Reminds me of my classmates that preach “I get bad grades because I’m not smart” but they don’t even actually read the homework, so they can’t understand. They ain’t stupid, they just lazy.
Or the other kinds. Who don’t actually do anything but people label them smart anyway and then get disappointed when they don’t actually do anything. Like me. For the life of me I can’t figure out why everyone kept telling me I was smart and gifted and treated me like I was some special genius. Now everyone calls me an idiot. So I guess they caught on lol

I love how this 20 seconds exposed all that was needed to know about Hogarth's backstory, at least what he does in school and aspects of his personality.
It really does i mever noticed i thought it was just to shpw hes bolder than he is and cant handle coffee but it actually exposed his life before the iron giant
This scene is a perfect summation of how this movie blends idealized animated characters with archetypes and character traits that feel real and grounded. Most child protagonists in movies are annoying but in this scene as a child you can relate to Hogarth and as an adult you find his spiel oddly charming. Also in most films Dean would be a twist villain or an unrealistically evil adult, but in this he’s just a relaxed everyman who serves as one of the few people Hogarth can trust.
@@dodgyyoutuber9560 I beg to differ. Kent _isn’t really_ evil per se, but rather his ego and paranoia just leads him to do stupid or harmful things. He isn’t exactly evil, but his villainy works and its kinda realistic to me and doesn’t come off as the typical "bad guy that intentionally does bad things."
Agree with Ultra, Mansley is what happens to anyone driven by ego/pride who also has a "cause" he can use to justify himself. His own crazy rant in the diner establishes his character just like this one fills in Hogarth's.
An adult man being friends with a boy like Hogarth used to be done all the time in old movies and TV shows and them turning out to be evil almost never happened i think. Nowadays it probably would be a common thing but in the past it was not.
Whoever at Cartoon Network was obsessed enough with this film to get it playing on the channel at all hours of the day every Thanksgiving did this world a phenomenal service.
That would be CEO Ted Turner. He saw the movie on a flight once and then demanded Cartoon Network marathon it, probably because he liked its anti-gun message.
I love how he figures out he's out of coffee partway through the rant, but his mouth is already working on overtime to get the thoughts in his head out, so when he finally gets to his point he just tacks the coffee question onto the end of the sentence because he's actually been thinking about the coffee for quite a while. Supreme characterization from the writers, actors, and animators just in this
Same tho. Especially when the people who won’t do the stupid homework get the same grades as you because no one actually cares if they do the stupid homework, meanwhile when you don’t do the homework you get all of the consequences.
Fun Fact: Director Brad Bird did all of Hogarth's animation in this scene. He has always been known for being hands on rather than a director who leads form afar. He is a well seasoned animator with plenty of years of experience and I'm glad he did this scene. The personality and expressions is heavily inspired by the voice actor and he really puts that in the spotlight. Brad Bird also did The Incredible and Ratatouille if you thought his name sounded familiar. This was his first time directing a feature length film and he blew it out of the water.
Ok, this actually makes me really happy, because when I get older, and hearing stuff like this makes me hopeful that I can manage what I want to do. I really want to direct a movie, but animate at the same time. I also would LOVE to become a voice actor
I honestly think the most underrated moment of this clip is the slow shrug and turn that Dean does. "okayyy, i know the consequences of this decision to give a child espresso but I'm ready for whatever occurs."
1:He probably never really had visitors and wants to be a good enough host 2: he likes Hogarth’s mom 3: before he saw the iron giant, he probably thought about how Hogarth had enough energy to travel alllll the way to the scrapyard and so Dean is like “mmm well at least he will get a lot of energy, enough to make it back home”

So she moved me up a grade because I wasn't fitting in, so now I'm even more not fitting in. I was getting good grades, y'know, like always, so my mom says "You need stimulation!", and I go "No, I'm stimulated enough right now." So she goes "Nuh-uh, you don't have a challenge, you need a challenge." So now I'm challenged alright, I'M CHALLENGED TO HOLD ON TO MY LUNCH MONEY! If kids were treated in less petty ways we'd have much less petty adults. This kind of thing sticks with ya. I know a lot of my best and worst behaviors were nurtured by good and bad experiences as a kid.
As someone who doesn't have kids, it's kind of easy since you don't have to be around them most of the time. Kids can be interesting and fun, but I don't have to give them attention 70+ hours a week, every week, like their parents do.
@@bofadesnuts7253 didn't it still bomb though due to poor marketing? And didn't DreamWorks kinda treat it like shit too? Sorta like how Disney treated treasure planet? All I know is Brad Bird was absolutely dismayed by how DreamWorks treated this clearly great movie Not exactly underrated, but DreamWorks didn't see how great this movie was
@@GravityK-b I don't see this as a kids film - it's just a film (and a masterpiece, at that). I recently re-watched it as an adult and I teared up a bit, even though I don't think I ever did as a kid. Some movies just don't care how old you are.
