My parked car was written off by a teenager in a stolen car years ago (as were a number of others). I was assured by my insurance that the car owner's insurance company would cover it. Needless to say, they didn't, so even though it wasn't my fault, I lost my no claims bonus and my insurance premiums increased substantially for the next five years or so 😕

Go out into some narrow country lanes in the middle of nowhere and you will see a few give way lines the full width of the narrow two way road. Somewhat unusual in a built up area. Good video!

There's one literally 2 mins down the lane from the village I've lived in for over 40 years and I'd never even noticed, or to be honest even considered that two broken lines all the way across the junction had any significance. It is probably marked that way because the road narrows. Every day is a school day as they say.

You see those full-width double broken lines in the countryside, particularly where an angled junction has had another little road put in to make turning easier. The type that often have a little grass triangle in the middle. I've seen people drive past and make the really difficult turn into the 'main' road.

Those markings give me pause to look for 'no entry' signs that I might have missed, but I didn't appreciate the no-one has priority message they convey - to be honest, I always prepare to give way to those already on the road into which I'm turning. Maybe it's living where narrow lanes (and large agricultural vehicles) are the norm. This sometimes upsets drivers behind, but I don't see why I should barge into a difficult situation to compensate for their lack of attention.

Nice video from the "only on Ashley Neal" drawer, and a really useful obscure learning point. I paused it to check Streetview and the entry you passed is a hairpin turn which would probably catch many drivers out; anyone making it would need to practically stop to observe what's coming, as the view won't be clear until very late. The verbalised holding back from 1:18 is a great bonus, since I've had arguments with people who argue that the moment any driver or cyclist passing parked vehicles on their side of the road sees an oncoming vehicle, they should be looking for any gap to dive into and give way. The gap you reached at 1:35 would be easily big enough for these nitpickers, according to whom you'd be entitled or even duty-bound to proceed, taking your priority and forcing the van driver essentially to parallel park - all they need, with an 80-150-drop round. On a half mile-long street, that's fair enough and crucially, serves best flow - like what you did by just waiting. Cheers.

Looking at the parked cars can help. If the locals all face one way, it may be a one-way road. One car facing the other way could just be one driver who doesn't care, but if several face the other way, it is usually safe to assume a two-way road. There are however, instances where it is always easier to travel one way, so seeing all cars facing one way may cause concern if you are travelling against the 'flow'.

Classic case of learning something new every day. I did notice the lack of no-entry signs, but I would never have guessed that meant it was two-way. I've always got the sat nav going when I'm driving somewhere is don't know, so its stopped thinking about stuff like this, not good that.

A while back I nearly went down a road like this which did turn out to be one-way (not my way!). It was originally two-way, and I'd used it a few times before. However, since it was changed to one way, the giveway markings were a bit of a mess, and more importantly the no-entry signs were set so far back that you couldn't see them until you were right by the road. There was also a lack on no-turn signs on the main road. I only realised when i started to turn in and an on-coming car was flashing vigourously (with his lights!) at me. I'm not sure if they've improved the signage since, but it was easy to miss.

There are two No Entry signs close to the junction, but one set back a lot further than the other, which is often not seen from the junction 🫨. I'd have gone straight past that road end thinking it was no entry. On balance that may be the safest thing to do given how narrow the street is. If it was exit only, as well as No Entry signs, I guess there would also be advance signs for No Left Turn (in Ash's direction of travel on the main road) and No Right Turn on the opposite approach.

Yeah, while it may not "legally" be one-way, it's effectively designed to be one imo, with how it's laid out and how sharp the turn would've been. Add to that how frequently signs are either missing or incorrect...

We have a minor road that joins a major road at around 45deg. There is a small connector strip that has double broken lines and this connector road.strip is only used for traffic, where to use the minor road would need a hairpin turn. It is therefore obvious that the left turn into the minor road is allowed over the 'give way' lines. I have noticed that occurs surprising frequently in our County.

Throw in some Godcake (green/grass island) junctions with similar paint and add a painted Give Way triangle and watch how people get very confused about whether they are allowed to enter. They can enter, but it's not always a good idea. Out in the sticks there's loads of these.

I remember a "Yellow Pages" advert from the 1980s. A father buys his son a new bike which he'd saved up for with a "razor sharp" saddle. In the closing scene the young boy starts to ride his new bike up a side street and I noticed the whole entrance to the street had hazard lines. I thought he was going up a one way street the wrong way! but my dad pointed out that, that doesn't always mean its a one way.The width of the road might not be wide enough to have such markings on just the one side so for practical reasons they may span the whole entrance/exit of the side road.

