Join us on this lesson where you will explore the properties of isosceles triangles and the isosceles triangle theorems including the base angles theorem.
This lesson answers the questions: What is an isosceles triangle? What is the base angle theorem? What is the relationship between the sides and angles of an isosceles triangle? How can I prove that a triangle is isosceles?
Our lessons are perfect for flipped classroom math teachers and students. This lesson is aligned with the common core learning standards for math and the SAT math curriculum as well.

In your opinion, what is the defining characteristic of an isosceles triangle??

+MashUp Math In my opinion, students need to understand that relationship between the base angles and the opposite sides being congruent to each other. They need to be able to recognize one immediately.

@@allisonh2049 according to my simple understanding concept, in isosceles triangle if line segAB = line segAC, then angles B = C and if angles B = C, then lines segAB = segAC. isosceles triangle defined that "a triangle in which two sides are equal in length". SAS triangle congruence condition help us to proof a isosceles triangle, lines segAB=segAC and angles B = C. Actually, I don't know much about the properties of Isosceles triangle but I'm sharing you only my view, which I have grabbed from this video and teacher.

I think the bisecting property applies for both isosceles and equilateral triangles, it's just that the base aka hypoteneuse may be bigger or smaller

An equilateral triangle is an isosceles triangle because all the concepts of an isosceles triangle stay the same on an equilateral triangle.
@zachbabin9313

well, not always. A isos triangle can have 2 or more sides equal, so this would not always work, it would however work for equiangular triangles, because equiangular are always equilateral.

An equilateral triangle is isosceles because it has 2 congruent sides.

I think that an equilateral triangle is an isosceles triangle because an isosceles triangle is a triangle with AT LEAST two sides of equal length, which means that all three sides can be of equal length.

It's not, because equilateral triangle is equal in all 3 sides and angles (all of them are 60 degrees), whereas Congruent triangle are only has two equal sides and angles.
