How important is the height of the wire from the ground? I've read it should be about five feet and that's how I set mine up. So unless you're about seven and a half feet tall (and you might be), the vine looks to be about three or four feet from the ground. Will shorter height mean the vine will grow longer laterally or produce more grapes?
Greg Ison, I would like to prune my neglected muscadine Vines back so that I would be able to get them to make better and have a more manageable to where I can reach all the fruit. My question is, could I prune it back to get it to go down the Wire by cutting the vine off just below the wire just like a young muscadine Vine, or would I need a different technique?? Do you have any advice? Thank you.
No dont prune it below the wire .IT will take 2 years to rejuvenate an old vine . The first year cut one main arm off and let a branch from the mid crown grow out along the wire on that side to replace the cut off arm . Next year do the same with the other side.
