Great pair of videos. I appreciate your ability to make yet another video on the same topic interesting. I really mean that! It's hard not to sound sarcastic typing, but i've really enjoyed every single one of the isopath videos.
@pocket83squared

Nice to hear that. I think I get away with it because of the channel's theme. It's more about those little inventive things, and the process itself, and not so much about the object. I mean, it is- but the end thing is really just a McGuffin. The proof is in the pudding. I don't like the idea of 10 minute vids just to maximize views.

"...the process itself, and not so much about the object..." Exactly what I told my wife when she was disappointed that your last 2 videos were about a "board game" (Witch were obviously not).

Just the fact that putting the lid on acts as a way to "save" your game made it well worth the effort. Very cool.

Cool. I'm not really a board game person, but I enjoy these videos anyway. It's not really about _what_ people make that I like seeing, it's about how they make it. How they approach the fabrication of multiple identical pieces, for example. Everybody's got a slightly different way of thinking about design and how they bring it to life, and I find that fascinating.

It was most likely covered in the first video but my jaw dropped at how elegantly your board fit inside of the upturned lid. And jewel marking the blues base is small but it is such a amazing touch. Hands down your videos are amazing and I hope you know how much everyone appreciates these masterpieces.

This project has turned into quite the video series; a lot of time has gone into this. I love the iterations and versions that have come out of it. I built one as a gift for my brother a few months ago. I used walnut for the tiles and other hardwoods for everything else. He loves it. Thank you, Mr. 83²!!!

I've been trying to find the reason why I like your videos so much and I think I finally put it together. Your commentary on the projects is more than a simple single use quote and can normally be applied to many other circumstances. These videos help to inspire thought and creativity and for that I thank you.

I used Sherwin Williams paint stain on an old trunk. Guy at store had a card with common stain colors but said he could custom mix any color like regular paint. First time I used it. Not really a paint and not really a stain. Very pleased with the results.

Great job. The patience and precision is impressive. The multi-function aspect of the lid is really neat. It might be a good idea to put a softer material in each hole of the lid to prevent scratching, and to reduce noise. Also, I like the cylinder to identify teams, but I think it should be on the board itself.

Thanks a bunch. The main series was supposed to include three more videos: one about making a solid-surface board, one about making stones (from actual stones), and one that's about how to play. We ended up moving before I could finish the series, but I'll start it up again eventually. There are printable rule sheets and everything, and now there are a bunch of online versions of Iso-path. So I hope you give it a play and enjoy it!

Everytime I watch your videos, you get really deep in your thinking. I learn stuff from all of them. I didn't pay attention in school but I do when listening to you explain why you do things the way you do. A lot of other you tubbers explain how to do stuff but you actually go into depth as to why. I like that. My question is when are you going to start selling these as custom made? Just kidding. I think I would have a better time making it myself so I can go, "Oh that's what he meant when he said this or that". Anyway, thanks for all the videos and info. Have a great day!!!

Looks great! First thought: when the lid is used as a base marker or stand, you lose the purpose of the felt feet on the base, and there is no longer anything protecting the surface the game is resting on. To get around this, you could inlay some felt on the lid for both cushioning and decoration. Example: routing a small channel 0.5" from the edge to fill with felt. You could even go so far as inlaying the word "Iso-path".

I didn't know what made all your videos so interesting and informative to watch until I saw this one. I (think) I have finally realized the reason I find your videos so interesting is because of all the little tips and tid-bits you always share as if each individual from your audience was in an apprenticeship under you. Every single video you always surprise me with curious little bits of knowledge or creative ways of doing things that I might not have though of and I absolutely love that. And that is one of the things I was able to characterize haha. I'll be a lifelong follower of your work and videos because they are always so well done while retaining an authenticity as if you were my older brother or dad teaching me all you have learned!

my thoughts? it is gorgeous and very well designed. The attention to detail is what makes it so special. I would probably buy the game-I"m a maker but I play in inks, pains and dyes on paper and thread on fabric so buy it is-. just so I could put the hexagons into and out of the board. Just watching it is so satisfying.