What an incredible scene. So much personality is conveyed so naturally, we get this excellent character exposition in an easily digestible, entertaining fashion (when what Hogarth is saying is sad; he's a lonely kid), and we get to see a relationship begin to develop between Dean and Hogarth.
@@brettgibbs8250 You'd be amazed what bad marketing (or a straight lack of) can do. Just look at Batman Mask of the Phantasm; horrible theatre release, VHS smash hit and considered by many one of the strongest Batman films (or least animated)
Yeah, I just turned 17 and I’ve only just realised how much I was in Hogarth’s shoes, especially in high school. When I wasn’t being picked on by other people because of my disability, I was made fun of my friends for not being an uncaring, lazy SOB 😂😂😂😂
More than a funny scene, is actually amazing how this actually conveys the entire personality of Hogarth and builts the parental relationship between him and Dean.
As someone who's currently in college for animation, this scene is as close to perfect as you can get. Well acted, well composed, well timed... and that last one is tricky with how fast Hogarth is going. This whole movie is perfect, honestly. Man, the late 90s really spoiled us for great animation, and so much of it was a commercial flop. Iron Giant, Atlantis, Road to El Dorado, Titan AE, Wacko's Wish, and Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars. Lots of beautiful stuff.
I actually like how kind of "bad" the audio quality is with the voice acting. Like, you can sort of still hear the microphone static as the actors deliver their lines. It kind of actually adds to the 50's aesthetic of the film.
Makes me imagine of a person sitting on a balcony in New York with a drink beside him on a table who reads a newspaper while listening to a radio broadcast on rock and roll.
@@NoriMori1992 It's much more noticeable in more high quality prints of the film (like the blu-rays or 4K versions), but you can hear a smidgen of it when hogarth goes "I said I'm hip."
If you haven't seen The Black Cauldron you should check it out. I can't watch it anymore because of how much it butchers the books it's based off, but on its own it's a good movie and has great animation.
This scene does a perfect job of analyzing something I've never really understood with bullying in movies. Why do the bullies target the smart kids? Hogarth says it himself, all the other kids see him as, "A shrimpy dork who thinks he's smarter than everyone." But Hogarth doesn’t think he’s smarter than everyone else. He just does the homework that gets assigned to them. Every time I see that happen in other movies and TV, I think, "What's so bad about being smart?" Intelligence is a great thing, not something you should feel bad about.
Because bullies are cowards and the "shrimpy dork" is an easy target. They also probably feel insecure about their own grades, so take it out on someone who they perceive as trying to lord over them simply by "doing the stupid homework."
Nah, nah, it's the animators for capturing that vmhyoed up vibe and managing to do that lip syncing! They probably went through hell in this scene but it's worth it !
To this day I still ADORE this scene. The animation, the dialogue.. Hogarth is so relatable! I remember first watching this and immediately wanting to rewind lolol
Can we appreciate that it wasn’t weird back in the day for the depiction of a kid and an adult having a genuine interaction without there being anything else that people would be suspicious about? I miss my childhood…
Especially one where the adult is just listening to the kid, taking in what they’re saying and not trying to brush off the kid’s feelings and give them sage bullshit on how, “everything gets better kiddo, chin up,” he’s just listening to the kid. Way too often we as a humanity ignore children and teenagers’ emotions just because they’re younger and we invalidate them so now whenever an adult does have a mature conversation with a kid, lets them talk and is sympathetic, people feel weird about it. He’s not treating him like an adult but he isn’t acting like he doesn’t know anything. He’s just *listening.*
It's funny to me because I know folks who work in animation, and there's this like... psycho-reality they occupy at times of extreme overworked madness that is pretty much like Hogarth's little rant here, where their irises shrink to pinholes and the room becomes noticeably hotter when they come into it.
I love how Dean and Hogarth's mom get together at the end. Dean is the perfect definition of a Cool Dad. "Hey, you think he's hyper *now?* You should'a seen em' when I gave him Espresso a few weeks ago!" *"YOU GAVE HIM ESPRESSO!?"*
Dean : * immediate look at Hogarth* He said he was hip and he was able to drink it...now i can see that's a lie. Hogarth: hehe Hogarth's Mom: OH REALLY!!??
