Colouring in Photoshop (Isometric Game Development Excercise)
Easy grids for Photoshop and Illustrator: riaanmarais.gu...
In this demonstration, I will show an easy and quick way to scan and colour your drawing in Photoshop.
First, we need to scan the drawing. I have a Canon scanner and I scan my drawings using Photoshop’s WIA support option.
Choose where you want to save the scan on your computer, then choose your DPI.
I choose 600 DPI. It is always better to scan at a higher DPI.
I used a blue pencil to do my underdrawing. Let's get rid of the blue pencil lines.
Go to Channels and select the blue channel. This will eliminate all the blue lines.
Then press Control L on the keyboard to adjust the levels for more contrast.
Now right-click on the blue channel and duplicate it. Reselect the RGB channel and go back to the layers panel.
I fill the background with white by creating a new solid colour layer of white.
Remember that we got rid of the blue lines in channels. To select this we need to Select, go down the list to Load Selection and pick theBlue Copy channel.
Then create a new solid colour layer and press Control L to invert the mask.
Or go to the menu select Image, Adjustments and then invert.
To change the line colour you can either double-click the solid fill layer’s colour swatch or you could create a new solid colour.
Hover your cursor between the drawing and the new solid colour layer while pressing a click between the layers to make the colour layer a clipping mask of the layer below it.
Now tweak the colour of the lines to your liking.
Group the drawings and name it drawing.
Lets paint. Create a new layer by pressing Shift Control and N.
Make sure the new layer is below the drawing layers.
Select a brush that has some texture to it.
I have picked the splatter 14 pixels brush from the wet media brush pack.
I also made sure that colour dynamics for the brush were enabled.
This creates varying colours with pen pressure.
It uses the foreground and background colours depending on how hard you press down on the pen.
I paint over the areas where I want the colour.
Do not worry about painting over the lines.
We will use mask layers to erase the areas where we have painted over the lines.
I create a new layer for each element I paint and then use a mask to remove the areas where I have overpainted.
I add a few curve adjustment layers to create the shades and a gradient fill layer for the background.
