Israeli leaders have at times justified their attacks on the besieged strip by invoking the history of persecution of Jewish people, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calling Hamas’s attack on October 7 “the worst act of anti-Semitic violence since the Holocaust”.
How is Jewish history influencing Israel’s response in the war on Gaza?
In an UpFront special, the executive director of Jewish Voice for Peace Stefanie Fox, political analyst and commentator Omar Baddar, and professor of Holocaust and genocide studies Omer Bartov join Marc Lamont Hill to discuss both the rise of anti-Semitism and also how anti-Semitism charges are sometimes used for political ends.

As a German I have to admit that the scandal is not anti-Semitism but a deeply internalized fear of being called an anti-Semite. So, I closed many times my eyes for the situation of the Palestinians and the same time I excused Israel much more as I would have excused any other country. This is finished now, forever. As long as there is no independent Palestinian state, I am anti-Israel and do insist on the right of defense for all Palestinians with all means possible. The more I read now literature about the topic, by the way from Jews like the Holocaust survivor Israel Shahak, who wrote the book "Jewish History, Jewish Religion: The Weight of Three Thousand Years, about Jewish fundamentalism", the more I feel to wake up from a deep and unconscious sleep.

I don’t compare Oct 7 to the holocaust because then how do you explore the death and destruction Israel has given Gaza and almost 13,000 killed and many still trapped under rubble dead and alive but close to death. I haven’t heard of countdowns to get these people out or concerns about how much longer a trapped person has left. The US concerned about Ukraine and lives lost there. 500 children since Russia invaded. We got close to 13,000 dead in a city where half the population are children but no concern for them or the babies. It’s sickening!

This was a brilliant debate. It's so refreshing to hear a balanced discussion of this difficult situation. Ultimately, there is only one possible conclusion: all human lives are sacred and should be protected. Just for the record, I was born in Heliopolis, Egypt in 1961 and in 1968 my family emigrated to Australia. I still remember the Six Day War as a six year old. OCT 7 did not instigate a response The conflict started way before. In reality Palestinians have been attacked for last 75 years of their existence and that attack and the oppression has not ceased, and it has not stopped. Israel has always been the aggressor Israel has always been the instigator, the propagator. On 18 Sep 2023 before the current crisis, save the children reported that 38 Palestinian children were killed by Israeli forces.

There is no question that Israel is intentionally killing civilians. If a person points a gun at your head and pulls the trigger the law will hold that the person had the intent to kill. Israel's action is the same thing. In bombing of civilian populations Israel had the knowledge that civilians would die in large numbers. So, Israel had the intent to kill large numbers of civilians. However, the question as to why is not so easily answered. And that is an important question as to whether the killing would be part of a genocide or not. But Israel is still guilty of a war crime.

I would like to hear some discussion, similar to this, about the hate that Israeli actions are creating for the Jewish community. Undoubtedly, there were a tremendous hate towards the Nazis during WWII even if the occupied people could not display that hate openly. Even though a collective hate is never justified and should be condemned, is Israel knowingly attributing to that sentiments around the world ?

Yes They Are. Good to see this term being Analysed. Many do not want to go back beyond the seventh, and unless this is recognised, discussed and addressed, there will always be disgruntled people. Also, Amalek was Esau's Grandson. It becomes difficult to reconcile the people with the heart, mind and Spirit required to state such a claim. This Makes one consider what really occurred. The definition cannot be changed. Semetic peoples/languages include, Hamites, Shemites. Arabs, Africans, Asians. The grandfather cried out for his Blessing.

Me and marc are from the same place. Philly has a large black community, a large Muslim community that overlaps it and a large immigrant community that shares the faith. Our support for the M/E is informed by our contact with various Muslim and M/E people and the history we have as black Americans dealing with the treatment of the west. Important discussion. I've had positive relationships with Jewish and Arab/Muslim people I'm an American living in a democracy. I've been pulled into Black lives matter as well during the last few years since basically I'm not a racist. I hope that this can be understood better to create peace. I do worry about actions taken for sure the ones we can't currently see from the media blackout.

Well the IDF policy is that any hostages killed are attributed to Hamas, this mean that when they use tank-shelling to attack Hamas inside of a house, it's Hamas fault if the non-affiliated people inside dies. Just like it is the criminal/terrorists fault for hiding in the Jenin refugee camp(West Bank) if someone else dies from airstrikes made with a helicopter(I think it was 10+ killed and 70+ wounded that time). It's just ordinary tactics and they must be great because IDF is the most moral army in the world. (Some of this is sarcasm btw.)

How is what Hamas did any different to what George Washington and his band of rebels did which set alt the motion for American independence? George Washington's violent attacks on the British also led to countless civilian deaths. Why didn't he just accept British rule like Palestinians ate expected to? The only justification George Washington had for his violent rebellion against the British was simply that he didn't want to pay a tea tax to the British Crown, which is hardly a morally justifiable reason for wage a violent rebellion. The Palestinians are suffering fat more than a mere tea tax that led George Washington to revolt against British occupation but today he's regarded as a hero when he probably should have just paid the tea tax for the sake of peace

That old, "peace through power", song has proven itself a lie. The only way to peace is to not fight. "Peace through power" necessitates a dominant people and an oppressed people. The oppressed people will always, eventually, fight back. You can't oppress human beings and expect them to simply take it for more than a very short time. The only way to peace is to learn to live together. It is impossible to *force* people to adhere to...Peace Love Kindness Respect, the more you give the more you get.
