. But because he is reluctant to show vulnerability, this reinforces their opinion that he is self-centered and lacks regard for others. Needing to be alone to do my hobbies and learn new skills: 100% accurate. In fact, if I don't do those things, I end up annoyed that I've wasted my alone time. Taking responsibility for other people's feelings... ehhhhhh, depends entirely on the context. With friends, sure, I really like seeing them happy, seeing them enjoy the story I'm telling them, etc. That is a social situation, ie, socialising and feeling great is the whole point of it. But when there's a decision to be made, especially if the people involved are just colleagues or some other randos, then it's Ti before Fe, and if the decision is one they don't like, they can either listen to the logical explanation or cry on their own time. Seems uncaring, but... well it is uncaring, but only when it makes sense to not care. Know what I mean? When I'm truly empathetic is when people have genuine needs that have nothing to do with feelings. Homeless people, abused people, abused animals, all have a legitimate need to escape their situation. What makes sense to me is supporting organisations that give the homeless the skills and mindset to rejoin society, not running around telling homeless people, "You're special, sweetie!" The RU-vid observation - ahhh, that's my secret fantasy. But it goes against my abhorrence of celebrity status and people knowing my personal stuff. So I'm in secret limbo about that. Well, I've rambled, which I've noticed seems to be a very xNxx thing to do online, so if you're a fellow N, hello! Welcome to my blog, which I publish entirely in other people's comment sections.

Happy to read your blog my fellow N! Yes, when there's a decision to be made the ENTP will often (though certainly not always) shut down the axis between Fe and Ti and essentially communicate Ti with Ne-Te. The primary utility of the type, in most instances, is social, and therefore the playground tends to be one of externalised emotions :) I have a video exploring different forms of empathy! Many ENTPs will experience Mirror Empathy and, for so long as the person is within their locus of control, so they very much feel the emotional harmony of a social situation. The Relational Empathy component tends to be more unconscious in an ENTP, but still present, though I would say the humanistically-informed logic you're describing may be more of a Ti rationalisation of Fe data than empathy per se.
@AlextheENTP
@AlextheENTP 4 года назад
@@CognitivePersonalityTheory "playground... externalised emotions". Yes, that's what shakes many people. That we're perfectly happy to _show_ emotion, but don't employ it as the primary advisor for decision making. Living in a majority feeling-deciding world, people just expect that to be how a "decent person" functions, and they're often shocked when our "robotic" side is revealed. While I agree with you that absolutely anyone enduring past their threshold of hurt or betrayal is likely to fall into their type's weaknesses, I disagree that ENTPs are robotic for this reason. We're NTs, robotic is just part of the package. Yes, we're the most playful and emotionally expressive of the robots, but we're still robots. There's literally nothing wrong with that. Your last paragraph is a bit jargony for me to answer right now, so I'll try to check out your forms of empathy video and maybe ramble in that comment section too. I'm trying to understand what you mean by my description of empathy not really being empathy at all? Actually it sounds like you're describing... lol... a robot doing emotions. Which is genuinely hilarious if that's what you're saying. Alright, enough of my meaningless opinions for now. Thank you for taking the time to reply to me. I've enjoyed our conversation, and just for the sake of Poe's Law + possible thinker-feeler misunderstandings, everything I've said has been friendly, not fighty 👍. Signed, Cyborg 009.

This resonated so deeply that it almost hurt to listen to. Something I needed to hear, though, so thank you for your insight! I was struggling to reconcile my being an ENTP with my (frequently crippling) empathy, but this gave me a new angle to see how they're really connected.

Thank you for this video! An ENTP female here and been told on numerous occasions that I am cold and do not provide this constant confirmation of my feelings, which I find very upsetting. I go out of my way for people to have "the experience" for the lack of better words, surprising when they least expect it with something I know they will enjoy. Your "mask wearing" explanation is eye opening and finally explains what I been struggling to understand about myself for many years!

My best friends' brother is an ENTP, he definitely likes debating, but he is very respectful about it, empathetic, emotionally smart and works as a social worker. I'm an INFP and I've never felt anything but comfortable around him. He's also very entertaining but used to be a quiet child.

This is an incredibly accurate account of an ENTP's experience. I'm an ENTP who lived with an INFJ friend for years. You seem to understand both types very well. The great thing about INFJs in my opinion is that I don't have to hold back my ENTP-ness (heh) around them. They can, in reasonable doses, handle the intense social experience an ENTP will demand of them. Very thought-provoking video. Thanks for taking the time to make it.

Thank you! Something that gets overlooked about INFJs is our capacity for intense Se-Fe experience - it definitely blends well with an ENTP-ness dynamic ;)

This is brilliant, thank you. I am a 31 year old ENTP man that is easily moved to tears, and this is the first I’ve heard this nuance on describing ENTP. Addition 10 mins into the video: LOL I am currently on a binge tear of watching serial killer content and have that lurking question always. It’s funny to hear it described so acutely. It’s like the old saying “if you are wondering if you are crazy, you’re not crazy yet because crazy people don’t know they’re crazy” Edit 2: Wow. The bite sized chunks of introverted thinking is EXACTLY it. My girlfriend is a real INFJ and I think that’s why she likes me and gets my humor

Very appreciative of your thoughts, perspectives, explanations and understanding regarding ENTPs - I've been conflicted over being typed as an ENTP when often pages and some people consider ENTPs to be insensitive and incapable of caring about others emotions as well as confusion over my love of being around people but requiring periods alone with my thoughts, making me ponder whether I may be considered an introvert. Thanks for helping to clear up some misunderstandings regarding the type:) Can't believe this video has been out 6 months and I've only just watched it.

