Advocating for Ceasefire and Ethical Journalism Amidst Allegations Against Media
In a recent News X debate addressing the Israeli government’s accusation against freelance photo-journalists affiliated with international media, alleging their foreknowledge of the October 7th Hamas attack, Sandeep Chachra, Executive Director of ActionAid Association, reiterated the urgent need for a ceasefire and the cessation of violence in Gaza. Sandeep also stressed the importance of providing humanitarian aid, aligning with the prevailing global sentiment.
Acknowledging that the issue of “embedded journalism”, the question of media ethics and the proximity of reporters to military units are all serious questions which have not been resolved despite the more than three decades of our facing these issues, Sandeep argued that if the journalists knew what was to happen, it was morally and ethically wrong to not communicate such information through journalistic channels. However, Sandeep remarked how the persecution of Julian Assange shows how widespread the desire is to keep media away from looking at war crimes. In his closing comments, Sandeep appreciated and saluted the efforts of those journalists and aid workers who report authentic information and “bringing to the world the nuances of the issue with great resilience and personal risk to themselves.”
