+Micah Newman I would name her Inky! Or Pinky! Or Blinky! Or Clyde! or Sue! :P Basically any of the names of the ghosts from Pac-man ... because this is what this exactly what this tiny cute octopus reminds looks like!
"See this tentacle? it's actually shorter than all my other tentacles, but you can't really tell, especially when I twirl them like this." -Pearl, Finding Nemo
TheStepmonkey the pink flapjack's scientific name is "Opisthoteuthis californiana", so no, it's not the same species as this new "adorabilis" (they are just recently starting to think of a name, after all) :0
2:55 is such a cute moment, especially when the octo bumps against the container, it’s also a bit sad seeing him get trapped though, hopefully we learn more about them 👍🏾
Larger octopods can take 4 1/2 years, yes, years, to hatch. Meanwhile the mother stays with them, not eating. If these take just as long they should have hatched by now, but I did a little googling and couldn't find anything.
@@veramae4098 Wow, indeed a lengthy amount of time. I was aware that dogs take only six months while scorpions take exactly twice as long as humans. :)
I live in the Monterey bay area and am looking to see if MBARI accepts volunteers, even if its just cleaning or replacing filters for the tanks. I'll come back here once I've looked into things.
It's strange that a channel with such high quality content only has around 30k subscribers, you guys deserve waaaaaaay more. I am always glad to see a new scifri video in my sub feed :D PS: opistoteuthis adorabilis sounds perfect :3
Norm Conel Science Friday is a radio program on NPR affiliated with PRI. It started in 1991 and I'm sure has many times this subscriber amount offline- although, I haven't gathered the data. :p Tune a radio to NPR on a friday and you'll hear loads of good stuff like this or PRI has a phone app with all the shows archived, as well as they are online.
Maybe adding try "pressure" to the eggs? Since its a deep sea creature, and the eggs fall to the bottom, maybe depth pressure will trigger some hormone and begin development?? High pressure may be a more suitable environment.
Mandelson Fleurival They just take years to grow because the cold slows the metabolism, plus the octopuses emerge as miniature versions of the adults rather than as less developed larvae as with other octopus species to give the young an advantage.
That's an amazingly long time from eggs being laid to being hatched. Thankfully the little guys aren't considered a profitable commercial fish or much like the orange roughy, they'd be nearly extinct in next to no time at all. Luckily, many people end not to enjoy eating such cute little animals so let's hope they will continue to live long and happy lives in the deep dark and cold waters in the depths of the ocean.
Khuratokh Agreed, it is a horrible and destructive method that shouldn't be allowed anywhere. Sad thing is despite knowing how destructive it is nobody seems to be effectively reducing and preventing it at the legislative level. It's truly amazing to me how bad we have to screw something up before we actually take action.
To clarify, the specimen being dissected in the video has been dead since 1990. Even the eggs featured on screen were taken from a deceased specimens ovaries. Rest easy internet; no animals were harmed in the making of this video.
its correct name would be Octopus Veneranilis (adorable octopus) but actual adora can mean worshipping and adore too....it would mean an to be adored octobus.....
Always interesting in how scientist (who i have the greatest respect for) always say in order to understand this eco system and make/keep it healthy we need to understand how it works. I say we all need to understand that were polluting all eco systems period. We need to investigate ourselves and come up with a solution for that! Great work though keep it up!
We don't help it work because it works. They get paid to be curious. They aren't helping. Actually pesticides are damaging because of how dangerous they can be for bees.
Agreed. Please don't litter or pick up litter plastic cigarette butts u see. Don't let dogs poop on the beach or chase birds they are feeding and resting. Vote for candidates that support ocean conservation NOT sea drilling and mining! More protected marine areas no fishing trawling. Thank you for reading.
The name dumbo octopuses refers to a group of octopus species which share certain characteristics, like the fins above the eyes, the very short arms and the webs that join the arms. They all live in the deep ocean. The little guy featured in this video is one of the species in this group.
OMG So Cute!!!!!! I Just Went Into My Old Sea Animal Plushies and I Found My Favorite Deep Sea Octopus Plush And The Looked At This Video Again And My Octopus Plush Was The Opisthoteuthis Adorabilis!!!!!!! I'm so excited and happy that I have a little plush of these cuties!!!!! 😊. But on the down side I have a fever......😓
thank u fr sharing this heart-warming story ..... they are indeed absolutely cute ... am sharing this in groups on fb n on my tl.... kudos to ur team...... cant wait to see d eggs hatched.....
Oh! this newly discovered creature is soooo cute, so let's disect them and take them away from their homes and make experiments with babies! Maybe, that's what aliens think of us too. :P
Music is just a distraction from the fact that a living creatures are subjected to painful death in the name of "research science". All God's creations in any physical form, DO feel pain.
Scientific study, you dip. Unless you'd rather all those cute little octopusses all die from humans fucking up the ocean rather than a few individuals being captured and studied so that we can better keep the other cute animals of its species alive.
Wake-up! These, by the way highly intelligent creatures, were permanently removed from their home environment and slowly tortured to death, all in the name of "research science". Every God's creations in any physical form, DOES feel pain!........ And don't think anesthesia was applied.
cute cephalopod. I used to own a girl Octopus hummelincki....she was the best ever! Sad they only live 2 years tops like most cephalopods from warmer temps.
I know this is an odd comment but all I could think of while looking at the chibi octopus was Blooky/Napstablook from Undertale. If he was a sea creature instead of a ghost he'd likely be this adorable thing.
