Learn how to write atoms in isotope notation! In isotope notation, you can quickly show how many protons, neutrons, and electrons are in an atom. You put the atomic number, mass number, and net charge around the chemical element symbol. Isotope notation is particularly important in nuclear chemistry, because if you're doing fission, fusion, alpha decay, beta decay, positron emission, or electron capture, you want to be able to tell how many neutrons and protons are in the nucleus.

I have two videos on that. You probably want to start with "Atomic Mass: Introduction," and then move on to "How to Calculate Atomic Mass Practice Problems." And then you might want to finish up by watching "What's the Difference Between Mass Number and Atomic Mass?"

Watch "Practice Problems: Atomic Number, Mass Number, and Net Charge," and then (if you have time), check out "Isotopes and Elements Practice Problems." Good luck, and message me if you still have questions.

I have a question for you. My teacher has provided me with Oxygen with a mass number of 18 and asked me to find the electrons, protons, and neutrons for this. The electrons are 8 (atomic number) and neutrons are 18-8=10, right? I am confused now because the atomic mass of Oxygen is 16. Are the protons still 8? Or does this make a charge? Thanks!

How come the calculated mass number is different from the elements actual mass number. For all of them when you add the proton and neutrons, it gives a different number than the elements actual mass number for each atom.
@rwayle
@rwayle 5 лет назад
When the protons and neutrons come together to form a nucleus energy is released. The difference in mass is called mass defect. Also note that the number on the periodic table is NOT the mass number, it's the average mass of an atom of that element.

You’re better than all my science teachers combined, but how do you find the electrons?
@whatcolourisurBugatti
@whatcolourisurBugatti 2 года назад
I think it would be atomic number (protons) - the net charge = electrons For example, if you use magnesium as displayed in the video it would be 12 protons - (+2) = 10 electrons If the atom is neutral, there will be the same number of electrons and protons because they balance each other out. Edit: 2:52 is the timestamp where he calculates it