@pocket83squared

It's actually a very safe tool. And so useful! The thing that's dangerous there is the glass splinters, but the blade is virtually impossible to get hurt from. It requires pressure, so it will feel HOT long before it cuts you. Think of it like this: you use a burner on a stove often enough, right? Are you anxious around the kitchen? Eventually it just becomes natural to not press your hands against certain places. Still, I can see how it _looks_ intimidating though.
@TheUnlocked
@TheUnlocked 6 лет назад
Is the blade just dulled? How does it work?
@VViproz
@VViproz 6 лет назад
Unlocked The blade is an abrasive diamond blade most likely so it kind of works like sandpaper or like a file. You really can't cut yourself with theses tools so even when you transform it in a power tool it's still pretty safe

Lol I didn't realize how horrifying that scene would look to anyone unfamiliar with tile or lapidary saws. I want to make a board like this. Haven't even seen the video on how to play yet ;-) It involves a lot of different techniques and you even shows how to make the tools DYI. And a part from everyones favourite sanding, none of techniques is 100 hours of tedious work. (cutting and sanding and glueing a segmented bowl/vase come to mind) As others have mentioned; placing jewel/indicator on the board will make it easier to remember where the blue starts. Unless it is a given, when you know how to play (really have to watch that video about how to play) And I second/third/infinity-th the idea with magnets to keep the lid and base together. I am pretty sure you can figure out a clever way to place the magnets so they are hidden. I can only come up with hiding them under a thin piece of dowel..

You never cease to amaze. There is one thing and I’m sure you’ve thought of it: the lid will not work as designed while there are tiles stacked. I can’t think of a solution for that problem right now. What were some of the ideas you explored that didn’t work out to address the issue?

pocket83² the 3rd player stays on the 0 plain I imagine? I just introduced the game to my brother and he really enjoys it as well. We could give 3 player a try.
@pocket83
@pocket83 6 лет назад
Yep. It gets some good laughs, because two of the players can gang up against the third. The neutral (0) player has a movement advantage, though- so balance it by giving that player less pieces. Score it by captured pieces. If you capture a base, you get that base's active stones/pieces. Last player standing gets an additional point.

OK, one thought on the jewel. As you have the place-holders built in, I would think you'd want the jewel on the game board itself so there isn't any doubt, when the game is resumed, as to which home base is where. Also, perhaps a movable jewel that gets placed in the position of the player who will take the first turn after resumption of the game? This way, if the game is "suspended" for several days, you can just get right to it. Also, I've seen a few different versions that you've made, with the thicker tile pieces, I like how the vertical dimension is emphasized.

2 things. The first being that while talking about the marker you made for the blue base you mentioned playing with 3 players. How would that work? Wouldn't the lid not work for saving your place if any of the tiles were raised?

How well are the tiles and glass stones preserved if you're halfway through a game and some of the tiles are stacked two on top of another?

Just a thought, wasn't it a bit pointless to put the felt on the bottom of the game board if you use the lid as a stand/base marker? You said the felt was to make it "furniture safe" but the lid doesn't have it. I know being a solid flat lid it's not going to take gouges out of the table, just an observation

Do you feel that your felt disc cutting clamp would be improved by replacing that clamping screw with a (luthier's) cam clamp?

Sure. But it's not really used enough to warrant the time/money/space spent.

What type of glass bead do you use as game pieces? I've seen similarly-shaped ones, but much smaller and more opaque, for decorative use.

I think they're 30 mm gems. Check the dollar stores first. It's often called "vase filler" in the craft stores, and it will be with the fake flowers.

ok, what if one player have a couple of tiles stuck on to other, and stones on top of that two stores tiles. the lid will still be able to "save" the game?

So, you put felt pads on the bottom of the board to protect furniture, but then you put the lid under it when you play, which doesn't provide any protection...

Wow, you almost got me. But actually, I've covered all of my furniture with felt. So...

I feel like magnets would have worked much better for the lid but maybe you know something I don't.

Whats the point of preserving positions of marbles on top of a single tile?
@pocket83squared

Just for storage. I made a weird explanation there for some reason.