***** Trust me. As much as high school sucks shit, it's really all about teaching you how to build a work ethic. You aren't going to remember half of your biology, history, math, or what have you, unless a specific subject actually pertains to your interest. Can you do all this busy work? Good. You'll be able to work under pressure in the adult world. College, in my experience, is about figuring out where you want to go with your life, and the first two years are more or less open for you to screw around with while you figure out where you want to put your career. Again, just do the stupid homework so you can move up a grade and get pounded. I fucked about in high school, and I don't particularly regret it, but you'll have much more opportunity (read better college choices) if you keep the grades up.Admittedly, again, it's not about 'ALL A'S, BLAUGH', so much as doing YOUR personal best. If you average out Cs across the board in a math class, you can still get out with a B in the end, maybe even a low A. Again, it's all about DOING the work to YOUR best ability. Keep it up, you can get through this :)
+Mia Mcdavid wow ty for your speach, I'v ben thinking about that alot, I mainly wanted to be an Animator or a Story Board artist but I found Programing also pays well, I enjoy programming but I would be happier taking Animatopn, well I don't really know what is gonna really happen though, ill be on 3rd grade of highschool in about a month so still a long way to go.
TheMrDanieloco Yeah, go for it. Maybe double major, or take a minor. You only live once. Remember, first two years give you some wiggle room, so knock out the general ed requirements first and test the waters a bit.
I'm still sad about how underrated this movie is. It's literally my favorite movie of all time. You can tell Brad Bird and his crew made this their passion project. Especially when you watch their signature edition where they touched up the effects and hand re-drew every scene to make it as crisp as possible. Such a beautiful movie
“I don’t think I’m smarter than them, I just do the stupid homework! If everyone else *just did the stupid homework,* they could move up a grade and get pounded too!” Why was the motion and body language in the animation every bit as relatable as the dialogue tho
He's so right about the homeworks. I got in my section's top students even though I just complete all the activities, homeworks and just simply read notes before a test
@@atlas2282 its also about completing a task assigned to you systematically, you know. the likelihood of most people using those 500 hours effectively is pretty slim. at least you have the satisfaction of having managed your time well. plus you don't have to answer anybody about not having completed your work.
You know in storytelling they often say "show don't tell." However, telling can work sometimes. In this case, since the story is focused mainly on Hogarth's relationship with the Iron Giant, the movie doesn't exactly need to show that Hogarth has kind of a difficult time in school.
He has the most personality I've ever seen in an animated kid. Most movies is just "I'm a relatable kid because I'm awkward and play games" But this little dude actually has a personality that isn't just the one dimensional "underdog". I love it Edit: Ok I wasn't gonna do a cringey edit for thousands of likes, but 14k is the most I've ever had. Wanted to clarify that I'm not saying there are no modern exceptions 😑 Bruh, I'm just saying the way kids were written back then was more like a real kid. A modern example of this is the girl from Mitchell's vs the machines. She was like a real teen. :)
Everyone in movies back then had personality. The world may be backwards now but it can still change back to the cool world if enough people keep it real
Fun fact: Coffeezilla the youtuber literally got his name from this particular scene. Him and his brother found it so amusing they used to quote it all the time and eventually he just adopted it as his youtuber username.
This is what I love about Brad Bird's movies. He puts themes in them that both kids and adults will enjoy. Most kids probably would get lost in Hogarth's ramblings, but kids who listen close would realize that Hogarth is an extremely relatable character to their age group. Adults on the other hand would very obviously notice the messages and fear of war, guns, and nuclear annihilation of the late 50s.
I love it when writers mix humor with some character reveal! Not only do we get a good laugh from those who don't get it, we also understand why he doesn't have other friends. Not to mention what he expresses is a social issue that still might be around. Getting bullied for doing good grades is an issue that we need to resolve. It discourages kids from doing good in school, which can affect them in bad ways, IE, it teaches them that doing good in school gets you hurt for no reason, and that the parents can't do anything about it.
yes. Bullied and alienated. Good you picked up on this. But the kids who strive to get good grades, I hope they know they could be the others' bosses one day.
I like that the situation is a bit cleverer than the fact that he's smarter than everyone else. He was moved up a grade, which means that he's a year younger than his classmates, which makes a big difference when you're a squirt. So not only is he smarter than them, he's the smallest kid in class and a bulls eye for bullies. Its tough teaching gifted kids because you have to balance their academic situation with their social one. You can have them bored to death by the schoolwork or have them beat up by being forced into social situations they are not big enough to handle yet.
He brought in the “all of the Buffalo” culture in Pixar. He wanted to make sure that every scene had the most full animation- and you can see that here.

As an AP student, that's exactly true. Literally all I did was study and turn in all my work, and people called me gifted and said I should be challenged more. Just do your work, y'all.
For AP tests you often need a lot of skills too. They would have done better if they did the work but don’t undervalue yourself. If you passed the AP test you’re pretty good at a lot of things (writing well under pressure, good mathematical sense, comprehension of scientific or historical tests, etc. depending on the test)
@@Tigershark_3082 I probably should have added the part where failing AP tests doesn’t make you invaluable! If you don’t have the skills to pass the AP test even with lots of work that’s okay too.
