How do you determine and calculate isotope abundance when you know the relative atomic mass (also known as atomic weight), as measured in amu or atomic mass numbers? Here we will go through the algebra and reasoning to figure out the amount of abundances of the isotopes, in percentages and in decimals.

Atomic mass and atomic weight are the same thing--they are both the average mass of atoms of an element. It's mass number (not to be confused with atomic mass) that is the mass of a specific isotope.

Mr. DeWitt you are literally my favorite educator on youtube. You have saved my butt countless of times. I'm currently in 10th grade and my chemistry teacher is really rude and mean so I'm pretty scared to ask her question, and even when I do she either won't answer them or answers them inadequately. I would just like to thank you for all these videos that you make. -Jack

TYLER!!!! This is so crazy that I'm finding you here talking about isotopes! I'm doing this course with Creative Live with my friend James Wedmore on RU-vid Marketing and I'm doing a keyword search on RU-vid for "abundance" because I'm coming out with a book on money in the fall...and I saw that relative abundance was a common searched term. And now here you are talking about it - but in a totally different way than I thought. Crazy freaking small world!

I would appreciate your assistance in solving this. Silicon has three stable isotopes, 28Si, 29Si and 30Si. The heaviest isotope has a percentage abundance of 3.1%. using the relative atomic mass from the periodic table, calculate the percentage abundance of the lightest isotope to one decimal place
