Israel has unleashed a horrific war of collective punishment against the people of Gaza, the latest in a long history of anti-Palestinian oppression. As corporate media shamelessly provides cover for what is undoubtedly a genocide unfolding in real time, the need to ground our understanding of the conflict in its proper history is more important than ever. Norman Finkelstein joins The Chris Hedges Report to discuss Israel's 17 year blockade of Gaza and its crucial significance to understanding the events of the past two weeks.

Finkelstein is a man who could've gotten with the program and lived a life of unwarranted prestige and unlimited financial comfort, like much of his ivy league contemporaries. Instead, he unwaveringly said the truth, he was fair and principled, and never relented even in the face of great personal and professional harm. This is a man who was attacked constantly and smeared in academic circles by zionist organizations to the point he was denied tenure (often considered a major achievement in an academic's life). My respect for him is boundless. I hope he can take comfort in the fact that his struggle and his sacrifice and his legacy will not be forgotten.

This interview didn't just teach me about Gaza, it changed my entire worldview. Why do genocides happen again and again? Because most people can't recognize one as it's happening. The amount of evil pervading every aspect of this modern world when you scratch below the surface, is sickening.

First of all before the attacks Israel I had no idea that it’s actually the MOST densely populated area on earth. However, as I look at the pictures of headless infants and in one instance twins who were burned alive appeared to have died holding each other 😭 I wasn’t able to look at anything else after those twins. Now then, it seems like it was announced that Israel had the right to defend himself. I know of no other country who needed to be told that! Gaza is a mess of humanity. No question. Why isn’t there something under way relocating the citizens of Gaza? It’s going to happen after the war is over anyway! Hamas has been trying to eradicate Israel for many years now. They are sworn to eradicate Israel from the face of the earth down to the last of themselves and their suicide attacks against Israel. All war has come from a last resort. But quite like WWII? Once we were attacked, what choice did we have? I’m not trying to start an argument here but I believe both sides need to be heard to make an informed decision about what is right and wrong here.

@@jaykay7180 there is no evidence of women being raped that day, none. It is an IDF claim, but lacks evidence. There were no 40 babies beheaded, that was disproved many days ago. You forget to mention the palestini women in israeli jails that are held without charge, and are being raped and tortured as a matter of fact. You demand compassien for non existing beheaded babies, yet do not mention the schildren that DID die during that incident.,, and you completely ignore the far over 2000 dead children in Gaza.. Do you think bomb shrapnel and falling buildings do not cause suffering? You never mention what Israeli children learn in school.. To hate arabs and pity secular jews. To kill arabs, and take them as slaves. Do you really mean that living a free life in a lovely city, and being born to live inside a prison makes people equal? And.. you do not mention that there was little to no firing of weapons oct 7th until IDF showed up and killed israeli and Hamas without a care of their own people. And still.. yes we do feel for those israeli who died and suffered that day.. but not more, or before those palestinians who had much worse done to them.

Rosa Parks once said: "There is only so much hurt, disappointment, and oppression one can take... The line between reason and madness grows thinner." I shared this quote today on another channel, and it's come back to haunt me. I'm trying to write about the horrific events of October 7th. Now I realize the two roads in front of me and which one to take to successfully write and get my piece published. The only road leads to a deep philosophical look at condemnation and why we must shut out the noise, condemnation and censorship, (some of my posts have suffered, for the first time ever), of when condemnation is and isn't appropriate. Thank you, Chris for your endless illumination and a special blessed gratitude to Mr. Finkelstein for lighting the tunnel I was in. I can see clearly now.

I’ve been listening to Norman Finkelstein for a long time. I remember when I saw his debate with Alan Dershowitz on “Democracy Now” and was impressed by his courage and passion. He made a fool out of Dershowitz and proved to the whole world that zionists lie about everything and they unfortunately have a massive support from both the media and the politicians which means that their talking points are being presented as truth. Norman has really sacrificed a lot for the Palestinian cause and he deserves the utmost respect. Greetings from Sweden.