Because of how narrow the road is the double broken white line across the full width of the road is saying to vehicles in both directions nobody has priority, that makes complete sense as if there was a single broken white line it gives you the priority to turn in so because it’s not a single broken white line it’s saying to you that you don’t have priority and due to the narrowness of the road you have to give way, thank you so much Ashley mate, I learn so much from you! 🙃 There’s a very strange junction just down the road here from where I live, there’s a double broken white line across the full width of the road but it’s definitely two-way and as are no no-entry signs and there are no one-way signs and there’s a right turn box to sit and wait in if you’re turning right from the main road into the side road, the road is at a very odd angle, the double broken white lines literally go from north to south and in the middle there is a little section of 2 chevron road markings bordered by solid white lines, as per Highway Code rule 130, you must not enter the area except for in an emergency, they’ve put down the wrong road markings though, chevrons mean that traffic will be passing both sides of the markings going in the same direction, as it’s two-way there should be hatched markings, hatched markings means that traffic will be passing both sides of the markings going in opposing directions.

"You can't hit anyone when you're stopped" reminds me of an occasion in teh Lake District where someone came down on a single track road even though they had a passing place by them and claimed I had hit them. When the BMW driver claimed I had hit them, I asked how I could have managed that since I had my parking brake on. I got myself as far to the left as possible beyond the point where parking sensors were telling me I was going to crash and burn and my wing mirror was literally mm from a solid wall and then put my parking brake on. The guy's mother in law also got out and screamed at me. They were goading me to get out of the car, but I stayed where I was, and they drive off. They also tried to put a claim in. A very small part of my then Mercedes E class saloon had the tiniest amount of paint taken from it, but they had put a line down the side of their car. All because they thought they were too precious to wait in the passing place they were right by. They continued to claim that I had hit them - but I was stationary. Stationary objects don't hit anything.

There's a minimum road width to have a split giveaway road marking, I believe 4.5m but can't quite recall, otherwise having a double give way is preferred (least from Devon county council highways design guide)

It's when the overall width of the road is less than 5.5m. The give way line can't be shorter than 2.75m, so less than 5.5m width needs a give way line across the full width. Traffic Signs Manual - Chapter 3 - Regulatory Signs paragraph 3.2.3

It's not a roundabout, though, it's just a weird junction.

Many drivers and even many driving instructors think that if there are double broken give way lines across the entire width of the road that it means one-way or exit only, I also thought it meant one-way or exit only until I was corrected by Conquer Driving’s video, I even corrected driving instructor Zondo driving, it’s a very common misconception but it’s actually pretty simple, you just have to remember that a road is designed to be two-way, if a road is one-way there will be a no-entry sign or a one-way sign or no- entry written on the road or one-way written on the road with arrows, many of these two-way roads with the double broken give way lines across the full width of it are very narrow, just remember Highway Code rule 102, always give way if it can help to avoid an accident.

One of my ex pupils told me about coming up a road and the business owners at the top coming down and shouting at her instructor that the road was one way. The section of the road she was on is 2 way, but further down it turns into a one way, so her instructor was correct, but how long had the people been running a business on a 2 way road, believing it to be one way? "You can't hit anyone if you've stopped." On narrow roads I point this out fairly regularly, but slightly different wording.
@shm5547

1:16 now I don't think you have priority at all in this situation. The van had begun passing the parked vehicles before you had turned into the road. At this point, it's just a narrow section of road and the white van was there first.
@ChrisBrown-px1oy
@ChrisBrown-px1oy 3 месяца назад
I've crossed swords not only with people who would argue that he does have priority, but one who says it's incumbent on the user with priority to assess the gaps in the parked cars ahead of the van, and go ahead and take it if he judges that the van could fit into one. Some of them just wanted to berate a cyclist, but some were deadly serious. As if there are not enough daily challenges in road use. I realised that even if they were technically correct, I didn't care - there's no way I'm barging into that space and bringing both or all of us to a standstill.

@shm5547
@shm5547 3 месяца назад
@@user-mv5zt8qd9l now that is the misconception, that the mere presence of parked vehicles on the 'other side' means you should have priority. There isn't a side in this scenario, effectively the parked cars create a narrow section of road, just like a single track lane in the countryside. The Highway Code says you should give way _before_ overtaking an obstruction on your side of the road. Once you have begun that manoeuvre and are established in the road narrowing, you no longer need to give way. Effectively, nobody has priority, just like a single track road.

Many one way streets will have traffic calming bumps, especially close to junctions or along heavily residential streets to help keep pedestrians safe 👍 As for the give way line, don’t think I have ever seen than on a two way road. The bit about the speed bumps (it's clearest @ 4:31) is that they have the triangular warning marks (diagram 1062 in the traffic signs regulations) _only_ on the approach side facing traffic. I'm quite confused about the interpretation of the single/double broken white lines. If it's OK for a driver to go in over the double broken white lines, why is 'cutting the corner on a right turn' a serious / dangerous driving fault? I even had a girl failed her driving test as the arrow in the turning box pointing towards over double broken white lines (nearside to nearside was encouraged in a junction suited better to offside to offside). Following the arrow over the double broken white lines resulted in a test fail, even though no vehicle was coming out.
