Yep, spent 3 hours there when visiting my GF who lives on the island!!! Really great place. In fact loved it so much we, my daughter and I, came back another day and stayed another 3.5 hours!!!! 😆

I'd like to put this into a bit of perspective: as stated at 2:20, cats were originally introduced to Lanai by humans. It's possible that the people on those "passing ships" did not know or understand (or care about) the inevitable consequences to native bird species when leaving cats on the island. Although considered an "invasive species" (2:50), the cats did not "invade" the island, humans brought them there: the situation was human-generated. As is often (usually?) the case, environmental problems can be traced back to humans. In fact, humans are at the top of the list of "invasive species". Our species disrupts the natural ecology of the entire planet in ways that seem increasingly unlikely to repair…

They really should make a hard, island-wide effort to trap as many ferals as possible in the shortest amount of time possible. When it comes to the extinction of a native species, the individual lives of animals in a feral (non-native but prolific) species do not matter. I would rather see all of the cats on that island put down than see those native island species go extinct because of the cats. I know that sounds cruel to the cats but again, I don't look at the individuals in this type of situation. I see "feral" and I see "native" and if the only way to guarantee the survival of the native is to wipe out the feral, then that's what should be done. It's wonderful that these people are doing what they are doing so that everyone wins. But the island government needs to make a concerted effort to get rid of the ferals outside of that sanctuary once and for all, whether that means catching them and letting them live at this sanctuary or just humanely euthanizing them. Those rare birds (and doubtless other species that are negatively affected by the cats) are more important than a species that has pretty much taken over the world and cause the endangerment and extinction of countless native species all over the world. And this is coming from someone who loves all animals. You have to see the big picture and think of the greater good in order to truely do the most good.

As someone who doesn't like cats. I find this place disgusting probably smells like a dirty kitty litter box for miles.