So glad to see this. Like Norman I'm a student of abolitionist and other radical liberation movements in US history. Since the "40 babies" claim started I have talked about Nat Turner's rebellion and how they even killed children. And I've told people this was a tragedy that was the fault of the slave owning class. No one can imprison, starve, torture people and then critique their most extreme resistance out of context. I'm sad to say many "both sides are equally bad" people have told me no Nat Turner and Hamas must be condemned. They just won't see that puts them on the slaveholders side. It's so sad to see these monstrous stories of deluded supporters of injustice in the name of moderation. It's so heartening to see Norman saying something like what I've been saying. A minor note: The men John Brown beheaded were part of violent pro slave brigades so only "civilians" in a technical sense. It's worth thinking about that in other contexts too. Israel has a policy of moving the most militant zealous settlers near Gaza so while it's certain many innocent did die it's worth considering that just not being in the army doesn't always mean people don't take part in a war of oppressor and oppressed. It's often more complicated.

The Jews have certainly come full circle. Holocaust 1.0 was inflicted by others on the Jews. Holocaust 2.0 is now being inflicted by Jews on the 'others'. @davidmonaghan7926

I came here to say the very same thing about John Brown. He did not execute the women or the children. He executed men who were friends and employees of Dutch Henry, a pro slavery zealot who gave meals, lodging and funds to Border Ruffians and other pro slavery militias who had spent the previous years brutalizing and killing abolitionists. The "massacre" was in reaction to the sacking of Lawrence KS, the provisional abolitionist capital of KS, not recognized by DC (the pro slavery capital was however.....interesting) and the near fatal beating of abolitionist Senator Charles Sumner, by southern pro slavery dandy/tough guy, Preston Brooks, cuz his feelings were hurt. It can be argued that Potawatamie was a legitimate military action. One must consider the source when we believe that John Brown killed innocents. I do not believe that he did.

Respectfully, I must ask, have you had your head under a rock. Israel is under constant scrutiny in the U.S. for decades. If Israel sneezes the wrong way, the media is on it. As for schools, they are infected with a one-sided agenda. I grant you, this was not the case decades ago, but today you are absolutely wrong. Most churches have gone woke. The fundamentalists are pro-Israel but other than that, Christians are quite willing to criticize Israel...and as for the secular Jews which are in effect the majority of Jews in America, they examine the Palestinian issue in a way that no other group imo would. It's rare when a group is at war, under attack, and/or has land disputes with others, that they even reflect on what might be the underlying issues. The war in Ukraine could have been prevented and resulted from years of terrible U.S. leadership. Notice how in the first months of the war, almost no one dissented or took the time to look at both sides. This is typical. Secular Jews constantly examine their issues--you are in error about this. It's not a matter that Israel can never be wrong. As is the case with all democracies that have a myriad of issues, people tend to look at the big picture at the expense of nuance. Far more nuance when it comes to Israel and what you say, the opposite is true. Israel is the only western power that gets constant examination. My problem with this is that other countries should be examined with the same frequency.

This is first-class journalism and the reason I support this channel. Mr. Hedges, you are just as good interviewing as you are at being interviewed. It takes real courage to tackle a subject like this when everyone is still reacting at an emotional level. And I believe it is really no different when analyzing the Ukraine-Russia situation. We are all tempted to 'take a side' and react without fully understanding the reasons behind why history unfolds the way it does. International relations requires a kind of dispassionate and non-judgmental state of mind but media these days is content to simply shock and numb its audience doing a real disservice to everyone. This interview reveals all of that without even saying it. Congratulations to both of you and I am grateful for this forums' high caliber journalistic standards that actually enriches and helps listeners understand what's happening. Keep up the good work!!

Although I think it is possible to condemn an act and yet understand how it came to be, I'm glad Prof. Finkelstine explained how he could not condemn the terrorists. It's not that he is condoning their acts, but rather that he understands the deep context in which these things tend to happen. I have been able to see that an abused child or wife can lash out at a narcissist parent or husband while yet being horrified by their violent. reaction.

Depressed people could do a lot of things. And people in Gaza could probably have a much more severe mental health issues than just a depression. I was never oppressed, so I can't understand them. The only thing I could do is just to accept that this kind of condition exist, and it's not impossible. I wouldn't say what they did is right or wrong, but I wouldn't claim that I wouldn't become like that too, if I was put inside their shoes. Because, I was never in their shoes. Because, I will never understand what they really feel and experience no matter how hard I tried. Because, it never happened to me.