4:36: Omg, you just described my childhood exactly as I experienced it. I was a lonwr, imaginative, emotional and solitary. Then when I reached adolescence I completely switched. I became extroverted, assertive and somewhat fearless. The change was so rapid and apparent that my morher recounted it to people until I was in my 40's. She'd say, "can you believe this child was so shy wouldn't say "boo" to anyone and hid behind me whenever we encountered a new person/ situation until she was 13 (yrs old)? Then, Wham!! She became this outgoing person literally overnight". Until this day I'm not sure who was more shocked by my metamorphosis, my mom or me

Wow. Excellent video, man. The presentation is phenomenal, and this is exactly the kind of stereotype-busting that's needed re: ENTPs. I'm an ENTP, but people often suspect I am an INFJ. For the longest time, I thought that I was an INTP; I couldn't stand the 'image' of ENTPs and felt that it was so far from my own self-perception. If I'd seen something like this years ago, my typing journey might have been easier.

I'm in a facebook group "True entp" , it was a getaway from the entp main group that is full of trolly people feeling they need to adhere to the stereotypical entp image.It's awfull. Every once in a while we get some in our group,and they choose not to abide to the rules. Claiming, ENTP's don't do rules :D They don't last long. There I really found a cool spot of likeminded people, like finding your tribe.It was a magnificent experience.

one addition since you describe young entps... Id say they are maybe as you say appearing introverted but!!! they are very curious and inquisitive and might ask a lot of questions and are not really quiet probably. Alonetime... yes, because relations are difficult to process, one cannot do that all the time. But lot of intake by reading or online and communicating there. Also thank you for mentioning guilt/responsibility for the social outcome, spot on for me. Also masks.. yes often misunderstood. Everything is so true, very well done!

Cognitive Personality Theory Im so impressed! How could you figure this out in such a precision? the not showing ones vulnerability (instead joking, lighten the mood, ...) Noone talks about that but its my life. Theres a big fat stop sign when its about showing weakness/vulnerability. Usually the Entp is being seen as unfeeling not vulnerable but feelings can be difficult to process and make us vulnerable because we are not so skilled in the area of Fi.

This is far beyond hitting straight on. Oh my goodness thank you 😭🤍 Honestly have been searching for more Fe explanation, it’s lacking because that side is like you said, so far buried because the entp mostly likely suffered emotional trauma from caring so deeply and getting hurt that they are more seen as defensive and cold, when actually it just shows how deeply they actually feel! Brilliant video

@@CognitivePersonalityTheory I'm actually watching this video again! 😍 For many years I suppressed my Fe partly due to being repeatedly hurt because of my marriage to a covert narcissist as well as due to him forcefully isolating me from family and friends. As u can imagine this caused me severe depression to the point of near suicide but fortunately those days are over. I can definitely see why an entp might under such circumstances display sociopathic behavior and had I not been responsible for the welfare of my children I likely too would have done a few crazy things. 😅 I can also understand how someone having acquired an inordinate amount of wounds in their lives could become narcissistic and attention seeking and develop entitlement syndrome. In fact I suffered from the entitlement until I read a book on it and realised I was playing the victim and that snapped me out of it really quickly. I refuse to become a burden to someone else because i haven't developed enough self awareness to rise above my circumstances/past. I have also been accused of being inauthentic when in social situations though I don't consider it being so. I think of myself as being multifaceted and depending on which group I'm with or which social situation I'm in a certain facet will then come to light. In my mind I'm connecting with people on a level that they are comfortable with and that allows for an enjoyable experience for all, especially since I have a very extensive range of interests. And yes! As a child/teen I was very introverted, spending most of my reading about my interests and writing stories or doing art and performing on stage. I was very quite at home but when in social situations rather boisterous and engaging which I supposed made me seem all the more fake to some haha! I have also often been accused of giving unsolicited advice. It's become a family joke now even though I don't do it anymore but generally when I am unable to help someone or fix a situation I feel 'useless'. When I am in introvert mode I'm usually learning something or doing some writing/reading. I cannot sit and do nothing! If I don't have some sort of creative outlet or means to sate my random bursts of curiosity I get extremely frustrated. Most of the time I forget to eat and don't even know I'm tired until I start to pass out while doing something because my quiet time is still productive time. I often wish I didn't need sleep/food/etc lol I don't think of myself as extremely scientifically inclined. Though I do enjoy science and experimenting I'm also only extremely stubborn if there are clear facts to back my claims up and the person trying to dissuade me has no proof. I'm rather open minded and if someone can offer me better more efficient theories/opinions/ideas I might change my point of view. As for the introverted intuition and introverted feeling I have in this last year I would say I have definitely ignored my need to make people happy and affirmation seeking tendencies in lieu of what I know is best for me and my children. Though it's very hard to do sometimes though I realised I have to live with myself and my choices, not other people, and thus I should do what makes sense to me for me and mine. Lmao I think I will stop this essay here since this is more than enough unnecessary information! Thank you again for your wonderful videos! I will keep on watching ❤️

The video I've been waiting for. Thanks so much for the fantastic video! On a side note, how have gotten such in-depth knowledge of other types minds? I can assuredly confirm these theories when comparing them to myself and another ENTP friend I have, however considering you are an INFJ, it's boggling to see you able to speak such truthful words without being an ENTP yourself.
